-Magic Survey-

Credit Earned: 1-2

Quest Description
To get to know the thoughts of the students currently enrolled in the school, Gideon would a notebook full of their thoughts on magic; where it comes from, why humans don't seem to be as adept at it, why the like or dislike magic, and their thoughts on the other races. Therefore, he seeks quick interviews with the students, whether they be one-on-one, or in groups. Will you contribute to his project?

A tall, burly redheaded male was brooding in his chair, deep in thought. Large hands were clasped together on top of his desk, and he frowned at them slightly, mind and gaze far away. Gideon Matthias Burdock was here because he couldn't be babysitting and worrying over the injured and mysterious Scyeth and Micajah. He had other duties to attend to, as well, and both boys really just needed to heal at the moment.

Instead, he was supposed to be reading the manila folder on his already some-what cluttered desk. It contained the file of the student Seibehn Nash. Still, he figured it wasn't a loss to not read it. He could meet the boy first. Instead, he picked up a ballpoint pen, going back to inking his latest sketch. It was a new addition to his father's corporation's building in Japan.

All around his office were blueprints and sketches of buildings and rooms, as well as black and white photos of buildings and various pictures of Gideon with important looking people. He sat at a solid oak desk, a cot tucked away behind it, now buried beneath books and papers. Across from the desk was both a couch, snuggled against the wall, and also semi-cluttered, and two oak chairs, turned to face him.

One would think that with all the new students floating around, that they'd be of major focus with the new professors but apparently this was not the case. Nash had just finished a class when he went to the administration office to receive a note telling him to go see Gideon Matthias Burdock for an interview he was conducting. Well that was quite a surprise but rather than put up a fight he was curious about this person and more so about this interview.

What could this person possibly gain to find by interviewing him? With a shrug he made his way to Gideon's office standing firmly in front of the door. Checking over his hand-me-downs he felt confident enough in his presentation that he gave a soft knock at the door to announce his presence.

"Ah, Mr. Nash, come on in! They sent me your file, but I haven't gotten the chance to read it yet." Gideon's smile was warm enough as he welcomed the boy into his office, watching him open the door and pausing his sketch briefly to gesture toward a seat. "So, why don't you tell me about yourself? Also, while you're talking, how about you tell me what got you interested in my survey?"

The large man's hands were startlingly graceful as they inked the important lines on the paper before him.

He sure didn't waste time when it came to such things, Nash noted. Entering the office he quickly surveyed the area before taking his seat in front of the man's desk. With the usual nervous twitch here and fiddle there he managed to settle after while looking anywhere that wasn't in front of him.

"Um... well you know my name. I suppose you know my age, I'll be fifteen this coming year." He smiled at that, glad for the growth. Scratching his nose he thought a moment shrugging as was part of his mannerisms. "Not much to tell sir, I come from a middle class background. Country life was fun but hard work. As for the survey I guess I was curious." He thought then spoke again. "Wanted to know what kind of person conducts interviews but it's not so bad... I guess."

Gideon asked because, after all, the survey was entirely voluntary, and Nash would have had to have found out about it somehow and sought Gideon's office out. The tall redhead nodded and 'mhmm'd, carefully measuring a line on his paper with a ruler before inking it in.

"Well, I'm Professor Burdock, if you didn't know. I'm 'conducting' interviews simply to satisfy my own curiosities about today's youth, boy. The heroes of the future and all."

Reaching around in one of his desk drawers, he got out a blue ballpoint pen, and began lining arches. "So, let's get started, mmn? I assume you read the flyer. First, what school are you going into and why?"

Nash nodded looking at the big man's work in front of him. Wondering curiously to herself what he was up to he shrugged then answered the professor's questions. "I'm going into Magic school and the reason is because I'm trying to catch a ghost." He looked off again, a nervous habit it appeared before locking his violet orbs with the man before him. "The ghost may still be alive today or he could have died a long time ago. I don't know but all my efforts are going to understand his obsession with magic and somewhere along the line I hope to reunite with him." This he said with mild interest or emotion. There wasn't much else he needed to say after that as he went silent.

"A ghost, mmn? If you are speaking of the spirits, and not just the past, then it is interesting that you say they might be dead or alive. Since, by their very nature, a ghost no longer lives in body." Gideon chuckled, pausing briefly in his drawing to eye Nash. "Also interesting that your reasons for going into magic have nothing to do with saving the world. So far, none of you students have brought that up."

Nash shrugged once again eyes falling on the man's work and not him. "The world doesn't need saving. The people do and that's nothing I care to fix." He stated simply enough. His gaze shifted away from the professor to anywhere that was comfortable. "I was perhaps brought here to save the world but that wasn't why I came." Truth be told he needed to escape. "I am curious to know, who has the authority to bring us here? Where is this information coming from and how can they be certain any of us can make any kind of difference; let alone save the world?"

Gideon calmly went back to etching in arches and walkways, shaking his head with a chuckle. "I believe, Mr. Nash, that you have forgotten whom is conducting the interview here." He winked at the boy briefly before looking down at his paper. "Those sound like questions for the headmaster, not I." A short pause and he continued his line of thought. "What is it, to you, Mr. Nash? Magic, that is. Where does it come from? Who can use it? Why does it exist?"

He looked up again, black eyes amused. "Feel free to take your time. One answer, and I'll respond to it, then we can go from there."

Nash blushed with slight embarrassment not meaning to sound rude but he had his reasons for questioning things. "Pardon." He squeaked looking down at his lap where he folded his fingers together. "What is magic to me?"

He continued fiddling with his fingers, moving toward plucking at imaginary lint on his coveralls. "Magic is freedom." He spoke calmly a solemn expression on his face. "You get tired of hearing how worthless you are, how much better life would be without you that, it sorta sticks in the far corners of your mind. And ever so often it becomes a constant reminder of just how useless you are." With a shrug he looked up. "I'm tired of feeling like that. Magic is my freedom, its my gateway to a new life and possible purpose. Right now I don't know what I want, or why I even choose magic aside from catching that stupid ghost. Maybe I'm just ignorant of things but I can't help who I am."

Interesting. Gideon smiled slightly, nodding his head and continuing to sketch. It helped him think. He had yet to meet a boy here without a dark past. Perhaps that was the true source of their genius? "I see. Magic, as well as Science, are gateways for the youth to independance." Tapping his pen briefly on his chin, he raised an eyebrow.

"Where does magic come from, Mr. Nash? Your thoughts, of course."

Nash thought a moment then gave a soft smile. "Honestly I don't know but I want to say it can be harnessed from nature." He gave a soft shrug watching the professor carefully. "At least it would appear that's how magic is managed. Most books that have a background dealing in magic allude to nature and how it effects the use of magic for the user."

"Harnessed from nature, yes, yes that is true... But more specifically. Where? What?" Gideon was pressing, trying to get Nash to think a little more about it answers. He wanted details, opinions... "For instance, food comes from nature, but where does it really come from?"

Nash seemed to be frustrated by this point. He wasn't sure what he was suppose to say. Was this really a survey or some kind of pop quiz? "I.. don't know. I was just answering what came to mind." He let out finally looking away. "I mean sure food comes from nature but its the plants, the animals, game and such that we get it from to process and make it fit for human consumption. I guess..." He breathed sitting quietly for the time being.

"Very good, Mr. Nash. Now, can you relate that to magic? Continue your thoughts, persay." Gideon, while he went through this with each student, had a varying level of interest involved in their answers. Nash's were interesting because they... Lacked a certain something.

Fire. Nash didn't seem to have the passion he'd seen in some other students. "Why are you here?" A question of curiosity. "To be free?" People were supposed to fight for freedom.
