 In the dusky twilight, a bluish paw reached up to paw at the setting sun on the horizon. Soon the sun would be gone and the stars would come out to play. But for now, everything was covered with a warm, golden haze, even the dark and sparkling Helix that lay on her back under a tree.
She grinned, tongue lolling out awkwardly in her upside-down position. For her, it looked like the sun was moving up to disappear behind the ground-sky.
Maybe it really was! Maybe she and the rest of her kind were the crazy ones, running around on an upside down world! If so...then now, she was looking at the world as it should be, with it's solid sky and endless floor of puffy clouds and stars.
Clouds would probably be much nicer to walk on.
She sighed, lost in her thoughts that twisted and turned, leading in ever-interesting directions.

 Kishan sat facing the sun. His tail curled around his paws while he sat in quiet meditation. The golden hour. What better time to achieve enlightenment? The world was settling in for the calm of the night, and the earth was most alive with color now. Deep breath in. Out slowly.Kishan would one day achieve inner peace. Deep breath in. Ou-His calm was broken into by a noise. What was that? The moving of grass, a rustle of leaves? His ear twitched as he tried to block out the noise, but it was too late. He'd focused on it, his calm lost. With a sigh, Kishan would have to stop his meditation for he day. A pity. The forest here seems like the perfect place. Calm, green- nothing like home. Slowly, his legs unfurled from under him as he stood. A few pine needles stuck to his blue-grey fur before he started walking, shaking the needles out. He had to find that sound now.

The rustling sound of pine needles caused Nova's ear to twitch...or would have if she hadn't been lying upside-down and all. Instead, her tail started to swish, paws still in the air as she seemed to have no inclination to roll over just yet. She liked seeing the world how it was supposed to be.
The sun was still setting, but the stars weren't out yet. Maybe one was coming to visit her! Invite her to dance with them in the night sky. She grinned at the thought, pondering what that might be like. It was dark up there, but if they glowed enough, she could probably still see. As long as the moon was out too.
Silver eyes searched the area from an upside down vantage point, seeking out her twilight visitor.
'Be it a star that comes to visit me this evening? Or some other celestial body? I know not if my dancing would match your skill, but I'd like to try.'

A pair of azure blue eyes slowly appeared, reflecting a little of the light from the near set sun. Kishan glanced around, and spotted female in a rather odd position. He smiled gently as he noted her dusky pelt.
"Good evening." He said softly, in a voice like velvet. "Are you enjoying this roll in the leaves?" He wasn't sure if that was what she was doing, but that was ok. Kishan's movements were graceful and anything but threatening as he came closer to the upsidedown girl. Her happy face brought a faint smile to his own.

Nova smiled back, not the type of Helix to get worried or upset about attack from a stranger. That might get her in trouble one day, but as it was, she'd made it this far with no tragedy. To Nova, this was just a new Helix to talk to and a possible friend.
'No celestial being, I suppose, but no disappointment,' she commented, still grinning. Her tail flicked happily, rustling the fallen leaves beneath her. 'I guess so. What other use might they have? They must be here for some reason, if not for our enjoyment.' She flopped over onto her side, finally raising her head from the ground. 'Though, I was mostly enjoying the view of the sunset.'
She didn't seem to notice the leaves stuck in her fur until one came loose and floated down to land on her nose, leaving the Helix blinking and slightly cross-eyed for a moment.

Kishan chuckled a little. "Leaves nourish the insects and some animals. They provide shelter and bedding for creatures of all sizes. Perhaps they are more then just enjoyable. They're necessary." Seeing her go cross eyed, he reached out a paw and gently moved the leaf from her nose. "I am sorry that I'm no heavenly being, I am simply myself. Pray tell, is the view of the sunset better from your vantage point then mine?"
She seemed a free spirit, a refreshing helix to meet. Care free? Kishan slowly lowered himself to the leaves near where the female lay and rolled to his back. "It does give one a new perspective on things. Do you ever feel that you could just fall into the sky? Endlessly float among the countless stars and galaxies?" He stretched a paw up. "The stars are so different here."

Nova frowned in thought. 'I had meant when the trees and animals were finished with them, but yes, I forgot their use as bedding. Though you could still roll in them then.' She smiled again at his 'help.' 'Thank you. It seems that leaf wished to make me dizzy so that I'd lie down again.'
And yet, it seems that the leaf would get its wish afterall. Smiling, Nova quickly resumed her earlier position, this time next to the new male. 'Just a while ago, I wondered...maybe we're all upside-down normally. Maybe this is how the world is supposed to be. The hard-ground sky should go above us, to keep us from soaring too high and hurting ourselves. And the clouds and stars to dance about our paws forever.'
She paused for a moment, glancing over at the male with a grin. 'Would you like to dance among the stars? Take a nap whilst wrapped in a cloud?'

"A bed of clouds would be most pleasant. But do you think perhaps stars are pointy like thistles? The most beautiful of things can be dangerous. A rose, you see, beautiful and fragrant, has sharp thorns that will snag the unaware paw." He fell silent for a moment, gazing up- or rather down- at the stars.
"My dear lady, I would be honored to have even but one dance along the path of stars with you." He turned his head to smile at her. "In due time, we shall all reach the stars. We ill be one with them. One of them. But until then, let us admire- and dance."

The fact was true, if sad. Beautiful things could be dangerous. Nova frowned, pawing at the air again. 'Perhaps, but I prefer to think that they might be light and swift, beautiful and not harmful...like fireflies.' She liked them better that way. Playful and inviting her to join their dance in the dark sky.
She turned as well, looking at the male curiously. 'We shall? I've always dreamed, but...' She fell quiet. 'Much as I've hoped, it's never happened. I hope you do not tease me, sir.' She turned a sad frown towards her fellow muse, faint hope still shining in her eyes. 'And yet,' she continued, 'if you speak true, I'd love to dance with you when that day comes.'

"I firmly believe that when we are no longer a part of this world, that we will join the stars in theirs. While I wish to see the stars that close, I am in no hurry. There are still many bright and beautiful things to gaze upon on in this world." He looked away from her when he spoke the last, hoping to not give her a wrong impression- even if her star-like appearance was quite striking.
The sun was nearly set. The sky was ablaze in purples and pinks. Twilight, just before the stars would start to rise. Kishan lifted a paw up towards the sky. "Do you ever greet the night with open paws?"

Nova pondered this for a bit, deciding that she liked the sound of it. She supposed she could wait then, as long as she knew it was coming eventually. Her tail flicked a bit as she turned her gaze back up towards the sky.
Again, a smile crossed her muzzle. 'Why do you think I was lying here before?' She chuckled softly, unsure whether he'd meant the question literally or figuratively, but for her...what was the difference?
Continuing to speak, her eyes were locked on the first of the twinkling specks up above. 'Even though it's dark, I've always loved the night. Dark or not, there's something beautiful about it. Something about knowing you're awake and everyone else is sleeping. There's...a different sort of energy at night. Maybe the stars are up there watching us. You think? Maybe, we're like...entertainment to them. They come every night to watch the show down here. The moon only comes from time to time. Maybe its got other things to do elsewhere...'
With someone else to talk to for once, Nova's musings took a verbal form, creating unseen links from one thought to another.

Kishan listened with interest as she thought out loud. "It's possible. Maybe they are like guardians to us. A star for every life." It made some sense, right? There were countless lives on this planet, and countless stars in the sky. "I hope that when we go to meet the stars that they will welcome us as warmly as we welcome then." It was nice talking to someone who seemed as deep a thinker as he. Or at least, she seemed a deep thinker.
"There's a calm at night that I find soothing. It's peaceful. Where I'm from, the nights are a welcome relief from the oppressive heat of the day, so I've always liked the night better." After a moment, his mind wandered. It made sense!
"The stars watch over us, to make sure we are not harmed during the night."

Nova listened in turn, her tail wagging and swishing some of the dry leaves about. 'It's hot where I come from too, but there's so much wetness in the air, it's hot even at night sometimes. It's like being hot, but taking a bath at the same time,' she giggled softly, her thoughts turning back to their earlier conversation.
'A star for every life, she echoed thoughtfully. Grinning, she shifted in the leaves a bit, moving her head closer to the male's and shooting him a glance. 'I like that. That's nice of them to watch over us too. But I have to know, if that's true...where's your star? And where's mine? Maybe they even have their own names!' Before long, her tail might just sweep away all the leaves in the area at this rate.

Kishan thought about her question for a moment. "Back home, there's a star that never moves in the sky. It's a brilliant blue little thing. Hidden away near the white and yellow larger stars. I think... I think that star is mine." He looked at her and smiled. Was she closer now? Slowly, Kishan rolled over and stood slowly. "Why shall we wait to join the stars to dance? How about we dance for them now?"

"That sounds lovely," Nova responded before glancing back up at the sky. If that was so...then where was her star?
Good question.
And apparently one that would have to wait a while longer for an answer. She had another question to address that seemed to demand more attention. "Now? Us?" The whirl of leaves that swept away from her more-than-enthusiastic tail should have been answer enough.
Nonetheless, the sparkly female rolled and bounced to her paws, grinning widely. "I think that's a wonderful idea. I'd be delighted to join you for a dance, dear sir." Giggling softly, Nova knelt her front paws in a brief bow before she was up again. Dancing to music and a rhythm that apparently only she could hear, she altered her steps from slow to quick as she whirled, her long tail trailing after her in graceful arcs.
For one who had seemed flighty and perhaps a bit clumsy before...Nova retained none of that now.
