I'm assuming there are at least some other high school seniors here and I know there are many college students/graduates who can hopefully offer some opinions/advice.
So, I'm in the process of applying to colleges; already applied to 3, applying to at least 3 more but possibly more. And... I really have no idea where to apply, let alone how to make the decision of where to go, assuming finances isn't even a factor.
For those currently going through the process or already out of it, any advice? Also looking for college suggestions that have a good engineering program and/or are liberal arts.

I applied to 10... only 5 I had a reasonable chance of getting into, 3 were ones I wanted to go to... I was only accepted to one.
So I started in one... got an associates, transferred... switched majors... got a bachelors, entered the job market... did a lot of work inside and outside the field... went back for a 3rd which I'm now trying to market.

So far I'm accepted in 2, but I have a reasonable chance of getting into all of the rest but one. Have a feeling I'll change my major many times, though... xp

EDITED for clarification: Truman and Mizzou- Nothing hard to get into or anything, but they're giving me lots of scholarships. Also applying: Yale, Northwestern, WashU, Vanderbilt, and maybe Rice and/or others. Danski: Woah; that's early! Did you do early decision/action anywhere? Shas: Nice! Behatz: That's so awesome!! I was going to apply there as an International student, but it would be really expensive to go there... How does it work in the UK?

LordNeuf So... you'll be in Missouri for a while then? And how exactly are they paying you to go to Mizzou? Possibly- not really sure where I'm going yet, as I really don't want to go to Mizzou, and Truman unfortunately has no engineering program. I really like Northwestern, but that's assuming that one, I'd even make it in, and secondly, that there's nowhere else I'd like better. Scholarships(Both college ones and Bright Flight) and In-State Tuition! biggrin My bad- I should clarify, though- I don't get a stipend.

Helpful hint, don't go to a college that doesn't have your career program. It's a waste of time and money. Truman does have a major Chem lab feature which will get your grades up and make it possible for you to transfer to a place like... Wentworth Tech... (which I HIGHLY recommend for anyone who wants to be an architect or a civil engineer, I should know, I went there.) However, you will have to slog through chemistry school to explore some avenue and how it relates to engineering, before transferring to an engineering school. So, being someone who burned out at Wentworth and had to transfer with a useless degree because it was the only thing I could handle. Let me tell you how intense their engineering program is. AND... you don't need a car while at Wentworth, it's on the subway line. Green Line E, takes you to Copley Center, symphony hall, and is a nice way to get around the city to explore. Also, Huntington Ave has like 20 colleges on it. (maybe an overestimation) but it's a small school in a big city. Plus... the 66 bus runs off Huntington Ave, which takes you DIRECTLY to Coolidge Corner, and Harvard Square. Coolidge Corner is the Jewish neighborhood of Brookline, Harvard Square (which has been gentrified) is a great place to go to buy stuff. So DP, being a Bostonian... I recommend Wentworth, it's right next door to North Eastern and across the street from The Museum of Fine Arts. http://www.wit.edu/index.phpAlso to clarify... I have an Associates from Wentworth in Electrical Engineering, focus on Solid State I transferred to here... http://www.ipfw.edu/ to get a BA in History and then I went here... http://www.colby-sawyer.edu/ for my Associates in Communications with a focus on Writing for Publication. I can rant about any one of those colleges if you need.

It's... it's definitely expensive. But I expect the government will make them lower it soon. My family have a history of going there, and getting scholarships. I'm actually in a private school on an academic scholarship at the moment. So hopefully I'll get one of Oxford's! Or at least a partial one. If there's a distaster, and I can't get in, I'll either be heading for Edinburgh University, or head over to you guys and work out which is the best in the USA. Cambridge is a big no-no. My family would disown me 3nodding

Quote: Cambridge is a big no-no. My family would disown me 3nodding For those of us who don't know English Collegiate Lore... the Oxford/Cambridge rivalry, otherwise known as The Oxbridge Affair has more to do with the fact that in 1209, a group on professors and philosophers broke off from Oxford and went north to found Cambridge University. They've been competing ever since. They use the same teaching methods, they're both founded the Plantagenet era, they have very similar curriculum. It's just that they disagree on everything else. For example, one university calls their outdoor areas "Quads" the other "Courts" The trimesters at one place are called "Michaelmas, Hilary and Trinity" while at the other it's "Michaelmas, Lent and Easter." Even the cleaning crews have different names. "Scouts" and "Bedders" And then of course there's the Oxford English Dictionary, and the Cambridge Dictionary of English. This competition between two universities has lead to some of the greatest discoveries and innovations known to mankind. Both want to be the best and both demand the best. So Behatz, your dad's an Oxford man? is he?

xd I never knew that; that's awesome!
Neuf- That's the thing- right now I want to double major in Environmental or Biomedical Engineering and Physics with a minor in European or Art History (maybe both). I have a feeling this is going to change quite heavily once in college, so I don't want to rule out a place based on what I want to do now. sad
How on earth have you heard of Truman, though? I'm impressed!

Also, a double major AND a minor? I tried double majors at Wentworth, burned out quickly. Quote: How on earth have you heard of Truman, though? I'm impressed!
