I'm gonna make this short...because I'm lazy.

This album is...completely chaotic. I honestly don't know what to think.
It's as if they were thinking of Kisou and Marrow of A Bone...and then took a s**t load of psychodelics...and went to a different dimension to record everything.

It's bizzare.
Unfortunately, unlike most Dir en grey albums, one can't listen to the whole album all the way through without becoming a little bored. You'll notice that they have a certain definite style now. In my opinion, they're style has always been not easy to define, but with this album strong elements of MOAB are prominant...the slightly metal guitars, fast drums that are the same in a couple of songs...

I dunno. Once again, I don't know what to think of this album. It's ******** out there.
If you thought they were "going back to their roots" from hearing GLASS SKIN you'll be sorely disappointed. But then again, it should be expected. Dir en grey = radical styles.

My favorite songs so far:

VINUSHKA : This song...I have no idea. It's so ******** weird. It's all over the place. You'll think they have a pattern going and then all of a sudden tons of s**t is flying at your ear drums.
[edit] : After listening to this song more I have a better grasp on its pattern. It's just awesome. Their sound is just...so different. I mean, that's what they've always been about...but now it's just so...mind boggling! Can't wait to see them live.

RED SOIL: I think this song could very well represent the entire album. It's as if they've gone back over their old songs and rewrote them in the style of MOAB. This song is very MACABRE. Reminds me a lot of Malice Mizer. I thought I'd never say that about a Dir en grey song!

蜷局 : This song is simply amazing. I can't understand it. It's just so ******** out there. Very reminiscent of The Deftone's style...but somehow evolving past the whole dark yet slow ambiance of s**t bands like Tool or A Perfect Circle.
The guitars are amazing, just radically different...similar in sound to RED...[em] but still a thing in itself. God I ******** love this band.

The songs after haven't stuck out to me...I'll have to listen to the album a couple more times to get a better sense of them.

INCONVENIENT IDEAL : I liked it...but it's not much different from GLASS SKIN.

That's my two cents!

I really dislike the idea of him trying to sing in english frankly, I'd prefer it to be japanese. >.<

I don't think I'd really mind...if he improved his english...
I tend to like the all japanese with a couple of english lines format, though.

I completely agree, on the first part.
As much as Kyo's vocabulary and skills with the language itself may have improved over the years, I think he should work on pronunciation more before he tries singing an entire song in English. I had a lot of difficulty with Glass Skin, able to understand only a few particular things here and there.

I agree about the english thing. I wish he would have kept the japanese version on the album...I mean, the sticker on the back says it's a similar version [the whole album] to the one released in Japan. So I'm assuming that means that several songs were re-recorded in english for the north american CD which makes me a bit sad because I like the Japanese...

But then again, his english is getting a bit better. You can clearly make out when he screams 'SUCK ME' so much so that my dad understood it on the drive home from teh bus terminal >.>

i don't think he should sing in english, really. he doesn't sound right when he does. i dont think he understands that songs in english and songs in japanese tend to have different patterns. he'll be speaking english, but saying it like it's japanese
i think this is better than marrow, though. a bit more melodic
girugamesh's new album has completely overshadowed this for me, i must say

as in... the self-titled '07 album? or is there a newer one? ninja

Also, I agree 100% with "he'll be speaking english, but saying it like it's japanese." Couldn't have worded that better.

When I first heard Glass Skin, I didn't really perceive it as a return to diru's roots. In my opinion it's the most "mainstream" song on the album. Pretty, yes. But I don't think it does anything to progress their sound.

I don't want diru to sound like they used to. I want them to keep trying new things. And I think by doing that they're honoring the diru tradition.
The band is obviously moving in new directions, but I think Uroboros encompasses the attitude of their past works. It's true that they sound more American than they used to, but you can hardly lump them in with all the popular American metal bands. For one, their music has an instrumentality to it (that might have been lacking in MOAB) that forces the listener to focus on more than the vocals.

In this album you hear more funky rhythms and strange textures of sound that remind me of Macabre and Vulgar. The music doesn't sound the same, but they're using similar musical elements and emotions that make diru diru.

Though I loved listening to MOAB, I must say that Uroboros is a huge leap up. There is some repetition. Like, I'll get a bit of the melody from Ware, Yam Tote stuck in my head, but then I'll think, "Wait, isn't there another song on the album that kind of sounds like that..?" And yeah, sometimes it's hard for me to listen to the whole album in one sitting, but we all have short attention spans. And to be honest, I can hardly ever sit through Macabre all the way anyway.

My favorite songs:
Vinushka - I think it's a perfect example of their blend of old and new. Kickass.
Dozing Green - Took me a while to really find this one addicting. But I love it, especially when Kyo screams. wink
Toguro - I think this song is really engaging. I don't find the melody to be the most appealing part of it, but the texture I guess.

So... that's my impression of Uroboros. I actually wrote a big review on facebook a few months ago. But as for Kyo's english... I'm not really a fan; it doesn't sound as pretty to me. But since I can't understand Japanese either, it doesn't make too much of a difference to me. sweatdrop
Anyway, I've talked too much, and I have a test at 8 AM tomorrow.
