Songjewel's Field Notes and Philodendron

Nickname: Phili
Likes: Afternoon showers, warm breezes, the sound of tupperware being opened
Dislikes: Morning baths, smoke, cold, domestic cats
Personality: Philodendron has a very sharp wit and tends to be a bit sarcastic. Always to the point, she makes biting comments and astute observations very quickly. This can lead to misunderstandings occasionally; just because she taunts you doesn't mean she doesn't like you. She does tend to think everyone ought to know something if she knows it, though.

Philodendron talks in green!

Today the most wondrous thing happened! First time on the job, and I must admit I was feeling nervous, but I swear it wasn't just me. She spoke to me, she really did!

I was in the North Arbor Greenhouse, looking for someone to show me the ropes, when a tiny little...thing called out to me! I don't know what else to call it...I suppose she was a sprite of sorts. The spirit of a plant, embodied in a human-like form. And she spoke to me!

I was so excited with this discovery that I almost burst into the staff room to let someone know, but I thought better of it. They would surely think I was crazy, it being my first day. Or, they would already know about this and find me rediculously funny. So, I resolved to keep it to myself.

I must find out if this is a result of our genetics program, or if every plant in the arboretum has a similar sprite. If so...oh, the possibilities! And Phili...that's what I've started calling her...Phili seems to have taken a liking to me. We talked a good bit, and we have so much to share with one another. She seems born with an innate understanding of plants; whenever I ask about something she deems obvious, she gets so incredulous. It's very cute, although she makes me feel silly at times. There is much about the outside world she wishes to know as well.

Oh, here comes Lulu! I should look like I'm working.

Lulu found out about the sprites today. A purple-haired Columbine found her. I'm happy I have someone to talk to now. And...I suppose a little jealous as well. But I couldn't keep it a secret forever. Lulu seems really enthusiatic about my plan...I think she's going to help me publicize it!

Of course, it'll have to be done very smoothly...we don't want to tell people too much before they are actually chosen. Ooooh, I'm so excited! A breeding and adoption program, and my supervisors have already approved it! Of course, I didn't tell them about the sprites, just the adopt-a-plant idea. Imagine, people can come in and apply to adopt a plant in the arboretum. Then, they get to take care fo that plant while it stays here. What a great way to get the public involved in the arboretum!...Not to mention, it'll be a great chance to see how human interaction impacts the plant's sprite.

Monday

We had a little mishap with Kitten...she'll be okay, of course. But we ended up with a new parent for Pink! Taneko came on board with the other parents, and she's doing a great job so far. Course, she calls Pink "Ari," so I'll have to get used to that. But I think I can manage. ^_~

Anyway right now I've got a more pressing problem. Apparently, that last shipment of African plants we got in carried a stowaway. Now I've got hairy yellow spiders running around the outside of the South Arbor Greenhouse. Luckily, I think the new parents are going to help me out with that. We'll see how this goes...We're going to try to round them up.

Wednesday

Things are growing so fast! So many new parents already. I'm glad the program has been a success. Phili says she misses seeing me; I've been busy lately. I regret not having time to spend with her, but I hope that this cook-out we're planning will help with that!

Oh! Krys has decided to come on full-time! So now I will have some help around the Arboretum. Yay!
