Sunset had come and gone, leaving a clear night behind it. As the sun had set, Kairi had left the 'cave' of old gnarled roots she and Silas had slept in during the day. As the last light had died, she had returned, three hares in her jaws. It wasn't the best of hunting...but she was more worried about her charge's tummy than her own. And his safety. Kairi was a little nervous leaving him on his own, even hidden, and made it a habit to not stray too far for too long.
Placing the hares down outside the 'cave', she ducked in and nudged at the leopon. "Silas...breakfast time."

Time seemed to skid by very quickly for the little leopon, it had been weeks since he had left his mother, since she had handed him over to the leopard Kairi, so little time yet his every day routine was the same and he had quickly gotten used to the travel arrangements.
Kairi was a wonderful mother figure, she cared for him and fed him and made sure he wasn't too tired, but his heart still longed for the pale lioness whom had born him in to the world. He tried not to speak too much of his mother, after all Kairi was so wonderful to him, she was like his mother now.
Rolling from the trees tangled roots the young cub head butted one of Kairi's legs, rubbing his body around her paws in greeting. "Hai Kairi" He whispers looking to the hares before plonking his small butt upon the floor. "Why do hares have long ears Kairi?" It was an odd question to ask perhaps right before having breakfast of hare but it was clearly a very important question, or at least in his mind any way.

Kairi smiled at Silas, then blinked. "Why...that is a very good question." She'd gotten used to small questions like this from him, and she answered each one as if it was just as important as the last or the next. "Well...rabbits aren't as big as us...and they aren't very strong." Her smile returned. "So they have to run from predators like us, instead of fight. Their ears let them hear us really well, so they know when to run."
At least...Kairi thought that was why.

Silas pursed his lips at the answer to his very important question his tiny paws fidgeting for a moment. "But I'm not as big as you Kairi" He pouted a bit "can I have big ears so that I can hear things from lots of ways away?" He blinks up at her owlishly wondering if Kairi could make such a thing happen.
He had decided that if anyone could do it Kairi could, he just hoped that this was one of those yes questions rather than one of those no it was impossible questions.

Kairi giggled and shook her head. "I can't do that Silas...but you can. You see...you grow a little every day. And as you grow, your ears grow. Eventually, you'll be bigger than me, and your ears will certainly be bigger than mine before than." Perhaps it wasn't quite the answer Silas had been looking for...but it was the best she could give him. Kairi rather disliked telling him something was impossible, considering her own belief that nothing was impossible until proven such.

The young albino cub looked deeply thoughtful his watery, dusty pink eyes searched his thoughts to see if this was an acceptable answer. He decided, though very slowly, that it was indeed a good answer and he liked it. Smiling he gave a nod of approval. "Will I really be bigger than you Kairi?" He asked his voice almost pleading for a definite affirmative. He imagined becoming really big and having huge ears just like the hares and being able to hear anything from miles away and protecting Kairi just as she had protected him!
"kairi, when I'm big will you still be my mum?" He blinked owlishly, he knew he had an older brother and he was his real mothers only child before he and his siblings came along. "I don't wanna not have a mum."

Kairi chuckled and nodded. "Yup! You're already bigger than I was when I was your age." It was probably his lion blood. And it didn't help that Kairi was on the smaller side of average for a female leopard. That reminded her...
How big had Riku and Sora gotten? They were both boys after all...even if Sora was a cheetah. She was jarred from that train of thoughts quickly, and nodded. "Of course, Silas!" She nuzzled him, purring. "No matter how big you get, you will ALWAYS be my son...my ray of sunshine and moonlight, all in one."

The young cub smiled, he was more than pleased with that answer and he nestled happily between Kairi's front paws his small head nuzzling in to the bridge of her fore leg.
"One day when I'm big Kairi I'm gunna protect you and make sure that noone hurts you." He smiles burying his nose shyly in her fur "Cause that's what good sons do they protect their mummys."

Kairi couldn't help but grin happily. "Thank you, Silas. Until then though...I'm going to be a good Mom and protect you." He was her son now, and nothing would change that. And if anyone had a problem with it...well, Kairi certainly wasn't helpless.

Silas smiled happily and put both of his paws around one of the hares and tugged hungrily at the meat. He and Kairi were a team, she was his mother now and though he remembered fondly the female whom was his biological mother, Kairi cared for him and was taking him to a place where he wouldn't be confined to the few shady spots of the savannah.
"We'll be home soon won't we ..Mommy?" He smiles hopefully, he had never called kairi his mother before but a little tug at his heart told him he should. She was his mommy now.

Kairi's heart swelled, and her smile grew a little. Everything was okay...everything would stay okay. She nodded.
"Yes. We'll be home soon. And then you can run and play all you want, day or night." Yes...home wasn't far off. Which reminded her...she still had to figure out how to explain the fact she had a son now, without them teasing the life out of her.

Silas beamed brightly and curled up between kairi's front legs, he rested his chin upon her paws and sighed happily. It was a good feeling knowing he would soon have a home where he wouldn't be restricted to the shadowy corners of the world. Where he would be safe to play and not have to worry about the burning sun.
"I'm glad mommy, I really am." he puurrs resting his chin on her paws and closing his sensitive eyes. "I can't wait."
The leopard gently licked the top of her son's head. "I know, Silas. And you won't have to wait much longer." Kairi already had plans of what to show him...where the best spots to hunt were, where the best places to climb were...And all of them avoided the parts of the jungle where sunlight filtered through too much.
It was a curious thing, being a mother to one not of your blood. But Kairi wouldn't trade it for anything else.
Silas sighed happily and let his young mind filter out the bad times, the times of hiding in the darkness and not being able to play with his siblings, that time was behind him now he would soon be home with kairi and life could not have been better.
