I've stopped buying leather, suede, silk, wool and now I have to stop buying things made in CHINA?!

Everything's made in China! I'm not going to look at that link because things like that make me cry, but...

If that's what it takes to further my activism, then so be it. *Nod, nod*

*note* PETA also does its fair share of animal cruelty, they create their own videos, and create the same conditions as factories. Only difference between them and the animal factories is that they video tape what they do.

So I don't support PETA and you shouldn't buy anything from china because most likely its sweatshop made...unless you get union made clothes, and shoes and such...but things made in asia (most of asia, and asia minor area) are usually sweatshop made, anything from H&M a popular clothing chain is all sweatshop made...

and I am done with my rant...feel free to coment/debate

yeah; that's why i don't really stress over sweatshops.

i'm a vegetarian, but that's about it. i don't really pay attention to what i buy. i got a leather louis vuitton wallet before i was really interested in animal rights and i still use it; i have two pairs of suede (i think they're suede at least) pumas; and i have an angora sweater. yes, i'm a pathetic activist. i know.

Martha Stewart is one of their spokespeople for gods sake.... enough said.

And I'm not saying that I agree with excessively torturous animal cruelty in testing labs, but you also must consider that without medical animal testing we would not have vaccinations for chicken pox, tetanus, hepatitis, influenza, or polio, not to mention all the vaccinations for the animals themselves. We would also not have the medicines we do now for cancer, diabetes, or AIDs. So, while I think that animal testing should be monitored, and it is in the US, I think PETA is naive to think it should be stopped altogether. If you had the chance to save the lives a millions of people and millions of other animals, would you do it? Even if it meant being tested on?

I agree with what was just say but i've got to say that giving up on buying fair trade goods seems a little premature. You can buy almost anything fair trade now.
American Apparel and No Sweat are two well known companies that make fair trade clothes... and even shoes. Why buy converses made by nike when you can buy them for the same price sweatshop-free? I think you guys and gals should think twice about the whole fair trade thing.

I don't buy fur, leather, I buy as many things fair trade as possible. I try and match my actions with my words. I don't always succeed mind you... but I gotta try.

That's horrible...
I try to find out what I'm buying, but to tell you the truth, I don't have two days to look up every company on the web before I buy stuff.
I'm no vegetarian, but those Chinese bastards are WAY over the line in killing domestic animals like cats and dogs. People who do that should be shot. To death.

But nooooo... we have to let the bad guys live because killing a human is wrong. The hell is the logic in that when they're killing who knows how many animals a day?

I must say I'm thuroughly appaled by that video....Shnazz of all people should know how offended I am by those images but I can't say I know much about the situation other than what I just saw and from what you all have detailed in your posts. But, from personal opinion I can say that the one comment on animal testing can be ultimately refuted. Why test on an animal when in fact we are obtaining a surplus of humans as well? Seriously, and I couldn't care less about how many people die from disease as they've gotta die some how and soon. The world is duffering from over crowding and without disease and murderers and war and what not then we'll just evolve more advanced diseases from living in joint homes and so close together.

Now I'm not saying I condone killing or say vaccines should be discarded, only that this whole animal cruelty is way out of hand. Animals are not here for us to play with and toy with their lives. It's no different then say what Hitler did in Germany by rounding up certain nationalities and torturing them. We're treating animals like a lesser minority when they should technically have most of hte rights humans due. Now I'm not saying dogs should be allowed to apply for driver's liscenses, but they should get natural rights like the right to life and happiness.

So in finality, I believe steps should be taken against all organizations who allow this kind of act to take place, that includes PETA and all other organizations that know of these situations yet do not press firmly for assertive action. Also, I believe we should start making human skin coats, after all people often say a jacket is like a second skin.

Now lightly off topic on this sweat-shop issue....They work there, because its all they can really do. Yes it is unfortunate (maybe...) that people must work in those poor conditions and what not for large companies but so be it. If they all really wanted to do otherwise, I'm sure they'd try to make it better. I'm sorry but I can't support those who won't support themselves and act on their own.

I think the main reason people should stop buying goods from china is because of the horrible ways they treat their PEOPLE (even though i am an animal rights activist).

America can't interfere with the chinese government (or lack thereof) because we are too dependant on them for trade. If we refuse to buy their goods then maybe our government will strongly considering trying to help those poor people (Anyone remember Tiananmen Square??). I'm not sure how much you would still agree with that if two of your best friends were dying of aids.

And so should a human.

I don't understand why someone, whos only way to support their family is to work in a sweatshop, is treated somewhat second rate.
As far as I'm aware, they're isn't alot of other things they can do. This isn't the homeless man who dug himself into a rut and won't help himself, this a someone who has no other real option.

Whos to say they haven't already tried to make it better, either?
Theres only so much someone in that position can do.
