It was a relatively dreary day, with temperatures well below the sixty degree mark and a cloudy, overcast sky. No one with the right ammount of sense would be out in this kind of weather. But, apparently, someone was out.

The girl stood, feeling the cool sand around her bare feet. Nataya loved days like this on the beach; the weather was cool, but not too cool, and the beach was never crowded. It was a bit windy....perfect. "Today's the day...." she murmered softly to herself, smiling as she started climbing up on a large rock. She was going to teach herself to fly. Thankfully, Momma wasn't here to tell her to stop; she was busy taking 'Zuba in for a meeting with someone. So, as far as Nataya knew, it was just her and the almost-empty beach.

She readied herself, rocking slowly on the balls of her feet as she focused, crouching down. She then jumped, wings flapping furiously, and she was flying....for a second or two. She crashed to the ground, the soft sand softening her fall. She sat back up, brushing sand off of her. She almost did it! ((Of course, every other attempt had also "almost" done it)) She pushed herself back up to her feet, deciding to take a break from her self-taught flying lessons.

Kaimi's usual cheeriness was dampened with the weather. She stubbornly clung to her usual wardrobe of skimpy skirt and sandals, but had reluctantly put on a hoodie as well. She reached the beach and gave a sigh at the water which did not glitter nearly as nicely with the lack of sunshine. Nevertheless, it was still the beach. And better yet, it was NOT school.

This being good enough, she headed toward the sand in just enough time to see Nataya leaping off a big rock. Kaimi recognized her and grinned brightly to see the girl trying to fly, even though it didn't seem to be working out.

"Nataya!" She shouted, trotting over to the other girl. "Are you okay? I saw you trying to fly! You really had it for a minute there!"

Nataya blinked as she heard her name, looking up. Recognizing Kaimi, she grinned brightly. "I'm okay." she said, her tone as cheerful as it usually was. Her grin widened a little. "You think so? I've been really working at it...I think I've almost got it." Her wings fluttered slightly; hopefully, she'd get the hang of this soon...

"So, what brings you to the beach today?" she asked, curious as she tilted her head to the side, tucking a few stray hairs behind her ear. She hadn't seen many other people, just a few beach combers and a couple of rather disappointed tourists.

Kaimi shrugged and flopped down onto the sand, not even bothering to lay out her towel. "I like the beach. It's better than school." She grinned a bit. "And it's better than home. I got a new little sister and she's a real monster." Patting the sand next to her invitingly, Kaimi's grin widened a bit. "And yeah, I totally thought you had it. You were really airborne for a few seconds!"

Nataya fell into a sitting position beside her friend, giggling once as she hit the sand. "You don't like school?" she guessed, seeming a bit confused. She then nodded in understanding; her own sister could be...difficult at times. She grinned brightly, her fingers tracing lazy shapes in the sand. "I've been practicing. Here's best 'cause the sand is soft." she said, thinking of all the times she'd fell. It was a good thing she didn't practice at the park...wood chips hurt.

"Theres just... better things to do than sit at a desk all day." Kaimi responded. "I always feel like I'm trapped when I'm at school. I'd rather be out here, meditating or dancing. Or biking around exploring. Or anything, really, besides school." She glanced sidelong at Nataya. "Maybe you're not staying up because you think you're too heavy or something." Kaimi had been exploring all sorts of mind-over-matter theories. She grinned a little at the thought that maybe Nataya would be interested in them too.

Nataya nodded, listening to her friends explaination. That made sense, in a way. She had trouble understanding that logic, though, since she enjoyed going to school. She then blinked, turning her head to look at Kaimi. "Thinking too heavy....how could that be stopping me?" she asked, interested in the idea. She hadn't heard that kind of reasoning before. "So...if I start thinking I'm lighter, you think I might be able fly?" she questioned further, intrigued by the idea.

"Maybe..." Kaimi responded, warming up to the subject. "Did you know that people only use, like, a tiny part of their brains and nobody really knows what the rest of your brain is capable of? But thoughts are really powerful. People have cured themselves of terrible diseases or made themselves live forever just from thinking about it the right way." These examples, of course, were gross exaggerations but it was the way Kaimi's young mind grasped the vastly complex philosophies. "So maybe... if you just think light... your brain will make your body really believe it and then your wings could hold you up. Or something." She grinned.

Nataya's magenta eyes widened as she listened, engrossed in this amazing new knowledge. "Wow....." she said, finding the theory fascinating. She bit the second knuckle of her index finger lightly, contemplating the information she'd been given. After a moment, she grinned brighter than a flood light. "That might work! You're a genius, Kaimi!" she said, giggling once. To her, the logic made a lot of sense; she'd been thinking she was too big or too heavy to fly, so that may have been the problem.

Nataya's enthusiasm was infectious enough to wipe away Kaimi's irritation with her family and with the crappy weather. She grinned giddily. "Wanna try again, then? I dont think you would have to meditate on it first, but I dont know. They..." Biting off the rest of her sentence, Kaimi decided it might be better not to bring up the voices in her head. They tended to make people uncomfortable. "You should try again! Definitely!"

Nataya smiled, nodding quickly. "Okay!" she said in a tone so cheerful it was a wonder the clouds weren't running away. She was sure she'd be able to do it this time, thanks to her friend. "Just one question, though...who are 'they'?" she asked, her curiousity flaring up a bit. She didn't see anybody else here...maybe she was talking about some of the adults on television?

Kaimi flushed a little and twirled some hair around her index finger. It wasn't really in her to lie. Not about something like this. So she told the truth instead. "They're these voices. That I hear. I dont think anybody else can hear them, though." She shrugged. "They tell me about all sorts of things, though. Like mind-over-matter and meditation and stuff."

Nataya was silent for a moment, then smiled. "That has got to be cool." she said, nodding once. "I wish I could here them or others in my head to learn about cool things like that." She paused again, thinking about it. It had to be like having your own personal teacher, which was awesome in her opinion.

Kaimi grinned in relief at not being called crazy and grabbed Nataya's hand, springing to her feet. "C'mon!" She said, dancing from foot to foot. "Lets see if you can think yourself light enough to fly!"

Nataya giggled, pushing herself to her feet. "Alrighty!" she said, then offered her friend a playful smile. "Race you to the rock!" she said, waiting two seconds before dashing off towards her personal launch-pad, laughing as she went.
