What do you think Albus and Gellert's relationship was? All JKR said was that Albus was romantically interested in him; she never said that the feeling was mutual.

Do you think that Gellert felt the same way and that they had a brief, but emotional/physical romantic relationship?
That Gellert never knew that Albus had those feelings for him?
That Gellert knew about Albus' infatuation and used it in an attempt to manipulate him?

I think they had sort of romance but it never got deeper, maybe Gellert wasn't so in love like Albus was. Then later, Gellert could use Albus's love for him to manipulate him. Gellert reminds me a bit of Draco, he could fall in love but he has that evil guy side that always wins in him.
By the way Min, great idea for a thread biggrin

I think at first it was a friendshippy love. Albus' grew strong and Gellert's was still friendshippy. When the duel came around, I think Gellert tried to use it against him. I think in the end before he died though, Gellert still felt the friendshippy love he had as a teen.

(Yes, I made up the word friendshippy)

Glad you like the thread! smile I thought it would be a good topic since I presumed people would have very different opinions. Here's mine:

I don't think that Gellert loved Albus as a friend or a lover when they were young. I believe that as a fellow genius Albus helped him to feel understood. However, I don't believe that any love existed on his part. There was only lust for power that Albus' assistance could bring...and possible lust for sex. Could they have experimented with physical intimacy the same way they experimented with magic? Perhaps. If they did, I doubt it meant anything emotionally to Gellert the way that it did for Albus. Later, after Albus spared his life and he had years to reflect on his past in prison, Gellert may have developed affection for Albus.

I think that both Dumbledore and Grindelwald felt a bit out of place in their world. They were brilliant and incredibly talented but they had beliefs and a visions that were different from everyone else. Add that to the fact that they were so gifted and you can see how they would feel out of sorts in their world. I think when they met each other it was like finding a kindred spirit. Finally they each had someone who completely understood them. Someone who shared the same ideas and beliefs. They were both equally ambitious and arrogant. I think that is what brought them together initially.

I think Dumbledore's affections grew because Grindelwald was the only other person who really understood him. The difference is that Grindelwald was blinded by his power and Dumbledore still held on to some sense of right and wrong. I believe the affection was always present but Grindelwald would see it more as a hinderance. He would think it a weakness and would ignore it or deny it to himself. I think that even though they had a "falling out", Grindelwald still cared for him on some level. He cared enough to try and thwart Voldemort by refusing to give him the information he asked for. This could have been because he felt remorse for what he had done or because he cared enough for Dumbledore to stop Voldemort from desecrating Dumbledore's grave. Either way, he gave his life for it.

I agree completely. I could easily see a young Albus romancing over Gellert, but not the other way around. In the end, with Gellert, it was just another way to influence Albus.

I think that Grindelwald would have been oblivious to Dumbledore's feelings. He was much to busy plotting his world domination to have noticed it. Although, if he did know, I wouldn't doubt that he would have used his friends feelings to manipulate him and again, I think he would have had to much on his mind to think about whether he had similar feelings.

I'm not sure wether Gellert loved Dumbledore at all. I would rather say that he found him interesting because he was intelligent and th only one Gellert could talk to about his plans.
I don't think that he loved Dumbledore, neither as a friend nor as a lover.
