 Efreet stared at his markings in the slow moving river. He looked into the water with contempt...those stripes on his legs that had been cruelly painted on...warning signs that bid others to stay away and the bright orange colouring that made hunting at night impossible. He stuck out like a sore thumb. Not many approached him anymore. He slapped the water wit his tail angrily. It was never like this before...he used to be respected. It was that pup's fault...that pup had been in the wrong place at the wrong time. Efreet had mistaken it for a rabbit...at least, that was his story on the matter. He had been attacked and knocked out, painted and shoved away from his home. He slapped the water again and then laid down, shutting his eyes and yawning.

Shadow leaped over a particularly large rock, looking back as soon as he had landed for Nani. She was always following him and at first, he was annoyed, but after a while he had gotten used to it. He waited for her to catch up before bounding away again. It was getting easier to sneak away from his parents nowadays. His mother was usually distracted and his father left once in a while for varying periods of time. He skidded to a halt by the stream, lapping up some water. He licked his muzzle clean when he as done and turned, looking to see if Nani caught up, but stopped when he saw a strange orange male. His fur stood on end instinctively, his brain thinking the male was poisonous because of his strange coloring. However, he was still a pup and curiousity won over danger and he padded closer, sniffing. He still wasn't sure how his parents could tell the difference between males and females so he assumed this one would be male.

Efreet had seen the pup since he entered the river area. He tensed, fur tightening and eyes flashing. He growled in reply to the pup and stood up. His tail lashed the air and his gums lifted, huge fangs glistening. His lines flashed on the sunlight and he took a step forwards, a throaty growl in his throat.
He shook his head and then stepped back. It was like a yo-yo...two brains. 'Self control, Effie. Remember the markings....remember. Don't hurt the young ones...don't hurt them. Banter...don't hurt."
He glared. "Shouldn't you be napping, half-pint." he growled. "Your mother's teats are sagging. Go and drink your milk." he spoke with ice in his very skin.

Shadow's steps faltered when he heard the growl and he stopped, looking at the light glinting off the other male's teeth. It didn't occur to him yet that this mean danger. He only stared, fascinated, wondering if he would have teeth as sharp as those when he grew up. He cocked his head in confusion, watching as different emotions flitted across the bright male's face. He ruffled his mane and stiffened his legs like he had seen his father do when the male spoke, trying to make himsef look fierce and older. Pouting he lied and said, "I don't need her milk anymore." The fear was finally starting to settle in with the male's cold tone and his eyes widened slightly in response. He tried to act as if the male didn't scare him. He didn't want to seem weak when Nani was around.

Efreet growled and narrowed his eyes, pacing forwards and standing over him. "You look a little young to be out here....so alone." he said, lifting his lips to show off his fangs once more. "If your so big, then let's have a scrap." he barked, swiping his paw at the young wolf. "Come on. Fight me!"

Shadow backed away when the orange male came closer, his ears pressed against his head. He stopped when he felt Nani and could only stare up with wide eyes at the male. He gasped in surprise when he felt the blow and was sent sprawling a few feet away, a long gash at his side. Deciding that staying still was the best option at this point, he closed his eyes, hoping the male would think he was dead and leave him alone. Then, he heard Nani whimper and he snapped open his eyes to see the male was still there and Nani, left unprotected. Filled with a sudden rage, he got back on his paws and tried to charge at the male. He tripped halfway and tried to get back up, his legs trembling. He was already tired and panting heavily, and he flinched when he felt the stinging wound on his side.

He sneered and lashed the air with his tail. "I warn you now, pipsqueak, don't come at me again. I will rip your heart out and bite it until it pops." he threatened, but he did not even pay attention to the other little helix. He charged the male again , stopping an inch before him and kicking up dust into his little eyes.

Nani had definitely been following Shadow. That's all she ever did. If Shadow went somewhere, Nani was always two steps behind. Why? Because she felt the urge to be with him. He was her protection, her saviour. Without him she was nothing, just a tiny little scrap thrown to a den of starving tigers.
She followed after him, but managed to trip herself up, so it took a while to get to him...
When she did however, there was a scary orange male staring the little puff down. Nani was cowering quietly close by, ears folded back. And when the older wolf struck... Nani let out a little whimper, wanting to go forward, but scared stiff and stuck in her tracks. The orange male seemed only interested in the young boy.... Nani's eyes widened as she realised that Shadow was bleeding....
The little pup instantly felt her fur stand on end, and the dirt in Shadow's eyes was the last straw, "Stop it! He's hurt!!! You're hurting him!!" the girl's flowery voice pierced through the air, and she darted at the orange beast's back, leaping up and sinking her tiny teeth into the helix's tail.... But alas, she knew it probably just felt like a bug had landed on the limb.
She was shaking so violently, scared out of her wits. Why did she do that? She let go of it instantly, large innocent eyes looking up at the other. She felt tears spring to her eyes. She was going to get hit. She was going to be hurt.... She lowered her head, ears folded flat to her head as she trembled, "Please.... Don't hurt him..." she was scard, but willing to take the fight in his place...

Shadow only tried his best to growl louder, angry that this male was ordering him around. However, his small and undeveloped muscles couldn't support him for much longer and he fell with a small squeal when dust was kicked into his eyes. He managed to cough most of the particles out but that only caused even more dust to rise and he flailed at his eyes pitifully. Tears started forming, a natural reaction to try and get the foreign substances out. However, Shadow only knew them as a sign of weakness and kept them back, his eyes burning. He tried to get up and he stumbled around a few feet until he fell back again, breathing heavily. He could hear Nani speaking and he tried to open his eys but his vision was blurry and he couldn't find her. Whimpering, he nosed around for her but the dust was still there and he curled into himself, finally giving himself up to the tears.

Efreet smirked at the pup's wailing attempts to get the sediments from his eyes, but her snarled and turned, running a quick circle when the young female had latched onto his tail. When she released, he did not give chase, instead putting the sore base of his tail to his maw and giving it a few licks, grooming the hairs back into position.
THEN he turned on her. He stared her down, lips lifted as he watched her shrink before him. "That was a foolish move." he said, stepping even closer, jaws dripping. His lifted his paw once more- ready to swipe across her neck.

Nani was a quivering puddle of nothing, eyes wide as she whimpered and hiccuped. Then she had a brilliant idea run into the side of her skull... Run away! And that's what she did. She darted inbetween the wolf's legs, grabbing at Shadow's neck with her teeth, desperately trying to get them away...
But Shadow was so freaking heavy!
She barely got a few feet away, before she gave in, dropping the other pup and collapsing. She closed her eyes. They weren't going to make it. They were going to be killed by this male, ad were either going to be thrown into the river, eaten, or their corpses would be left there to rot. "Papa.... Mama.... I'll see you soon...." she mumbled, before breaking into tears.
Anyone who'd hurt a crying girl would have to be a heartless lowlife...

Efreet did not give chase this time. Instead he sat, lips quivering. He was staring at his paws again. 'Have to use self-control, Efreet. Don't hurt the little bugs. You have a home here. You can't afford to be chased out again. Just leave them...' he thought.
He looked to the pups again and narrowed his eyes. "Get up." he said to both of them. "Come on. GET UP! You can handle it." He snarled. "UP! NOW!" He charged, barking madly. He had to assure that he didn't kill any of them.

Shadow's sight was still blurry with tears and dust to see anything coherent but he noticed when someone grabbed on to him. At first he flailed around, thinking it was the other male, but stopped soon. He was still tired and he realized it was Nani when he was trying to get his breath back. He wiped the rest of the tears away, so he could se her better, and was saddened to see her collapsed next to him. He couldn't protect her and they were going to die soon. She seemed to believe it, as well. He closed his eyes tightly, waiting for the fatal blow but it never came. He was surprised by what he heard. The male wasn't going to kill them? He turned to look and was startled to see him charging at them, barking furiously. Shadow got to his feet and they shook violently, trying to get him to fall again so that they could rest. He tried to still them, so he wouldn't look as scared, and stayed where he was. It wasn't like he could move anyways, he thought. It was all he could do just to keep himself up in front of Nani protectively. He didn't even bother trying to glare defiantly at the male.

Nani flinched when the noise volume turned up. They were being yelled at? She looked up as Shadow rose to his feet. He shouldn't be moving! He was injured! She was up against him in a minute, pressing against his bloody side unintentionally to help him stand. She looked to the large orange helix with her innocent, wide blue eyes.
"P-Please, sir! He can't move, can't you see? He's injured!" swallowing, she looked to Shadow, knowing what she had to do. She pulled back a bit, and, while biting her lip, rolled onto her back in between the two males, giving the other her belly. This was a last resort thing, after all. Nani looked up at the orange male, tilting her head back to give him her throat as well. She would protect Shadow.

Efreet stared at the pups and sighed as they looked up at him weakly. "Weaklings." he said. He saw Nani roll over submissivly. He had not realized how badly he had harmed them.
He sat down and sighed. "weak little whelps." he growled. "come on, female, get up. I barkey scratched your friend."
