Siobhan was quite mystified by the white fluff that had dropped overnight. It was freezing cold--but that might have just been the weather. Somehow, since the begining of summer, it had just gone downhill and the cold didn't seem to be slowing. She'd had to watch the beautiful green trees fade orange and yellow, and then they all died. And now there was strange fluffy white... stuff all over the ground!

The mare sighed as she stared at it from her sleeping place in the field. She was very nearly buried--between the long brown grass, and the fluffy white that had appeared while she slept. She hoisted herself to her feet, shaking off the debris, and finally having to unfurl her wings to get the fluff out of them too. She felt the sting of winter's chill as soon as she let the feathery appendages leave her sides where she'd been using them as a sort of blanket from the cold. She began wandering through the field, with no real direction to head for. Siobhan just wanted to get away from the strange things of the world that no one had bothered to warn her of.

The Christmas mare dozed in the trees that edged the field. It was quite comfortable in there and she had slept much longer than usual. She was breathing deeply and calmly when a chunk of snow that had fallen to rest along one bare tree branch was disturbed by a gust of chilly wind. Lightly it fell to rest on her muzzle. By accident she inhaled some of it and woke up with a little snort.

Snow! Teppy was on her hooves in a bound of filly-like energy. the last time she ha seen snow was when she was just a newborn huddled up close to her brother and sister. Grinning with glee she kicked it about, sending puffs of it up on her already snow-flecked back. It was cold, but for the moment she was too excited to care.

Then the mare abruptly stopped in her tracks. In her joy she had ended up in the field. She began to shiver violently not in cold but fear... The open space was so unknown and strange and... frightning. With an odd little whinny she fled back towards the trees and almost ran right smack into one, eying the field like it had done her some kind of personal wrong.

Siobhan's ear perked back when she heard a sound from the trees--quite a few sounds really. She grinned. She really could care less about the cold, uninteresting, unfamiliar fluff that covered the ground, but she could deal with unfamiliar sounds. Unfamiliar sounds usually meant something that was at least relatively fun--unless they led to another Soquili. But what were the chances anyone would be out and about when it was so cold? Not likely...

She trotted towards the sound, until the source of the noises emerged from the white trees--another mare. And... what was she doing? She seemed to be hopping about, kicking up snow everywhere. As Siobhan watched, utterly and completely confused, the mare stopped suddenly. Was she running because she'd seen Siobhan? Or was she simply in need of... serious mental help?

Forgetting her qualms about meeting those she'd never come across, Siobhan ran to the mare. "Is there something wrong with you?"

Concentrating on her breathing, Teppy closed her eyes. The field was harmless, the trees were right there just in case... Her breaths gradually slowed as she counted them. One, two , three....

At the count of 11 there was Siobhan, bluntly questioning her. Teppy opened her eyes and looked up at the stranger, a light frown accentuating the natural stripes on her brow. "Nothing is WRONG with me," she snapped. But then she sighed. It wasn't like her to show such hostility to someone. The fright had left her a little irritable, and she shook it off quickly. After all it was her own fault she ended up in the field in the first place. "Sorry, I didn't mean to sound so harsh," she apologized, looking thoroughly embarrassed. "Nevermind me."

Siobhan cocked her head to the side, not at all phased by Teppy's reaction--a lot of people spoke to her like that. "Are you sure? You were jumping around like there was a bobcat on you.." She looked the mare over, like she was expecting to find a tiny one hidden somewhere on her body, and then continued. "And then you just spooked. Are you okay?"

It seemed very strange to Siobhan, how this mare acted. She didn't make an ounce of sense. Even now, when she seemed calmer... she must have something wrong with her and was just embarrassed, Siobhan decided.

Teppy blinked, then gave a sheepish grin. "Oh, I was just happy to see snow! But..." She hesitated a little. Teppy had told others that she wasn't comfortable in open spaces, but she had never actually told someone that she was afraid of them. She wondered how much she could say, before Siobhan thought she was crazy. But the mare already thought Teppy was a little crazy, so what could it hurt?

The Christmas mare stood up taller, raising her head proudly. Everyone was scared of something... why should she be so embarrassed about it? "This may sound silly, but I'm afraid of fields. And clearings, and other big wide, treeless spaces." She suppressed a shudder and turned her back to the field before continuing. "I usually stay in the forest. I wasn't paying attention to where I was going."
