This is just because I know that a lot of people from Australia, if they read this, are going to get incredibly confused, so here is what Wikipedia says on Prop 8 (I just quickly Googled it looking for the actual proposition, but I don't have a lot of time so if anyone could find it and post it that would be great)
Proposition 8 is a California State ballot proposition that would amend the state Constitution, to limit marriage to unions between a man and a woman, overturning a recent California Supreme Court decision that had recognized same-sex marriage in California as a fundamental right. The official ballot title language for Proposition 8 was, "Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry"
Arguments of Prop 8 Supporters (ie, people who want to ban gay marriage):
- to protect family values
- to protect what their children learn in school
- to keep marriage sacred in the eyes of the church
http://www.protectmarriage.com/Arguments of those against Prop 8 (ie, people who believe there should be gay marriage in California):
- equal rights
- freedom of choice
- respecting others' decisions
http://www.noonprop8.com/Note: Personally, I am AGAINST proposition 8. I believe that no matter who you love, you should be allowed to get married. And how does gay marriage even affect our lives? It's up to the couple in question whether or not they wish to be married; we have no right to tell them that they cannot. I know I've left out a TON of arguments, I'm just adding this to help clear things up for people who don't live in California in case they want to add their views. I am NOT a prop 8 supporter, and I think that passing it was wrong.
