Another Stone In The Road
Korene stopped walking and paused to lean against the trunk of a tree. She felt tired, not quite herself. It should not have been time for a rest; There had been times when she had walked twice as far without half as many rests as she had taken today. She leaned her bow against the tree and lifted her quiver from her back. Sitting on the cool, damp ground, her mind wandered to the events of the night before.
She had been asleep in her camp when she was ambushed by a small band of orcs. Korene had slain them without much trouble; their heavy breathing had awoken her in plenty of time to ready herself and still pretend to be asleep before they broke into the clearing. However, she had sustained one small cut near her knee from an orcish sword. It was not deep, but it was painful; the type of pain only a dull, rusty blade could give.
She leaned her head back against the tree, closing her eyes. She didn’t care if her long, golden hair got caught on the bark, as most women of her people would. They thought of themselves as “high elves”, regal more than useful. Korene did not want to be so.
She was on her own journey, and that made it one that all the other elves in her home city frowned upon. To them, their business did not involve the affairs of others, only the affairs of themselves, and Korene’s leaving the city to travel on her own meant she was an outlaw of sorts, unwelcome to return.
Korene rolled up her pant leg to check her injury. She’d had a few thin cloth bandages in her pack that she had used to wrap the wound with. She unwrapped it slowly, wincing at the sting. The cut was green and pus-filled. The outside edges were a horrible shade of red. This was, no doubt, the cause of her fatigue.
With a sigh, she wrapped the bandage back around her leg. She would have to find some Raven’s Bane for the infection. Hopefully, it grew in this part of the wood.
