Last Night when I was watching CNN and tracking the presidential election I noticed something astonishing:

CNN used real holograms on public television! Both parties could see them and they were 3-D and all....

The holograms included:

-A beamed in political correspondent.
-Holographic Capitol Hill.
-Holographic House/Senate image.

When I told my Grandma she said:

"Back in my day we didn't have all dese fancy shmancy contraptions that all dem durn wippershnappers mess with!"

No joke, she really said that...

...That seems far fetched, yet I could be wrong. But when I hear hologram I think of those cards that change pictures when you look at them from different angles.

It's more like an animated person or object that is life-sized that you can touch and see from all angles.

Like you mean a 3D Projection? It's not possible. At least from what I know. In the show 2057, they talked about it.

Considering this is a science guild I would refrain from the word "Impossible"....In science nothing is impossible. It was a real hologram....The CNN News Anchors could see it, the hologram could see them and whatnot. They said they were not joking or lying in any way shape or form...

I'm not too knowledgeable in holograms, but according to this news bit (also contains the video), it wasn't a true hologram.

The more relevant part:
Quote:
While CNN is touting its special effects from election night as a '"hologram," that may not be technically the case. CNN's "hologram" seems to have been done using overlay images and a green screen to virtually put the reporter in the same studio as Wolf Blitzer. But true holography uses a different technique to create a true 3D image of a person standing in the studio. According to Wikipedia, "holography is a technique that allows the light scattered from an object to be recorded and later reconstructed so that it appears as if the object is in the same position relative to the recording medium as it was when recorded. The image changes as the position and orientation of the viewing system changes in exactly the same way as if the object was still present, thus making the recorded image or hologram appear three-dimensional."

True holography technology has been demonstrated by many other companies. Telstra, the Australian phone company, used a hologram earlier this year to beam its chief technology officer from Melbourne to a business meeting about 460 miles away in Adelaide. Cisco Systems has also used holograms in demonstrations to talk about its telepresence products. Cisco's telepresence solution does not transmit hologram images, but it does use high-definition cameras and TV screens to make executives in different locations feel like they are having an in-person meeting.

Seems like a gadget for people who have a lot of money razz

That clarifies some things for me.
So from what I read, it was a green screen in real life, but was altered in the video to make it LOOK 3D. That's what I understand from the report. In the show 2057 they talk about this, but the farthest they have gotten to a real life hologram is producing a mist so fine, you cant feel it, and projecting a image onto that mist. But that still is only 2D.

Gorax is right on. That was absolutely not what they "claimed" it was; it was TV magic.
