Alessia sighed deeply and tossed her mane. Wasn't this always how things worked out?

The afternoon was wearing on, and there had been no sign of the mare the unicorn was here to meet. Had her mother's unreliable hawk familiar been wrong about the time or place, or was it just the mare being as negligent as always? No matter, hours had passed since the designated meeting time, and Alessia could only hope what her mother had wanted to tell her wasn't as important as the equally unreliable bird had made it out to be.

Dark eyes glanced up at the sky, it would be dusk in another couple hours... After another sigh Alessia leaned down and cropped at the grass. She had been waiting this long already, it wouldn't hurt to wait a little longer. Her mother couldn't have chosen a nicer spot to keep the unicorn waiting, a sunny field with sweet grasses was certainly more pleasant than other places she had been asked to meet at. Maybe the mare would actually show up this time, but Alessia wouldn't hold her breath.

Shaking her head, Czarina snorted, tossing her head in an attempt at dodging a fly that was buzzing around her head. The insects were far better, now that the weather had begun to cool, but continued to make her wish that winter would come a little more quickly.

Finally, she noticed, she seemed to have shaken her assailant, and smiled. With one last flick of her long tail, she decided to make her way over to a field nearby that seemed to have particularly long, luxuriously sweet grasses.

As she stepped into the open meadow, scales glittering brightly in the mid-afternoon light, she stopped, noticing the other mare who stood some ways away, cropping at the grass.

Nickering a greeting, she made her way in the other's direction, observing carefully for signs that she did not wish to be disturbed.

Alessia lifted her head at the friendly greetings, answering it with her own smile. As frustrating as the afternoon had been, it was easy to let it go when she had need to. If she never let go of the irritation that dealing with her mother brought on, she'd spend the rest of her life in a foul state fit to scare off even a skinwalker. Just the mental image of herself storming around was enough to cheer the gentle unicorn.

"Good afternoon," she said as the mare came closer, her voice soft and welcoming. It hardly seemed like there was a trace of frustration inside her.

Waiting until she'd drawn a little closer to speak again, Czarina took her cue from the other mare, her own stance relaxed and open. "Good afternoon," she began, flicking her tail at a stray fly that worried at her flanks. Inclining her head briefly, she introduced herself, not one to hang back. "My name's Czarina." Her eyes stood out brightly, expression politely expectant.

Looking up at the sky, she stared for a moment before lowering her gaze and looking back at Alessia. "Couldn't ask for better weather, hmm?"

"I'm Alessia, it's a pleasure to meet you," the unicorn replied with a smile. Her own long tail swished in a sinuous manner, her company wasn't the only one somewhat bothered by the insects. Thankfully it wasn't too hot or humid.

"It has been pleasant, quite sunny today, but not hot enough to dry out the grasses or bake me inside my fur." Alessia's face wore a very subtle joking expression as she finished, someone less observant might mistake her for being serious despite the light-hearted, gentle tone.

"The pleasure's mine," Czarina grinned, stamping one of her fore-hooves lightly on the ground, the action prompting one of the buzzing insects to take flight.

Inclining her head in agreement, Czarina's eyes flashed with her own mild amusement. "Always troublesome, that." she observed, following the statement with a soft laugh.

"It won't be long, though, until the colder weather rolls in, at this point." Sh wrinkled her nose slightly, not really looking forward to that. She didn't mind the winter, but that transitional period, before her longer coat grew in, had a tendency of being particularly unpleasant.

"I would gladly trade this hot weather for icicles. At least for the first three days," Alessia laughed, poking fun at how quickly preferences for such things could change. Mastering the ability to want what you've got could be quite challenging between seasonal extremes.

She glanced up at the sky briefly, catching no sign of either cloud or hawk familiar before turning back to her company. "Say, you haven't happened to see a mare like me in the area, have you?"

Czarina grinned back reflexively, Alessia's easy humor putting her somewhat more at ease. "It depends on my mood, most of the time--there are days where the bite in the air is pleasing, but the next day I might wish for the full heat of summer..."

Trailing off, she shook her head. "No, you're the first I've come across at all, actually." Cocking her head to the side, she eyed the other mare curiously--was she searching for a sibling, or some other relative, perhaps?

"Are you expecting someone?" she asked a moment later, keeping her tone light enough as to not be demanding, if the other wasn't comfortable going into more detail.

Alessia's easy smile fell with a sigh. "I was, actually. My mother asked me to meet her, she said she had something important to tell me."

The unicorn tried not to look too put off, nor was she willing to elaborate on the latest in that long line of her mother's failings. That mare had once again left her hanging, and as much as Alessia had expected it, she refused to let the behaviour affect her own reliability and attended the forgotten meeting anyway.

Oh well. It wasn't her place to bring disgrace to her mother, that one was well capable of disgracing herself without Alessia's help. "It must not have been that important after all," she said with a regretful smile.
