A yawn split the grey dragon's face for a moment, brilliant white fangs flashing in the mid afternoon sun before her jaws closed again, and the moment was over. Multiple sets of eyes blinked at seemingly random intervals. She was stretched out on a good sized rock, wings spread on either side to catch the sun. What a nice place this scrub forest was. She'd come here purposely on her travels, to seek refuge. For when she was harassed and attacked, life was less that good. But peave was rumored to prevail here, for sake of a neutral meeting ground. And so far it had seemed to give her just that. No one had bothered her. Though no one had come across her yet either.

A tufted tail flicked a few times, and then lay still. Zephyiote was awfully tired. She hadn't rested in over two days, so such a comfortable place felt like heaven. It was warm and sheltered amongst the trees, there was no breeze. Splayed across the rock, she must've looked quite the odd sight, but what did it matter? What did she care? For now at least, this was good. Better than good, this was great. A nice nap, some food, and she would be good as new and traveling again at the end of the day. Assuming nothing went wrong, anyway...

Loving the breeze flowing past her, Florica barely realized where she was flying or flying to. Her little companion, Besnik, flew by her side just trying to keep up to the massive Painter.

"Um Florica...? Do you... think... we could slow down... please?"

Besnik said between pants. Florica opened her eyes and stopped abruptly in annoyance. Before she could say anything in retaliation, the little thing went by. Before she knew it, Besnik apparently had passed out and was falling to the scrub forest below.

"Oh dear..."

Falling after the little thing, Florica free falled quickly to the ground to attempt to catch the little mimicgryph. Seeing was Bes was falling into, Florica stopped again suddenly in hopes her little friend wasn't going to get eaten. Besnik woke back up and shrieked just before he landed on top of a fellow Sandpainter. Florica landed softly near her and walked closer cautiously.

Zephyiote's scattered train of thought jumped to attention as soon as she picked up the disturbance of misplaced air. Her body remained still, but her head and neck whipped around, jaws parted, intending to snap up the creature causing her disruption. They clicked shut several inches shut of the offending Mimicgryph, once she realized what it was. No use eating them. Too feathery, and all too often they were companions to Painters. She didn't need any more dragons trying to cause her harm at the moment.

She leaned back into a more relaxed position. And though she closed the eyes on her head, the ones splattered on her chest and legs watched this strange new painter closely. Oh great. Just what she needed, someone to bother her, and try to chase her off. Zephyiote really wasn't in the mood for such nonsense. "You should be careful of your little bird pet. It might get eaten one of these days." It wasn't the first time she'd almost snapped up someone's familiar. Not the first time she'd almost eaten a mimicgryph either. Honestly, it was as if she was a magnet for animals she wasn't allowed to eat. How frustrating.

Florica sauntered over and picked up the terrified mimicgryph.

"Apologies for this one..."

She glared at the little thing as Besnik replied with a sheepish smile and set it down next to her, where he suddenly scurried behind one of Florica's legs.

"I'm sorry. It was my fault. He tried to keep up and failed."

Florica picked up her right back leg as the shaking Besnik clung to her leg.

"I'm Florica. You?"

Her eyes wandered over this strange Painter, as she's never seen one like her before. Though she wasn't one to judge. Realizing what she was doing, Flor shook herself of embarrasingly staring and smiled again.

Being stared at was nothing new for Zephyiote. It didn't bother her like it used to. They just didn't understand what they were doing. She liked to think that anyway. She was a rather fascinating individual. A kimera assortment of different parts. No doubt if she were a stranger, and encountered another like herself, she would be equally, or even more curious. It was her nature. At least this stranger, Florica, had the decency to act polite about it. Apologizing and what not. That was a pleasant suprise. Not many painters were polite with her. Curt was the typical attitude.

"Not your fault...I am just glad we averted an incident..." She shuddered internally just thinking of all the trouble she'd gotten in the last time she'd gotten in a mess like that. Ooh...it'd been bad. She'd been more careful since then. It paid off in situations like this.

"Name wise? I am Zephyiote. In lieu of Zephyr, the West Wind. Lover of the arts and scientist extraordinare." She was rather proud of herself. And true to the stereotypical dragon, could be incredibly vain at times. But also, extremely humble. It was interesting to watch her play of emotions throughout the day. And her responses.

She dismissed Florica as a curious bystander, looking to hand around her a little more, just to watch the freak in action. With Zephyiote being the freak. It was a role she'd played numerous times over the years. She couldn't say it was anything new.

Florica nodded and folded her back legs underneath her, wrapping her tail around her haunches. Besnik scurried out from under the Painter just in time and perched himself on her shoulder.

"I'm glad we avoided that as well. I don't know what I'd do without Besnik. He's been with me since I could remember."

She turned her head back to Besnik, who was slowly but surely calming down.

"Zephyiote. Interesting name. And a scienctist? Even more interesting. What kind of things do you study?"

Flor was hoping she wasn't prying too much. She hasn't seen a Pan'lun in a very long time and always found them interesting. As she sat there, a sudden wave of exhaustion fell over her and lowered herself onto the dusty flooring of the shrub forest.

Florica wasn't sure of what to think of this pan'lun. This couldn't be much more of an interesting pairing. A pretty looking sand painter talking to an interestingly formed pan'lun. But then again, anything could appear in this area and she was eager to find out. Flor lay there quietly as she awaited Zeph's reply. She seemed interesting and wanted to find out more.

Zephyiote snorted when asked what she studied. "If I spent the rest of the day talking to you, I would not be able to explain all that I study...give me a minute to think..." She pondered a way to give a synopsis on the matter. "I suppose you could say I study origin, and conciousness...but neither of those is quite right either..." she sighed. Knowing it wouldn't be possible to put to exact words what it was she was trying to do.

Zephyiote watched the little Mimicgryph. They certainly seemed popular as familiars. Many a painter had them. Maybe one day she would find a companion like that. And then she wouldn't be so lonely. Surely a mimcgryph wouldn't hate her because she was different? Oh well, she had no time in her life for companions now. She was traveling, and the things she intended to do would probably be best undertaken alone.

It was rare Zephyiote ran into the standard painters. Up in the mountains, it was mostly Chi'Lin for her, whom she did a LOT of business with, to garner gems etc. from. She used them frequently in her studies, and she was obsessed with carving statues etc. Silk she liked even more. Both the bandage on her arm and the cord around her neck were her crafted by her own hands, simple though they were. They were imbued with a lot of aura, a lot of energy.

"So Florica, what is a girl like you doing here?" If this other painter was allowed to ask questions, it was only fair she should be allowed to ask her own.

((btw, is this color ok? If not I could change it to something slightly darker?))

"Interesting."

Florica figured she should just move on with the matter with the Pan'lun's response. Flor would've been interested to hear more, but she also figured that could be a conversation for a later time if time permit. She continued to casually look over Zephyiote, and hopefully wasn't offending her. Florica just wanted to study her hopeful ally, and if not ally then enemy. However she was wishing that this Pan'lun would be an aquaintence at most.

"Well... originally I was just wandering the lands. No real business at hand at the time. And how I ended up in your midst..."

Florica turned her massive head in the direction of Besnik and shrugged lightly.

"Which I apologize again for. Shouldn't have pushed him so far. He's a little thing with a bigger beast."

She chuckled lightly and gave a slight grin.

}~{It's fine ^_^}~{

Zephyiote was glad the question wasn't push further. Discussing her studies could be difficult, because some of her experiments were...of questionable moral. And frowned upon, if not enough reason for her to be shunned of exiled other for something other than her appearence. "It is quite a feat he can keep up with you. Congratulations Besnik, you have earned a gleam of respect in my eye, I did not mean to frighten you earlier, or to eat you." She wasn't sure whether Mimicgryph's were capable of advanced thought, but rather Florica think her silly for talking to a dumb beast, than to scorn an intelligent being by demoting its status. If Zephyiote valued anything in life, it was equality. One of the things that seemed permanently out of reach for her.

"I am curious...where do you meet him? I have encountered many a painter with familiars, but...where do you, 'acquire' them, though that feels a poor word for what I am trying to describe...how do you 'meet' your familiar? How did you come to be a companion to Besnik?...those sound better."

PostPosted: Sat Nov 08, 2008 10:49 pm

Besnik perked up again at the other beast adressed him.

"Thank you. And it's... all right. I didn't mean to fall on you..."

The little creature stayed on Florica's shoulder in fear of the other, greater creature. Besnik wasn't the most courageous mimicgyph in the lands. Florica smiled at the respect that Zephyiote gave and nodded.

"Well... I'm not entirely sure. I'm supposing my mother gave him to me while I was just a hatchling. So we practically grew up together."

Florica reached a claw back and pet the mimicgryph. Besnik let out a small squeak since he was still a little jumpy, but accepted the attention from his larger companion.

"But not i'm not entirely sure how any other painter get's theirs. I figured they were found somewhere in these lands and bonded somehow."

Giving a bit of a naive answer, she shrugged and wish she could give a better answer. Florica never really thought about how other painters got their familiars. She figured most, if not all got them from birth from their parents. But again, a naive answer. Florica ran away from her family members a long time ago, and it's been her and Besnik for almost as long as she could remember.

There were clicking sounds as Zephyiote drummed her talons against the sandstone. Ears flicking a little, indicating thought, and her tail swished, as if to swat away some invisible fly. "Indeed, familiars are captivating. What compels two or more creatures so unbelievably different to form such close bonds...what is behind it? Who was the first. I mean, do not take this the wrong way, but if they were not familiars...mimicgryphs, owls, coyotes...they would be food... Zephyiote sighed. "Indeed...very fascinating..."

Zephyiote sat up, stretching, extending her wings for a moment, working out the little sores from lying still. "You would not happen to know where could get some water, would you? I find myself quite thirsty."

PostPosted: Sun Nov 09, 2008 12:37 pm

After Zephyiote finished her last sentence about the familiars, Florica began to go into her thoughts and think about that subject. What if she just ran into another familiar in the wild and didn't know it really was a familiar... What if she never had Besnik, would she be different? A million thoughts rushed through her mind until Zeph brought her back.

"Oh uh, I'm not sure actually."

She's been flying for hours and didn't even notice how thirsty she was. Florica smacked her lips and looked around and saw nothing but sand and shrub. She stood up and knocked off Besnik in the process. Besnik gave a glare and scampered over to Zephyiote and sat in the shadow of the rock.

Zephyiote leaned her head down, sniffing Besnik over. Not trying to intrude or anything, but she was curious. One of the distinguishing freatures that definetly showed her personality to be Pan'Lun. Maybe she would get a familiar sometime. If one would have her. Mimicgrpys certainly WERE pretty. She lifted her head, and stood up straight. "Well then, should we go look for a source? Surely you would be thirsty, from flying in this heat?"

Heck, she herself hadn't even been flying, and she was thirsty. My my, how much effort it took to relax! What with all the lying still, getting drinks of water, lazing about, moving to be in the sun...honestly. Zephyiote wasn't sure how some people did it.

Florica seemed nice, she decided. At least she was polite enough to minimize staring, and she didn't gawk or state obvious things, or rude ones. Too often people's ignorance and insolence showed when they said things meaning the best, that in turn just showed their biases. They didn't see a painter. They saw fifteen eyes. They saw torn wings. They saw excessively sharp fangs and horns...oh well. Who needed them anyways?

Besnik jumped in surprise when he felt the greater beast dip her head low to him. Cowering a little, he had hoped since Flor was here, he would not be eaten.

"That sounds like a brilliant idea."

Still looking around, she spread out her wings once again and watched Zephyiote as she stood. Never has she seen a Pan'lun such as her. In fact, Florica has barely seen any Pan'lun at all. Her travels were mainly in the sky and in the canyon, so her main acquaintences consisted of fellow sandpainters. She was hoping she was not being rude, even if she felt she was too much of a good painter. All she did was help others, which is not a bad trait but sometimes it gets boring. She let a out a sigh and stretched out the kinks in her wings before she motioned to Besnik.

Besnik looked back to Zephyiote and scampered over to Flor and scurried onto her back before she pushed off the ground and held herself in the air with her beating wings. While waiting for Zephyiote, she continued to look around the area to see if she saw a small body of water.

Zephyiote nodded, a bit suprised that this girl, Florica, was willing to come and seek water with her. Of course, there could be a misunderstanding. That was always possible. Not many others willingly communed with her. She glanced over her shoulder at the pretty beige and cream painter, with the little flower on her head. What a pretty bloom. She couldn't recall the name of such foliage though. She didn't spend a lot of time researching plants. Astronomy was her natural science. The rest of what she did was complicated. Hard to fathom concepts.

She smiled at Florica and Besnik, before snapping forward, throwing her wings open, and surging forth, legs flexing as they threw her off the ground with incredible force, a couple dozen feet in the air, as she twisted, writhed, and slipped around, like a snake in the water. But a dragon in the air. She was so free up here. Not restrained. How glorious it was, to be a creature gifted with flight! She couldn't imagine the horrible feeling that must go with being a flightless being. What did Chi'Lin think, to see all of the other painters roaming the skies? Was their agility really compensation, in their eyes? Zephyiote would sooner die than remain earthbound, she thought.

She didn't rise too high off the ground. Assuming there was water close by. This foliage couldn't survive long without some nearby source of water. Then, a little ways off, she spotted it. A thin ribbon of blue. A smal stream branching off a much larger river no doubt. But it would do. "You see that, Florica?" she questioned, not sure whether the other painter was following or not.
