It's different for every school.
My college, you have to write out a resume, do an interview, conduct a couple of pieces, and then show off your marching skills.
In my high school, you had to fill out a paper and the band director would choose which one was the most qualified.
Ask your band director, or your current drum major(s). Or else, you've never going to know for sure.

I tried out for drum major at my middle school, lost by one point!
(we had votes <3)

heres what my band did last year:
Commands:

Band Ten Hut

Conducting:
1,2,3,4,2,2,3,4,3,2,3,4,4,2,3,4,1,2,3,2,2,3,3,2,3,4,2,3,1,2,2,2,3,2,4,2,1,2,3,4,1,2,2,2,3,2,4,2,1,2,3,2,2,3,3,2,3,4,2,3,1,2,3,4,2,2,3,4,3,2,3,4,4,2,3,4,cutoff.
if your confused it goes from 4/4 4 times, 3/4 4 times, 2/4 4 times, and 1/4 4 times. then you go back up and cut off when you get to 4/4 the 4th time.
Then, cutoff on count 1 of 4/4, cut off on count 2 on 4/4, cutoff on count 3 on 4/4, and cutoff on count 4 of 4/4.
Then, conduct to a song of your choice (doesn't have to be a marching band it can be a rock band or country or whatever) that's under 2 minutes.
Interview:
Why do you want to be Drum major?
Are you up for the pressures of being Drum major?
What do you think you need to work on the most?
What is your view of a good drum major?
Do you believe in power hunger?
The questions and other things change every year and with every school so it may be different 4 u.

we had to write a letter of intrest and then we got like challenges. like we had to pick out music and sort it. and we had to conduct. then we ha dot give stuff to all our teachers. then the whole band voted. then the principal voted, and the vice. then it was announced at our band party.
it turned out a dead tie and my BD and senior DM sat for like an hour trying to decide. right up until they had to put it on the slide show.
i was a lucky ducky.. and cried. it was wonderful.

i have no idea we didnt have drum major not enough of us only 6 of us
