It was raining. Bombei didn't hate the rain, really, but he had a much harder time when it came down like this. His fur was sodden and his massive mane hung limp and heavy from his neck and chest, weighing him down. He was nearly invisible against the gray-blue sky, and from above he looked like nothing more than a puddle, albeit a moving one. Lightning flashed out of the sky, shortly followed by a boom that made even the old lion hunker down in a start.
"I need to get out of this mess." He grumbled to himself. Off i the distance there was what looked like a stand of trees. That could be dangerous, as lightning would come for them more than anything, he knew, but it was all he could see. With a sigh he turned and went towards them.
As he got nearer he started to lope along faster, eager to be out of the downpour. The tree stand he'd seen turned out to be little more than three old shrubs grown too large and twisted up in each other, but that was for the best. The interlocking branches made a fine canopy, and the dripping lion threw himself under their shelter, shaking and sending water in all directions.

"Whatcha doen?" A voice came from above him as green eyes peered down to the large gray lion. The small cheetah was upside down in one of the branches, looking down at the lion, her maw twisted in a content and playful smile.
She giggled lightly as she rolled around on the branch, sinking her claws into the wood for more leverage. "Hehe, you look silly." She said in a sing song voice as she rolled onto her belly and dangled her front paws down off the branch. She tilted her head to the side, water rolling off of her right ear.

Bobmei blinked and looked up, appearing rather silly with his mane hanging limp around his eyes. Well! A cub way out here! He wrinkled his nose as the drop that fell from her ear splatted onto it. "Well now I'm drying off again. You should come down, you'll catch your death of cold in this weather."
He then ignored the cub, content to shake himself off again. No sense scaring the poor thing by seeming demanding. She seemed alright getting wet, she certainly wasn't complaining.
A second shaft of lightning lit up the land, and not too far away a plume of smoke rose before being doused by the rain. Fire! Bombei was up the tree and back down, the young cheetah safely transported in his jaws and then sheltered beneath him. "Don't want you being struck like that." He explained.

"Naw, I think I'll be okay." She giggled lightly as she shook her head, causing a rippling effect throughout her whole body until she was mostly dry. "See? All dry." She said as she bounded around the tree some more.
When the lightning hit, she jumped lightly and let out a soft chirp for help, and suddenly was down from the tree, and underneath the lion she was talking to earlier.
She huddled against his leg in a small ball as she looked back up to him, "Y...yeah.."

Bombei peered around at the cub, smiling at her as she huddled. Unfortunately the position that put him in had him looking upside down at her, so his smile might have seemed a sort of frown. "You can come out if you want...but stay out of the tree, alright?" He shifted a bit to be less hunkered over her. He was probably dripping more on her than the rain had been now.
"Are you alone here?" He asked. He hadn't seen anyone else around, surely no sensible parent would leave a child out in the storm like this. "My name is Bombei...Sorry I pulled you down, I hope I wasn't too rough!" For all his practice telling tales to cubs, he usually had very little contact with them. Sure they'd scramble all over him, tug his ears, but he usually at most would gently nudge them away with a paw. He'd never been a father, so he wasn't sure if he'd been gentle enough with his teeth on her.

She peered out from under the lion and looked up to the sky, "You sure?" she asked as she blinked and turned her gaze back to Bombei. "It still looks kinda bad out there." She slowly crept out from under him, but still stayed close to him.
"Yeah, I'm alone." She said as she started to calm down when the thunder died down. "My parent's left me here a few moons ago." She said, not sure when they were going to come back. "I'm Zari." she said as she licked the water off her nose. "You were alright." she said as she smiled lightly, "You remind me of my dad." she giggled lightly.

Bombei nodded. "Yeah, it's safe on the ground." He couldn't help but feel relief when the cheetah hung near. He'd been afraid the storm mixed with his actions would scare her off, but it wasn't so. He lay down, trying to seem at ease to help calm the cub. She seemed a sweet little thing, and her distress upset him more than usual for some unknown reason.
Ah, so she truly was alone. A shame. He felt his fur ruffle. Couldn't parents take care of their cubs? Or at least left them with someone to help them, and not helpless and alone. "You haven't seen them since, Zari?" He added her name to affirm it in his mind. A cute name, he thought. "I do?" He wasn't sure if that was good or not at first. Hadn't her family left her alone? So then it would be bad to seem like her father. But she seemed happy, and he chuckled. "I'm glad you don't mind me. It's nice to have company." He noted her licking her nose clean, and on a whim reached out with a paw to scoop her closer. He might not be as good at it as a real parent, or even a normal lioness, but he gave a decent bath...All the rain on her must be making her chilly.

She shook her little head. "Nope, I hope nothing happened to them.." she said as she spoke her thoughts out loud, "...they said they'd be right back." her voice was soft when she thought to herself, or at least she thought. It was always a habit of hers. Her father had always say what's on her mind, so she wasn't really good at keeping secrets or keeping things from people.
She looked back up to him and nodded, "Yup!" She grinned, "Just like daddy. I love him so much." She smiled and tried to wriggle away from his large tongue when he started to give her a bath, but soon she didn't mind.

Bombei would have let the cub go if she'd kept wiggling, but soon enough she sat still. Huh, I mustn't be too bad at giving baths then. He listened to her talk of her family with interest. So her parents had gone off somplace, vowing to return, and then had not..."Do you know which way they went?" He knew the area vaguely. Maybe he chould get an idea of what her parents had been heading out to do.
Ah, he felt his heart melt. Such a sweet girl. He noted sho only mentioned her father though. "And what about your mother? Was she nice too?" He remembered his own mother. Vaguely. More a mix of emotions, sounds, and scents than an image in his mind. She and his father were surely long gone now.
Once the cub was clean he loosed his hold on her, so she could move away if she wanted. Still, the storm would keep her under the tree, he assumed.

She shrugged. "I don't know. I was half asleep when they dropped me off." She said, starting to play with his mane when he finished bathing her. "They left in the middle of the night.
She laughed lightly at the mention of her mother. "She was crazy." she laughed again, rolling around. "I never understood why dad stuck with her, but he said he loved her, and hoped she'd change." She shrugged

Bombei was liking this less and less as the cub said more. She had been left alone, had no clue where they'd gone...his heart went out to her for her plight, and he couldn't help but admire how she'd kept cheerful through it all.
He smiled as she played with his mane. Cubs always seemed to enjoy his massive amount of fur. He almost didn't believe what he'd heard...Her mother was crazy? Surely that was part of why her parents had left. He felt himself curl around the cub protectively...why? He wasn't sure, but he'd begun to feel it was his job to protect her from anything else bad happening. "Love can make adults do strange things." Like leave their children behind. "...Zari. Would you want to go with me when I leave here? We can look for your parents if you want, or..."
