User Image Chagrin shook himself to bring back the circulation in his legs and stretched to help even more. With the cold weather his joints had started to become a little stiff, but this was nothing new, nor painful. It was more rather a part of Chagrin's life that he had come to accept. His tan body and leopard spotted rump squeezed out from under the rock in which he lived.

The sun was weak, but still a beautiful sight to behold. The purple scars around his front legs twinged int he cold, but he ignored it. The air was quite chilly and the small breezes that swept over the field even more so. The winter snows would soon be upon him. But inside of him little den there were a few stores of food for when the hunt truly became scarce. The winter seemed to be setting in earlier than he expected and knew it would be a harsh one.

Chagrin made his way into the wood where the temperature seemed to raise a little from the movement of small animals and anything else that seemed to still be venturing out of their homes. He took a moment to gnaw on a dead tree branch and then to the stream for a fresh drink of the waters. There he settled down and relaxed. Maybe he could fish a little, he wasn't very talented at it, but it seemed like fun. Especially on a day like this when the fish were sure to be slow due to the chilly waters. His gold eyes searched the waters for any fish as he sat at the banks edge, the gurgle of the water seeming to be music to his ears.

User ImageTauro, too, contemplated the encroaching winter. She lay on her side on the river bank, her pelt blending into the mud. She panted, having just completed a successful hunt and eaten a hare. The hares, she contemplated ruefully, would turn white with the snow, but she would remain mud-colored. Fine camouflage in the summer, blending in with the trees and the shadows, but a poor disguise when the snow fell.

Her ears pricked as she heard another quadruped approaching; soft-footed and confident, it was most likely another predator, like herself. Her jaw snapped shut and she rolled onto her stomach, her ears pricking forward. It would be wise to remain here, hidden against the mud, until she saw who approached. Now was no time to quarrel with a panther or lynx, or, for that matter, an unfriendly member of her own species.

She finally saw the lone wolf as he paced into view, and she snorted to herself. Why, he's got a spotty bum. He was of no high rank, either, and seemed harmless, at least to her. Tauro relaxed.

Chagrin scented the air, catching the scent of the female just across the waters, and the smell of a fresh kill. He had been so entranced by the beauty of the day that he had let his guard completely down. He scented the air again trying to pinpoint where the female lay; she was across the water due to the way the scent seemed to sway.

"Who is there?" he asked in a gentile voice full of curiosity.

His eyes scanned the river back and caught the sight, just barely, of the female rolled over onto her back. She blended in so perfectly with the ground she he had completely escaped him. It was only because he was searching for her that he could even find her. He let a small chuckle escape him.

"Such a way to hide m'lady. You blend so perfectly with the forest floor that I never would have found you had I just been looking passed. Of course you did escape me." he said, gold eyes shining.

Hopefully this female would indulge him in a small bite on conversation.

Tauro tilted her head to one side, now positive that this male was not at threat. Nor did he seem stupid, like some she'd come across; his light flattery, she shrugged off, barely registering it for what it was. Though blunt was part of her personality, she knew it would be rude to ignore all formalities, and she rose to her feet.

"I was not trying to hide," she said, somewhat stiffly, approaching the water's edge. The stream was narrow enough to jump, but she stayed on her side, not yet knowing if it would be worth the effort. The noise of the cascading water was loud enough that she had to raise her voice. "My name is Tauro," she said, answering his question directly. "What are you called?" She lifted her snout, scenting the air, and stood tall. Around wolves she did not know, she was always ready to defend herself, even when it was obviously not necessary. It took some time before she became relaxed.

Chagrin tilted his head as Tauro rose, and her markings and figure became truly visible to him. She was a very pretty wolf, though to him he though all females had a beauty about then; especially since it was rare that he saw them.

"Oh, well you did a good job of it as it is." he said sneezing out a laugh. "I am known as Chagrin, it is my pleasure to meet you Tauro." he said bowing his head a little to her. He was a true gentleman and was always somewhat formal and polite to those he met, except maybe his prey.

Chagrin licked at the cool water again and looked back up to Tauro sitting at the water's edge. "What brings you out to this side of the wood, do you live nearby?" he asked curiously tilting his head again and wagging his tail a little, lifting the leaves that lay in the circumference of his tail.

Where she lived was something of an awkward question to Tauro, who hadn't had a home since her family had split up. Since then, she had wandered, occassionally with a companion, but more often alone.

"I was... looking for my siblings," she said finally. He seemed polite to a fault, the kind of wolf she might purposefully try to get under the skin of, just to see if she could. One reason was because she often saw manners as a way of hiding what you were really thinking, and if you couldn't say what you were really think, it must be negative, right? His posture, however, spoke of honesty; maybe he was just bred to manners.

"Are these your lands?" she asked, turning the tables on him. "It doesn't smell of a pack."

Chagrin nodded his head, "I see, I too lost my siblings, though I have kept an eye out for my half brother. We were separated long ago, I dare say I have not heard word on whether he has even survived." he said shifting a little uncomfortably. He missed his half brother dearly and hoped of one day finding him again. "But I dare say I wish you luck in finding them, I am sure you will!" he assured her with a toothy grin.

He looked around him them back to Tauro. "No, not these lands here. There is a field just out of the wood that I call my own. I am the only wolf who resides there, but game is fair and I have shelter, so it is my home." he said with a slight sneeze. He was proud of his make-shift territory which he even marked from time to time, but normally other wolves strayed from the area on their own.

She nodded in sympathy. Polite but not mincing; cheerfully upbeat but with little hope of his own. This wolf was more interesting than she had given him credit for earlier. "My sister left when she was a pup," Tauro said softly, in a rare mood for sharing, "though I have heard she lived in a pack around these woods."

"That's strange, a lone wolf that doesn't wander," she said bluntly. Packs had territories, however wide they might be, but wolves with no family rarely settled anywhere. "This is silly, yelling across the water," she continued. She sprang lightly from her bank to the other, landing heavily, splashing the vicinity with muck. She shook her feet as she pranced onto more solid ground.

Chagrin listened intently, he knew there were a few packs in the area and he had made it a point to stay out of their way. One of him against a group would never bode well for him and he much valued his life. He loved to watch the seasons change and watch the stars and moon change, the sun rise and fall. Everyday was a gift in his opinion, why waste his time with attempting to get himself in trouble and risk losing all of that.

"I am sorry to hear that she left so young. But yes, there are a few packs in the area. I have smelled them, but I prefer to keep my distance as I value my life. I had my share of run ins that did not bode well." he said giving a slight lick to the purpled scars around his front paws.

Chagrin sneezed with laughter. "Yes, it is a bit strange isn't it?" he said. Chagrin watched the female leap across the water and splatter much everywhere. A bit of it hit him on the muzzle, he shook his head and rubbed at his maw with his front paws and eventually gave himself a quick dip in the water to be sure that was gone. "Yes, speaking on opposing sides of water does seem quite silly when you think about it. Speaking face to face is much more pleasant in my opinion!" he said sitting up and wagging his tail a little.

“Mm, yes, much more pleasant,” she answered, though she wasn’t watching him anymore. She was getting bored with the conversation, as she often did. She wasn’t very polite. Her family had tolerated that, even cherished her peculiarities, but when she’d had to enter the big, bad world, she’d learned that being rudely blunt wasn’t a friend-winning characteristic. Instead of changing, of course, she’d sloughed off anyone who didn’t like her and made her company with anyone who was willing to stay around. Unfortunately, that company never lasted very long—thus, she found herself longing for her brother and sister again, and a family of her own.

“Do you ever look for your half brother?” she asked. “It seems to me, if you keep in this meadow, you’ll never have any luck finding him at all.”

Chagrin stared down at his paws. He had contemplated going out to look for his half-brother, but had never really made a step towards doing so. He often meant to, but got himself caught up in trying to remember his mysterious past that evaded him. But his brother he would often come back to and then lose him all over again.

"I have considered going to search for him on many of occasions, though I dare say, sadly I have never truly made enough of an effort to do so." he said hanging his head a little. "I do not even know if he would recognize me." he said with a heaved sigh. It had been so long since he had seen Jacobi that he doubted that he would even remember him.

He still remembered his half brother, but still the memories were not exactly vivid to any extent, but rather faded with time.

Tauro turned her head to gaze back at him with caramel eyes. "Sorry," she said, a preface that usually meant she was about to say something offensive, "but you don't exactly look like the type to go around lying about your relations for your own gain. The worst he could do is say he don't want to get to know you; I mean, unless he's got some weird memories you don't, he doesn't even have a reason to hate you." After all, she figured, you can't hate someone you don't even remember knowing.

She ducked, nibbling at some mud that was drying on her foreleg. It came off in a clump. "Though, I suppose I have been looking for my family for years, so even the greatest efforts can be pointless."

Chagrin tilted head head. "No, I would have no point in doing so, and if I remember correctly there is some resemblance between the two of us...if I also remember right his name is Jacobi." he said staring at his paws again, that's what he remembered so he should be right. His memories were faded and worn most of them like old photographs left in the sun but he cherished the ones that he did have. "I shall have to look for him, but with the coming winter months I dare say it may not be the best time for me to travel out when I do have some stored food that I could not bring with me." he said licking at his paws.

Chagrin nodded though. "You will find your family, Tauro, I can feel it." he said nodding his head and looking up at her with his soft golden eyes. "I just know that you will and I wish you only happiness when you do so." he said wagging his tail. He had faith that she would and his heart told him that she would find them.

At his initial recitation of facts, Tauro threw back her head and barked with laughter. "You remember his name how he looks, but you're afraid to go looking?" she asked incredulously. "You're right, you know--you have to look for him, now most of all. Family," she said firmly, "is the most important thing there is."

Jacobi, Jacobi... That sounded familiar, as she ran it through her head, though she couldn't place it. And why get his hopes up?

She grew quiet again at his second statement and the piercing gaze he fixed her with. She looked levelly back, russet meeting gold. Some wolves, she knew, had a sight beyond the physical: one that could gaze ignorant to time or location. His statement, however, rang with the hope of the optimistic, not the knowledge of the gifted. "Thank you," she said. "I hope so, too."
