Shadow sniffed around the trees excitedly, barely staying still long enough for anything to really register. He had finally escaped his parents notice and was out exploring on his own for the first time. He nosed a flower and licked it when he saw it bend. Deciding it wasn't to his liking, he pressed on. It never occured to him that he might get lost or that he would never find his way back, he was too excited for that. When he thought he was far enough away to make noise without his parents noticing, he tried out a howl, which came out as a small and squeaky whistle, unlike his father's strong and melodious tune. He was disapointed but soon lost intrest when he saw a few robins twittering and hopping from branch to branch. He kept his head up, his eyes never leaving them, and followed them, tripping many times.

Nani quivered in a hollowed out tree, ears folded back nervously. Soft, tiny whines emitted from her throat. She was alone now. So alone.... Her parents had been killed, and not kindly either. Torn to shreds right in front of her, along with her three siblings. The only reason she lived was because those dirty creatures that killed her family hadn't noticed her, being the runt of the litter and all.
Nani jumped ciolently as she heard a squeaky noise from somewhere near by, and, panicked, she began trying to dig herself a hole big enough to hide in. She was letting out panicky whines as all she could dig up were roots, and then....
Something stepped on her tail.
This sent her into shock, and a shrill yipe broke out from inbetween her teeth. SHe pulled it in, pressing herself against the end of the hole, heart pounding violently. Something had found her. Something was going to get rid of her. She was done for....

Shadow jumped when he heard a sudden shrill noise and he ran for cover from a nearby tree. After a few moments of silence, he mustered up his courage and padded closer. He was surprised to see it was a small pup, like himself. Female. He puffed up his fur, like he had seen his parents done, to make himself look fearsome. It only made him look like a giant cotton ball but he couldn't see himself and didn't notice. He hoped she didn't notice that he had run away before, especially because she was a girl. Trying to sound brave, he asked, "Who are you?"

Nani was downright terrified. Whatever had stepped on her tail was now looking in at her, and due to to the lighting all she could see ws a silhouette of something much larger than herself. She began to cry, tears streaking down her face. She didn't want to die. Didn't want it to all end her.
"Please...." she hiccuped, shaking so hard the walls seemed to be vibrating, "Ha-have mercy.... I beg of you..... Please don't kill me..... Don't kill me....." she cried out, trying to shield her face with her paws....
When she realized she hadn't been eaten yet, she shakily removed her paws from her face, jaw quivering as she looked up at the other thing with teary crystalline blue eyes, "Y-y-you.... Haven't attacked....?" she whispered to herself, ears folded back. She truly did look pathetic.

He wasn't sure if he felt happy or worried that he looked so fearsome. It was hard to keep himself stiff and pretty soon, his fur lowered again, ruffled a bit. "Y-You're crying?!" he asked, shocked. He flattened his ears and padded back and forth. What would his parents say if they found out he had made a girl cry? "I'm sorr--" he started, but stopped. "Kill you?" he asked. After a while, he said, "Don't worry, I won't." when he realized she really did believe him to be some kind of monster. He nosed her side, hoping she would stop crying soon so that if someone came by they wouldn't see the tears on her face and think it was his fault. Because it wasn't. Right?

Nani fell silent as she watched whatever it was come closer, and her eyes widened when she realized... It was another puppy. He seemed bewildered to see that she was crying. Who wouldn't cry if you were as afraid as her? She jumped a bit when he nosed her, but shortly realized he meant no harm. Sniffling, she moved closer to him, still quivering.
"I-I'm so glad.... I'm so glad you won't kill me..... Not like them.... Not like them....." she pressed right into him, ears folded back as she felt the warmth of his slightly larger body against her. She missed the warmth of others.... Like.....
Her mother....
She let out a whimper and beganto weep again, "P-Please, don't leave me here!!! I-I've been so scared!!! What if they c-c-c-come after me again? What if they do to me what they did to th-them? Mama..... Da......" she sobbed a little louder, leaning in closely to the other pup. So scared. So scared....

"Like 'them'?" he asked, confused. "Like who?" He was surprised when she came closer to him and leaned against him, even. He backed away slowly, not wanting to make her cry again but not used to her prescence, either. He was starting to get nervous, and worried, too. What was she talking about? "I won't leave you," he said, grasping at anything he hoped would make her stop crying and coming closer. "Where are your parents anyways?" he asked, now that she brought it up.

Nani sobbed louder. "M-my parents are dead!!! They were killed, a-and now I'm all alone!!!" she bawled, slumping to the ground. It was hard for a puppy to have so much slam down onto her brain at once, dont you know.
She was shaking. This puppy didn't want to be near her, didn't want to have to be near the girl who was all alone. She would always be alone... "T-they were ripped to pieces... They didn't want to fight, just wanted to ptorect us.... A-and then my brothers were eaten too...... A-and now I'm so alone.... I-I haven't left this hole in four days!!" she cried, eyes sore from all the tears, "They'll definitely come back for me when they're hungry again!"
Nani hiccuped again, hiding her face in her paws. She shouldn't try to get this pup to help her. What if he got hurt too? "I.... I want you to stay, but if you were to get hurt.... Oh, I don't know what I'd do....." she whimpered.

Shadow could only stare, shocked. He had heard about the word death, of course, and it's meaning. He knew that others were sad when one died, but the possiblity of it, the fact that it was actually real, had never occured to him, especially the death of ones family, the ones you've been with your whole life. He padded closer and after a moments thought, laid down next to her, nuzzling her muzzle. "It's alright," he said softly, the way his parents had when he lost his favorite bone to play with. "I'll protect you." he told her, although his paws were trembling at the thought. They didn't sound as sincere, as if they were words he just said to make her feel better. Not wanting to stay too long on the subject of death and misery, he got up and snagged a nearby flower, plopping down in front of her and brushing it's petals across her nose.

Nani quivered, and looked up with wide innocent eyes. He was giong to protect her? She smiled a little, giving a sniffle, "T-thank you.... Oh thank you...." she mumbled. Maybe she wouldn't be alone...? When he got up, she immediately shifted to get ready to stand, not wanting to be deserted, but smiled when he returned, letting out a happy sigh.
Nani let out a little giggle as the flower brushed against her nose, the velvety petals reminding her of her mother's paws whenever she used to wash her face. She sniffed and hiccuped, before giving the boy a gentle head butt. He didn't have to do much to cheer her up, although she was still trembling a little.
"M-my name's Nani..... What's yours?" she asked, her voice as delicate as the tiny flower. She sniffed and as much as she could without bursting into tears again. Her true self was showing now: shy and very submissive, not to mention gentle and caring. She gigged some more as the flower tickled her again, and she held back a little sneeze by trying to paw at the flower.

He smiled, glad that the flower helped make her feel better. He soon forgot the conversation before and continued to tickle her with it, starting to laugh. He headbutted her back, dropping the flower, not wanting to be out-done, and pounced on her before replying with a, "My name's Shadow!" His tail thumped on the ground in playfull challenge and he pawed at her sides. The thought of his parents, siblings, and dangers were completly erased from his mind as their play-fighting wore on. He got off of her after a while and sniffed around frantically, excited. "Want to go explore?" he asked her, wagging his tail.

Nani let out a squeal as she suddenly was toppled over, and let out long cheery squeals and giggles as he pawed at her sides, tickling her into bursts of loud laughter. "Hahaha-stop---I!... Hehehehe----Oooh!!! That tickles!! Stop, stop Shadow!!! Ahaha!" she managed to catch her breath when he pushed off of her, and was still up on her giggle cloud until he spoke again.
She stopped, sitting up carefully. Outside? As in out in the open? Where she could be picked off at any moment? Her ears folded back, but then she remembered what he had said.
He would protect her.
A light smile formed on her pretty little lips as she sat up, tail wagging, "Alright... L-Let's explore then!" as long as she stuck with him, she'd be safe right?

He tilted his head a bit when she stopped and folded her ears back. Would she say no? He wagged his tail when she finally told him she'd come and he said, "Alright." before setting off. He puffed out his tail and walked straight, his legs slightly stiff. He was trying to show off and to top it all, he was attempting to sound intelligent, too, by describing some things they passed by in the forest. What he didn't realize, was that many things he said was wrong, such as the supposed praying mantis that was really a grasshopper and the mushroom cap that he said was a turtle's shell. When they reached a stream, he leaned down and took a sip, feeling proud of himself.

Nani followed closely, tail inbetween her legs as the sun blared down on her eyes. A lot of sun after cowering in a hole for four days. She watched him walk, thinking that he looked a bit like a duck. Did he know he looked funny when he marched around like that?
Nani didn't correct him or anything as shadow began spurring off nonense about different things. While Nani wasn't the bravest pup, she was pretty smart to make up for it. She knew what was what and where it belonged. And apparently this boy had never been by himself in a forest before. She giggled a bit as she looked down at the mushroom cap, her tail swishing over it as she walked.
When they stopped at the stream, Nani moved to stand beside him so they were hip to hip, and leaned down to sip the water aswell. She had to be carefuly not to fall in... She lapped up the water gently, even though she'd been ridiculously thirsty the past few days. Once she felt she'd drank enough and her throat no longer felt dry, she glanced up, licking her muzzle, "Where to next?" she asked, perking her head to the side.

"Um... well, I'm not sure actually." he said, laughing nervously. This was his first time in the forest, after all. His parents usually kept him in the fields, where they could keep watch on him and his siblings better. "Any place you'd like to go?" he asked, hoping she would pick a place he knew. He realized that his parents were probably far away by now but he wasn't worried. Not yet at least. He figured he could just walk back the way he came from, around the tree with the moss, past the brown fungi, and so forth. Plus, he was still intrested in explorning and he flicked his ears, trying to locate an intresting sound.
