Larka stretched as she exited the small den she inhabited. It was a small hollow dug out from beneath a large oak tree, it had once been used y a badger that had long since left it behind. A few days digging had proved to open the space up much more to allow her to stretch out even more and even accomadate another if such happened which she highly doubted. It had been some time since Larka had even spotted another wolf and was beginning to wonder is she was the only one present in this area.

The sun shown brightly, but the air was cold and the wind chilly with the autumn months now upon her. Already animals were starting to gather food and finish off for their hibernation. She had been trying to gather some store in order to keep something welcome to her belly when the hunt truly got nearly impossible as she knew it eventually would once the winter snows came.

Her silvery eyes traced the growing openings in the tree tops where the sun shone through in splotches of light. Truly it was a beautiful sight and it wouldn't be long until the first snow fall. Today was a good day for hunting, if she were lucky, maybe a deer or two would be roaming that she could track for a few days and capture. The day was well good for it, and with the crisp air scents where even easier for her to pick up. Oh how wonderful it was. Her black toes rustled the leaves that littered the forest floor and her gloved legs carried her to the nearby stream where she could satiate her thirst with the ever chilly water.

User ImageHe didn't know where he was going, nor did he know if he would encounter another wolf. He was hungry, irritable, and wanted to sink his teeth into the first thing he saw that wasn't a rabbit. The sun hated him, and he hated it back. It was getting in his eyes, causing him to growl further and duck his head in the shadows of the trees. His stomach growled loudly, echoing slightly before one came from his throat again. "Shut up, stomach," he commanded, knowing it was futile.

He hated winter. He knew it was heading that way, and he didn't like it. He'd yet to find any shelter for it, he hadn't hunted and stocked. But at least he didn't have pups to feed. Stupid brats were just a waste of time, food, and space until they got older. No, Juniper wasn't a happy wolf at all.

As he neared the trees, he spotted a figure up ahead. It was smaller than he was, either a pathetic male, or a female. Either way, another wolf meant there was a good food source near, and possibly even shelter. Would he fight for shelter? Or would there be one near the other wolf. Perhaps he could use this slight wolf to his advantage. Take it hunting, then steal all the food for himself. A nice doe sounded good right now, or even a fawn. That was big enough for him.

Pace not slowing as he neared the other, he figured it was a female. Which would be good. Females were so easy to charm into doing what he wanted. With a smirk on his face, he neared, letting himself be known by snapping twigs purposely.

Larka's head snapped up, her ears perked by the sound of the snapping twigs, the cool water sloshing around her nose had sifted away the scent of the approaching male that now stood across from her. She blinked her silvery eyes are him and licked at her chop which she knew dripped with water, her thick wintering fur bristled a little at his sudden appearance, but he didn't seem to mean any harm; at least not as of yet.

"I did not expect to see another about in this time of the year." she said politely tilting her head. "Especially not a wolf who travels alone it seems." she said looking back behind him and scenting the air, but she could find no traces of other wolves, nor see any, that still didn't mean that there weren't any though. Her creme fur bristled slightly at a small passing breeze that brought a chill to her spine. The markings the male carried were ones she had never seen before in a wolf, those she has also never seen another with anything even similar to her own markings. His eyes seemed to be a complete contrast to the cool coloring of his body, dark and vibrant, they definitely struck her as interesting.

She then shook herself a little to being her senses back, "My name is Larka." she said giving a slight bow of her head. "May I ask yours?" she questioned tilting her head once again. It was a terrible habit she had and she knew it, it made her seem so much like a pup to constantly do that and she was well out of her puppy-hood. This would be her second winter and she knew very well how to survive it and do so well enough on her own.

He arched a brow as she acted like a puppy, and Juniper snorted a little at her actions, but said nothing against them. "Juniper..." he said, trying not to snarl. She was a pretty female, that as for sure, but she wasn't in season that he could smell. A little flirting never hurt anyone, did it? Her markings were striking, and her eyes plain, it caught his attention for some reason. His stupid emotions running against his whole personality.

He moved closer to her and shifted to nose against her jaw, being extremely bold. The red eyed male didn't really care what she thought. His belief is that females were here to be pretty and produce off spring. He had no off spring to speak of, and he wasn't sure he wanted any at this point in time. When he backed away, he arched a brow at her and then slipped to continue his walk. He was hungry for something, but didn't know what. Perhaps it was the thrill of the chase. Maybe he'd tail her for a while, get to know this female, figure her out.

It beat the hell out of looking for Twix to fight with her again. Juniper was half sick of constantly fighting with everything and everyone. Just about ready to give up and settle down into the first pack he stumbled upon.

Juniper... she mulled it over in her mind for a moment, it was a nice name, though she wasn't quite sure if it fit him. But she still didn't exactly know him then did she? His coloration and patterns to her seemed so stunning, she almost felt plain and boring next to him. She shook herself from her internal mind play and brought herself back to the physical world where Juniper stood before him.

When the large male nudge against her jaw she felt an instinctual need to snap at him but withheld the urge. Larka unlike the male had no real views on the roles of male or females, but rather was content with whatever suited each pairing, but she wasn't sure what was for her just yet. She's come across many males, but none had really made her true interest. But Larka turned to watch the male walk passed her.

She felt a little sad to see the male go, she'd sort of hoped for a bit of conversation. She sighed and let her tail go slightly limp and headed back along her way as her stomach gave a small rumble. It was about time she found herself a meal even if it was nothing more than a few mice or a fat hare. He nose went to the ground to scent, something she knew for sure she was good at.

He hadn't gotten far enough away to miss the rumble and he rolled his eyes. A female that didn't know when to eat was a dumb one in his book. Or maybe she as just eating small game. Either way, he growled to himself as he turned and started following her. "Hey. You need to eat. I heard your stomach."

His words weren't kind, but had a harsh tone to them, though he didn't mean it. Not really, anyway. If he hunted with this female, they'd get close and perhaps cuddle in a nice safe place afterward. Juniper loved falling asleep to a warm body pressed against his, it gave him such nice dreams.

He nudged against her again, this time letting their hips nudge. "Come on. Hunt with me." It wasn't exactly a nice request, and one couldn't be to sure if it was even a request.

Larka flinched a little at his remark. It wasn't exactly her fault the small game wasn't the most plentiful here. The larger game was better but it wasn't wise for a single wolf to take on something large. "I'm aware of that..I was just headed to..." but she trailed off as the male approached her again.

Larka stood for a moment shocked at what seemed more like a demand that a request. She didn't really like the tone in his voice, but she'd couldn't really turn down the idea of getting a decent meal, anything was better than more voles. But she followed after Juniper, studying his markings. Her own gloved paws trotting after the much larger male.

"So...what sort of game do you have in mind?" she asked tilting her head trotting a little faster to catch up with the male and look him in the face, her won silver eyes boring into him, trying to figure out the male's rough attitude.

"What else? A buck. Not a doe or a fawn, way to little. But a big buck," he murmured, unphased by her staring. It made him puff up a little more, the staring, because he liked attention like that. Staring was a good sign. When a female stared at a male it meant she was interested in him. That, or just figuring him out. Which is more like what she was doing.

"Stare all you want, hun, but you won't figure me out that quickly." He was a complex creature, Juniper. He'd lived life on the edge, always taunting humans. He'd killed pups in a rage because of his own failure. He wasn't an innocent creature and it showed in everything he did. Juniper lived for fear, and in fear. Most didn't understand how he lived like he did. If they'd ever ask, he'd answer with: "I'm stronger than you are."

It wasn't meant to be an insult, just a fact. Why the hell did this female seem so keen on staring him down like she'd get some kind of rise out of him. If she kept pressing her luck, she'd get a snap around the muzzle as a warning.

"Ah...sounds good to me." she said taking her gaze off the male and falling back just a little behind him. She wasn't going to get anything out of him and as far as she could tell, his ego was a little too big for him. It was awful, on overbearing male with their head floating in a sea of testosterone. But that was a male for her.

Larka was not the most feminine of wolves herself, she liked to rough house and play fight still, and normally she could keep up with a good sized male, but all the same she still held a playful nature about her which made her seem younger than she really way.

She watched his body movement, she didn't know his past, but the way he held himself told a lot about him whether he knew it or not. "Oh I don't need to stare, just taking a good look at who I'm dealing with." she said with a faint shrug.

He shook his head at that and bit back a remark. If she was going to be his hunting partner, better not insult her in anyway. Walking off the beaten path, Juniper headed for the deeper wood, where he knew deer to be hiding. He flicked his tail carefully and sniffed the air, trying to track down a scent if there were one about.

"Nothing yet... We'll keep moving." Spoken like a beta he was. Red eyes blinked a few times before darting to the side, watching for any sign of movement. There could be other wolves about, and he wasn't going to let one have his kill. There would be hell to pay if that happened. His own stomach gave a lurch that told him it was beyond hungry. Running on empty. He'd nearly forgotten about his own stomach when he heard the female's grumble.

Larka's nose scented the air as well, she had to make herself useful and not so much of a ditz to the male in front of her. She could scent the old tracks of the deer, but it was at least a day old, they had been here, but were long gone.

Larka held back a snicker when she heard Juniper's stomach, she wanted to make her own remark similar to the one he had sent her way at hearing her own, but she thought better of it. She had to be a little more grown up mentally than him in some way. "Their scent is old, they were here yesterday, they would have gone closer to running water today and shade with this heat." she said with a shrug, she had studied the movements and ways. She couldn't hunt them, but it helped to know their ways when she got the chance.
PostPosted: Sat May 30, 2009 7:14 am

"Their scent might be old, but there were a few. We'll keep moving until we find where they drink. Then we'll lay in wait for them to return for shade and a drink," Juniper remarked. Expecting his orders to be followed, just like any Beta would. What he wouldn't give to start a pack all of his own. A blood thirsty pack full of strong males.

Those red eyes flashed in her direction, jerking his head for her to follow him, still scenting the air. They could run across fresh tracks by following old ones. He was an experienced hunter, while she seemed not so. "Larka... You're like a bird, you realize? Pretty with looks and words. Are you to prove your worth to me?" It wasn't an insult, it was an inquiry. He wanted to know if she was good at hunting like he didn't think she was.

He could be wrong, of course. Juniper was wrong on a few things, not that he'd admit it. "Come on, pretty song bird. Sing for me," that was teasing, his way of flirting as he stopped to let her catch up. Better to tease than make her angry.

"Sounds like a decent enough plan." she replied continuing to scent the ground and the air herself. Larka was considering joining a pack but she was still unsure of the decision in the end. She needed a pack that was right for her most of all.

Larka followed after Juniper. A bird... she couldn't see how, how in the world was she like a bird? But still she could hunt, she could run and hide and fight, but only if need be. "I can prove my worth." she huffed. She wasn't the most skilled hunter having never worked with another before, but she wasn't bad.

Her silvery eyes narrowed a bit, watching the male. She wasn't used to being teased like this at all. She wasn't sure how to take his words for good or bad. What in the world did he mean by sing for him...she'd never sang before in her life. She remembered hearing a pretty song from a two-legger encampment once, she did not really understand the words at all but they sounded pretty strung together in such a way.
PostPosted: Sat May 30, 2009 8:58 am

He didn't mean she should actually sing, he just meant she should talk a little more. Juniper brushed up against her again and then matched his paw movements to hers, walking beside her. "Have you hunted with someone else? What happens is, I'll take one side, you take the other. We'll take the buck down together. Sound easy? Both clamp onto his throat and wrestle him down. Be careful if he charges, you don't want to get his hooves or his antlers."

Giving advice to a new hunter wasn't considered a bad thing.. but he'd never done it before. So he hoped she understood it. He wasn't going to repeat himself again. Tail flicking a little, he stopped and sniffed around, catching some scent of an animal. "Ah, just a vole..." He grumbled out, sniffing up ahead again, making sure they were following the right scent.

It wasn't to long before the little pond came into view and then he grinned. "Pick a hiding spot..."

Larka shook her head. "No, never, I've been on my own since I was a pup." she said with a sigh. but she listened to Juniper's directions on what to do, it was pretty darn simple sounding to her, but if it worked then all was good. "Sounds really easy, I shouldn't have any problems with that at all." she shrugged. Still the idea of being hit by hooves or antler didn't sound all too fun.

Her nose searched out the vole, her jaws beginning to salivate at the thought of food. She wouldn't have minded the vole but they were out for bigger game...her nose dragged away from the pungent scent of the vole she turned back to the freshened trail of the deer.

The sight of the pond quickened the female pulse, she could smell the deer. She took off to some high grass, silver eyes transfixed on the large male of the group.
