Laika saw Mito's cave and ran toward it excitedly. Of course she had known it was there, but she acted as if this was the greatest surprise of her life. Her daddy's cave! Where she had spent a good deal of her time, and where she knew he was probably sleeping at this time of day.
She had been away for too long, not having seen him since that incident with the angry lion. That had been a sad time, and she had been too busy trying to make herself feel right again that she hadn't dared return to him. She wanted him to recognize her, after all, and she didn't think he would if she was sad. But now she was different, anyway, because she looked different. Oh well, she would have to just go for it and see if he knew who she was.
She had brought a large fish, just in case.
"Daddy!" She barked at the cave entrance, dropping the fish on accident, "are you home? It's me Laika! I just came back from my home and I wanted to see you, but if you're not here I can come back later! But if you are here I brought a fish! Do you know who I am? I'm sorry I've been away!"

Mito had indeed been sleeping. That is, until the smell of fish captured his attention. It stirred him awake long before he heard her calling for him. Blinking, he raised his head, her tiny voice making him smile. “Laika!” He gasped, moving forward and gently bumping his head against hers. It was a gut reaction that took hold of him, the pleasure and surprise of seeing her winning over the slightest sense of composure. Joyous, he started licking her body, just happy to see she was alright and had come back to him.
“You’re so big now!” he said, stepping back to observe the small pink wild dog. “Where have you been? I’ve been so worried about you! Don’t leave me like that! I thought I had lost you.” He was purring, which was rare for him, but he didn’t care. This was his daughter, after all.
He could be happy to see her home at last.
Sitting down, he took a deep breath, watching her. She had indeed gotten bigger, and she looked so much more like a lady. “Tell me what you’ve been up to,” he said happily, swallowing back an urge to cry.

Laika giggled when Mito saw her, her tail beating through the air in a blur of pink and white. She pushed back against him when he bumped her head, stumbling when he moved but not letting it make her skip a beat. She laughed and tried to duck away from him when he licked at her, while at the same time she did her best to lick him. She stood proudly when he told her she had gotten big, wagging her tail still.
"I brought you a fish!" She barked, "a big one! The biggest yet! But that's not what I've been doing. I've been making friends! Though I have been fishing a lot. Have you been fishing? Or making friends? I want you to meet my sisters and brothers!"
If she knew how to, she would purr. Instead, she did what she felt was the next best thing. Using her growl to her advantage, she let out a consistent rumble to match his, her bright eyes telling him that she was purring and not angry at him in any way. She was a dog, after all. It sounded like what he was doing, so it was good enough for her.
"You look sad, daddy," she pointed out, as if he might not be aware of it and would like to do something to fix it, "I didn't mean to make you sad! I can go, if you want me to?"

Mito watched his wild flower child, pleased that she was every bit as happy and care-free as ever before. Even though she had gotten quite big, she was still much smaller than he was, so she still looked like a child in his eyes. This couldn’t be the case, however. They had known each other for a while. No doubt she was reaching adulthood by this time. It wasn’t like he had met her when she was a tiny puppy.
“It is a big fish!” He replied, “making friends? I’m glad to hear it. I bet you must have a lot of them by now! I would love to meet your… brothers and sisters?” He was a little surprised. Was she finding other family members? Maybe she didn’t really think of him as her father after all. Perhaps it was just something she said to everyone.
Disheartening, but he didn’t let it show. It was still nice to see her. Regardless of her thoughts on him, he still saw her as his daughter.
Listening to her make those odd noises, at first he didn’t know what she was doing. Soon, however, he realized his own purring, so her attempt at it made sense. He chuckled, highly amused.
“No no!” Yelped the male, “I didn’t mean to make you think anything like that. I’m not sad. I’m just so happy to see you! It makes me want to cry in a good way.”

"One is a lion like you! But you're bigger than he is. And you're my dad and he's only my brother. But he's nice! And he has a friend who is a leopard. She's nice too! And I met some dogs like me, and Pebble is really fun, and there are a lot of others too! You should meet them. What have you been doing? Not sleeping in here the whole time, that would be sad. I think you should make more friends!"
She wagged her tail and bounced a circle around him, whapping him with her hind appendage as she went. She then pushed against his backside, trying to get him to move toward the entrance of the cave.
"Let's go out right now! I learned a game from my big sister Eusi and she calls me Lai-Lai! I'll show you the game! I'm not very good at it, but it's really really fun. There's a hill around here, right? We need one of those for it, because that's the point. She caught me a rabbit and I was going to bring you some, but I ate it."
Yipping, she bounded around him and disappeared outside, then bounced back in. She grinned at him, impatient. "Come on, I'll show you!"

“Oh, I’ve made some friends too!” Chuckled Mito, “most are just lions, though. I haven’t met a lot of different creatures like you seem to have! I’m happy for you. It’s nice to see that you’ve been out and about and have gotten so many new buddies. I met a couple nice lionesses.” He didn’t feel the need to go into great detail about what he did with those lionesses, however. That was awkward conversation with your daughter. With anyone. He also decided that she didn’t need to know about his snake bite, nor any of the pain he had suffered from it. She was happy.
No point in ruining that by telling her something that worked out in the end anyway.
Feeling her press against him, Mito slowly drew himself to his feet. He smiled, carting his large frame slowly to the entrance of the cave while he watched her bound around talking.
“Oh? A new game, huh. Well. That sounds pretty fun. You show me it, then. I’ll try to play if I can.” His large body wasn’t built for a lot of games, and hearing that they needed a hill to play left him a little on the nervous side of things.
Moving outside, he looked around, spotting a hill not too far away. “Would that hill work?” he asked, indicated it with a raised paw.

"Yes, that hill will work! Come on, I'll show you how!"
It didn't occur to her that this game might not be one Mito was cut out for. In her head, he was the perfect shape for it, and since he was her father she imagined he would want to play with her. It was almost as if he were obligated to do just that, as she showed no hesitance running toward the hill and barking for him to keep up.
"Come on, we have to go to the top first!" She said, running back to him so he could at least hear the last half of her sentence before running off again as the last few words hung in the air. She bounded up the hill, her limitless energy never failing, and waited for him impatiently. Not satisfied, she ran back to him and then back up the hill so many times, she was running in circles by the time he reached the top.
Distracted suddenly by chasing her own tail, she stopped abruptly and looked at him.
"Okay now watch me!" She fell suddenly to the ground, curling her legs beneath her and just dropping straight to the ground. Throwing her head sideways, she sent herself rolling down the hill, laughing as she tumbled over and over. "Come on, Daddy!" she yelled, her voice obscured by the rolls, "come down!"

Mito, not what one would call swift, bounded after Laika, easily slipping behind her as he struggled to keep a fairly decent pace. For all the walking he had been doing of late he discovered he was sill quite out of shape. Maybe sluggish meandering wasn’t the best way to get healthy and lose some pounds.
“All the way to the top?” complained the large animal, though didn’t stop as the path started to incline, working his way slowly up he hill. He had started to walk after not very long, puffed out. Watching Laika run back and forth as though driven by some kind of unlimited fuel supply only made him feel old and out of shape. It was a good thing they were going to play a game- he could use it to rebound from this moment.
Once he finally managed to haul himself to the top, the tuckered animal sat down with a heavy thud, watching her chase her tail until she got herself back on target.
“Laika!” he yelped, springing to his feet again once she started to roll, thinking it had been an accident. She looked like a little pink pebble. Frowning, he heard her command. “Uh… are you sure? Well… alright…”
After mimicking her and rolling down the hill he found he probably didn’t look like much like a pebble as he rolled. More like a massive, mossy boulder. “AHHH!” He wailed, feeling sick almost instantly.
Why had he agreed to do this?
“Get out of the way!” he yelped.

Laika let out a shrill giggle as Mito began to roll down the hill, thinking his moans were that of excitement and fun rather than the sudden urge to throw up. She barked and ran around the base of the hill, waiting for him to reach he was his large frame barreled down the incline. He was much bigger than she was, and watching him roll was the most hilarious thing she had seen in a while.
She loved him for it.
She paused and tensed as he shouted for her to get out of the way, crouching down playfully as if he had just challenged her. She barked at him and leaped gracefully out of his path, scrambling around to catch a look at him as he came to a stop. Laughing wildly, she ran over to him, leaping and landing on him playfully.
"You're really good at this! Look how fast you were going! And you were rolling and rolling and rolling and I couldn't even see you! You were a big ball! It was so fun! Was it fun? I had fun just watching! Are you okay? Your stomach is making weird sounds. Are you hungry?"

Everything was spinning. Everything had stopped, but it was all still spinning at the same moment. That wasn’t normal, and it didn’t make his stomach feel any better than the actual rolling down the hill had. He would have turned green, were he not already a deep green color. Getting up, he found the spinning was only made worse, the churning of his stomach exacerbated too.
Smiling, he tried not to look too close to throwing up when his eyes met Laika’s.
“Yes… it was… fun…” he moaned lowly, stumbling about on his large paws, “I… feel a little dizzy, though. Is it okay if we don’t do that again… ever?” he asked lightly, watching her a moment. She was splitting into two and three Laikas right before his very eyes.
No, there was no holding it back. Turning quickly from her, Mito charged a bush, throwing up into it as though trying to use the leaves as cover. He didn’t think his Laika would like to see vomit. It was rather disgusting and she was always so full of cheer. The two didn’t mix.

Laika bounced up and down on top of her father, his squishy body not in too much danger from her little paws. Even though she was much bigger than she had been, she still was no lion. She leaped off when he stood, tilting her head up at him and blinking at his strange expression. Had he smelled something bad?
"Never?" she said, looking disappointed. She certainly had fun. She was dizzy, but her head was already clearing. It looked like Mito was not as fast at recovering as she was, though. She could almost see his eyes spinning in their sockets, which probably wasn't a good thing.
Was he turned even more green? Maybe she was still dizzy.
"Daddy!" She barked when he turned to vomit, and she withdrew a bit. She was definitely not a fan of being sick, having only done it a couple of times herself. She whimpered, thinking she was entirely to blame, and waited for him to stop before nuzzling his leg. His back leg, because she didn't want to get too close to the smell. "I'm sorry! I didn't mean to make you sick. I'm bad."

Once he had completely emptied the contents of his stomach, Mito moaned lowly, turning his head to look at Laika. He licked his lips, just to clean himself up even though the taste was anything but pleasant. Didn’t want anything hanging off as he looked at his clearly distressed daughter.
“It’s alright,” he assured her, “spinning so fast just made my tummy churn! You’re not bad. You’re good. The best! I’m happy to see you again. I’m just not as young as you are and it wasn’t something I should have done… that’s all. It was my fault.” He smiled warmly, trying to get her to cheer up.
He didn’t think it would take too long. She was too happy a soul to let things upset her for very long.
Which was good.
“Why don’t we go back into the den?” he offered, already turning to head back the way they had come, “you can tell me all about you many adventures and I can get some sleep afterwards. I want to know absolutely everything you’ve been doing, don’t leave anything out, alright?”

Laika grinned and giggled. She was surprised that he had taken so poorly to rolling. It sure was fun to her. And Eusi had managed to do it without rolling. Was he older than she was? Now Laika knew that he was not only larger than a lot of her friends, but older too, so she would have to be extra careful about what she made him do.
"Okay, we'll just find something else for you to play! I'll think really hard on it, and it will work out, no worries!" she laughed and bounced, circling him despite the disaster that had just occurred as a result of spinning, though she was careful to avoid the pile he had made.
"I have lots to tell you!" She said, at his suggestion. She directed her bouncing back toward his den, running into the home faster than Mito could hope to move. She settled down and waited for him, tail wagging furiously. She couldn't wait to tell her dad about all her adventures! And, like he told her, she wasn't going to leave a single detail out. So they were going to be there for a long time.
It was going to be a fun night.
