Ok I have been wondering if anyone here has done a hard drive upgrade on there PS3 and wanted to know if it's really as easy as it looks. Also I wanted to know if there is a limit to how big I can go. All the websites I've read about this always say go as big as 500gb if you can. I was wondering if it can go even as far as 1 TB? I just want to know if 1 TB is a possiblity.
"The PS3 is compatible with just about any 2.5-inch SATA notebook hard disk. Both 5400-RPM and 7200-RPM drives should work fine. The physical size of the hard disk is important because it has to fit the PS3's 2.5-inch drive tray. As far as storage capacity goes, it doesn't make sense to go through the trouble of upgrading unless you go big: We're talking 120GB, 160GB, or even 250GB." - (From a how to page I read)
This is the hard drive I want to buy *read below*
"Seagate 1TB Serial ATA/300 32MB Buffer ST1000340AS-RK Seagate: For Mac,Windows,Linux 7200RPM 32MB BUFFER"
I read on a how to page that using a 7200RPM could over heat the system alot faster rather than using a 5400RPM hard drive? Is that one true or would they be the same?
Edit:
I am going to get a 320GB Internal Hard Drive Seagate Serial ATA.
If anyone else would like to keep talking about these things keep posting. 3nodding

I've looked into it a bit. I'm gonna be upgrading mine before the year's end.
From what I've heard from others is that the 7200 is really pushing it. Some have had some degree of success with it. Some have had issues. I've also heard that the access time between the two isn't even really noticeable. So most say to err on the side of caution and go with the 5400 just to be safe. I'm going with a 320GB HDD at 5400rpm. Also research the drive more too because I've also heard that not all 2.5 SATA's will work even though they fit. Most should, but not all. I haven't looked into specifics yet though. Although Seagate has had a good rep for compatibility in PS3 from what I've seen. And I could be mistaken, but I think I've seen somewhere that the PS3 uses a Seagate HDD stock. I've yet to pop mine out so I can't personally verify that either. This is all just stuff I've heard. Keep doing more research. If I find anything more I'll post.

It may work. You just wanna be careful when making decisions that have an effect on your systems performance. PS3's aint cheap ya know.

ive read that the PS3s have chopped the HDs space at 220GBs i forgot where i read it from, but it was in the comments of a page, and it was more than just 1 person that has reported this.
what you could do tho, to give you more of a solid reassurance of you HD space is to just buy the HD that you want, and buy a external hard cover kit for it, so you can use it about anywhere, but thats just me tho
but i would seriously look to see where the PS3 caps its HD reading ability i dunno, i may be wrong, and they may have updated it, but last that i read before, which was during the summer, this is where the HD cap stood.

I have a HDD laying around that I need to put into my PS3. My problem lies in the backup. I can't seem to figure out how to format my external into FAT32. I'm tempted to buy an external enclose for the HDD back it up that way; put the backup files on my computer and then swap.
If you want to know if a HDD is compatible with the PS3 read the reviews. People will say if they tried it with the PS3 or not.
The type of HDD that the PS3 uses so far only goes up to 320GB. I believe Samsung or someone else made a larger one but that doesn't come cheap.
Another thing to remember is you won't get the full size of the HDD. Depending on who makes it you'll most likely get roughly 20GB under the advertised limit. I know that the advertised HDD space on my laptop was 100GB, and I only got like 85GB. Then when I got the 200GB I got 185GB. But my PS3 has 55GB out of 60GB.
The faster HDD could over heat it, but TBH you would most likely know about it before it got out of control. The fan would be EXTREMELY loud consistently.

I know a few people who use 320's and have no problems. But it does take a good chunk of space right off the top. So the space you can actually use is in the 200's. I've heard that the larger the drive the more is taken. But I've yet to actually verify this. And sailorcancer...for FAT32 formatting pretty much everyone uses Swiss Kinfe http://www.compuapps.com/download/Swissknife/swissknife.htmI believe it lets you make one big partition where as doing it without it makes a bunch of smaller ones and that doesn't work out so well when backing up you PS3 depending on how much you have on there.

Shinra - Formatting? How do you format it? I read some people saying that you should format it before you put it in the PS3. That confuses me. Doesn't the PS3 automatically reformat the hard drive? ninja

You shouldn't need to do anything to the HDD you're installing into the PS3. But if you wanna back up all the data on the system you need to put it on an external. NOW...you don't have too. You could say...just back up you game saves onto something smaller and be fine. System data is all saved outside of the HDD so none of that'll be effected. But if you have movies or whatever. OR...any game updates or PS Store downloads...you'll probably need something bigger. Hence the external HDD. PS3 has a backup utility that'll automatically back up everything to an external connected to the system. Makes it nice and easy. BUT...most externals are NTFS format. PS3 only recognizes FAT32 format. You can do it in Windows, but it'll only Work on drives 32GB or smaller. Anything else...you'll have to use a program like swissknife. Sorry, I'm bad at explaining things. But yeah...there ya go.

YEah...basically the external has to be FAT32. The internal should be fine.
