They don't sparkle, and sugar coat things... They drink human blood, use totally cool guns, and are insane! twisted

What do you guys think?

For one thing Hellsing vampires aren't a bunch of sissy emo ninnies with endless amounts of infantile high school self-pity-party drama.

Sorry, just had to throw that out there. xd

I think that there’s too much teenage drama in the vampire media these days. They add drama, and take from the plot and the vampire action. With all the unnecessary drama, I frankly find it hard to follow and take the story seriously.

Hellsing offers everything that a good story should have. Good plot, good development, drama and action. They complement each other, rather than undermine.

I agree, but let's not forget gore. Hellsing isn't Hellsing without gore. wink

Seriously, though. From what I've read about Twilight's vampire lore, it's not that bad. It's actually quite interesting. However, the way Stephanie Meyer characterizes her vampires is terrible. She makes the vampire even more romantic than Anne Rice did, and that's just ridiculous. She also writes like a dreamy teenager writes in a diary, using adjectives, adverbs, and anything else she can to stretch out her sentences. Finally, her story, though entrancing at times, is far from unique. Her plot hinges heavily on the "forbidden romance" between a human and a vampire and has been done many times before. stare

Kouta Hirano, on the other hand, makes the vampire a monster, as it should be. He takes them back to their beginning. His hero is as violent as any villain you've ever seen. His characters are deep and based more on traditional archetypes than modern stereotypes. His writing skills aren't perfect, but his style is direct. It's very dark and gritty, even when he doesn't want it to be. It doesn't gloss over things with pretty details. He doesn't depend on such pretty details to attract people to his work. Hirano even manages to include his own "forbidden romance" between a human and a vampire, but he does it in a new and unique way that is so subtle that it is almost ambiguous. It's really refreshing. Most importantly, the "forbidden romance" in Hellsing is not integral to its plot. 3nodding

In the end, Hirano wins.

If I ever wrote my own vampire story, I'd try to combine Twilight and Hellsing. I'd make my vampires incredibly beautiful, but also incredibly monstrous, and their appearance, at times, would reflect that. Beauty is lovely, but it's the perversion of beauty that I find appealing. twisted

Here's what Stephanie wrong: She made her vampires sparkle.
She also made up her own crack vampire lore. The vampires in Twilight are only vampires because she sat down and said "Oh yay! I wanna write a romance! =D I'll write a vampire novel! Yaaaaaaaaayyyyyy!!!"

The only thing that makes them vampires is that she said they are. stare

...and finally, you know what you just said about her sentence stretching? She basically raped a thesaurus for that. xp

oh goodness.
aye yai yai.

She even told an interviewer before that she knew almost nothing about vampires except the very basics (suck ur bloddz!11!), but told the interviewer that she will read Bram Stoker's Dracula some day. I really, really hope so, because uggh....seriously. Twilight, the fanbase...and pretty much this article says it all.

To me, Meyer pales in comparison to Anne Rice. at least I could tolerate Rice's works and her fan base.

I can't even believe that there are actual people out there that think Meyer is the best novelist in the world. I can't say she's the best, but she's alright. These people who keep putting her on the pedastal though, have never really read much literature because there are so many better books out there. There was one rabid fangirl who literally SLAPPED someone on the face just because that person voiced out her opinion on disliking Twilight. o.o

Well, the basic definition of a vampire is a creature that must take life from others in order to sustain its own. That's the only thing that remains consistent in legend and literature. I haven't read Stephanie Meyer's books, but, whether I like it or not, it seems to me that her vampires do fit that definition. neutral

The real question is, what's your definition of a vampire and why don't Stephanie Meyer's vampires fit it?

Anne Rice's vampires are, thankfully, much more traditional than Stephanie Meyer's. However, the thing that I like most about Anne Rice is that, even though he has made the vampire ridiculously romantic, she still demonstrates on more than one occassion that the idea of two vampires living together and loving each other for the rest of all eternity is absolutely absurd. Most people may or may not realize this, but "eternity" is much longer than it seems. stare

Well,They're not your traditional vampires if you would like to put it that way.

Um, sorry, it wasn't suppose to be a bash against Twilight (but as I'm reading over it I'm begining to realize that it sounds that way stressed ) and the poll was for a friend I have that wanted to know the results... So sorry about not titling the poll/thread right... sweatdrop

I prefer Hellsing vampires to the vampires plastering the media these days. You know, the sweetheart vampires. I don't get that. Vampires are monsters, unholy demonic beings. Yes, it's scary and it's not romantic unless you're into being killed via bloodloss, but if you're a monster you're a monster, and vampires are monsters.

Then again, dying from blood loss sounds nowhere near as bad as all the deaths those helpless saps are subjected to in those dumb SAW movies

Let's not turn this into a SAW-bashing thread. stare

I've never liked the way bloodsucking has been linked with romance and/or sexual intercourse (unless, of course, it's being compared to the most depraved act of sexual theatre known to man). I don't think there's anything sexual about it. I think it's gruesome (and I like it that way). twisted
