[help] I have a question about transparency.

Is there a way to make something have a... gradient, I guess... of transparency without

1) cutting it into bits, and setting those bits at different transparencies

or

2) taking a lower-transparency eraser to it for roughly half an hour?

Because the first one tends to make it choppy unless you cut it into LOTS of bits, and the second takes forever (and can also result in choppiness if one's not careful).

If you're using Photoshop, layer masks might be your best option.

Click the Add layer mask button on the bottom of your layers panel (grey rectangle with a circle in it). You can then use the gradient tool to add your transparency onto this layer mask, or paint it on with your brush if a gradient is too uniform or doesn't provide the angles you want. Black makes things more transparent, white less transparent.

I imagine there's lots of tutorials on Layer Masks out there if you're unfamiliar with them.
