ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Four or five students from a suburban St. Louis middle school face punishment for their role in what the kids dubbed "Hit a Jew Day" at the school.

The incident happened last week at Parkway West Middle School in Chesterfield. It began with an unofficial "Spirit Week" among sixth-graders - first-year students at the school - that started harmlessly enough with a "Hug a Friend Day." Then there was "High Five Day."

Soon, though, the days moved from friendly to silly to, reportedly, hateful. Next there was "Hit a Tall Person Day" and, finally, "Hit a Jew Day."

In most cases, the Jewish children were touched or slapped lightly on the shoulder, district spokesman Paul Tandy said. But one child was allegedly slapped in the face. All told, fewer than 10 children were hit or touched. The school has about 35 Jewish students.

...

The incident comes at a time of increasing reports of anti-Jewish behavior in the region, Aroesty said. A hate crime is under investigation in another St. Louis suburb, University City, where someone threw eggs at families of Orthodox Jews, she said.

She believes the economic crisis may be spurring anti-Jewish sentiments.

"When economic crisis hits, somebody has to be blamed, and historically, Jews get the brunt of this," Aroesty said.

Why does this always seem to happen, aren't we supposed to be an enlightened nation of smart people? Or is it what I just know that children are inherently cruel and vindictive and schools don't teach them anything useful about the real world.

Bah, the whole thing just pisses me off in general.

That is very sad that at a school somthing like that would accur. I dont go to public school now but one of the reasons why I was pulled out was because people were rude to me sense I was jewish. With my brothers it was not hard to miss sense they wear kippa and tzizt. But my parents took me out when I was in the 4 grade so nothing really bad happend.

Wow. That makes me really proud of my country it really does (in a purely sarcastic way of course). Let's just hope that the intelligence in America rises one day soon because otherwise anyone that doesn't fit the majority's ideals will be in trouble.

Naah, I think it's just kids are immature and have a mob mentality. Really at this point, I blame the school and blame the parents.

Hitting anyone is bad, remember they went after tall people first. This was the mob going "ok, we did those different people, who's next on the list?"

Imagine the holy hell storm if they decided that it was "hit a black person" day. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would have a press conference and demand criminal charges.

Just an after note: the principal suspended the kids, had a school assembly on Anti-Semitism, religious/other discrimination, and the ones involved did their whole tearful apologies.

My concern is more than the actual event- it's how it progressed so quickly to Jews.

Yeah. By TUESDAY there were "hit a tall person" and "hit a Jew" days. Spirit weeks generally begin on Monday, so yeah, inside of one day the hitting idea was out there, and the target had become Jews.

This is one reason I can't stand the thought of Jews who aren't aware of their heritage, traditions, history, and the practices that have been ours for 3800 years. 90% of Jews in the US and Europe don't even know what makes us different, what makes us targets, and why we should remain Jewish in spite of being world society's personal piƱata.

Ironically the melting pot was a symbol of cultural conformity, not diversity.

Now now... that's not PC, especially when such civilized places like England, Massachusetts and California have political lobbies to ban spanking as a form of child discipline and make it a form of child abuse.

However, I do agree with you.

PS : If I wasn't doing an assignment for my magazine on Halloween, I would hand out Candy Cigarettes to children, JUST TO BOTHER THE PARENTS!

oh and to assure that there will be a cop watching my house all night from angry liberal parents who want to torch my car for doing that... I always make sure to buy at least 1 bushel of fresh Macintosh or Braeburn apples and a 50 ct box of double edged razor blades and pay with a check.

Yeah... I play on the fears of society for my own personal amusement sometimes.

(waits for the storm to roll in)

Personally I'm really not fond of Hallowe'en at all.

1. It's a Christian holiday. Hallowe'en = All Hallows' Eve = All Saints Eve = the day before All Saints Day. A Jew doesn't need to celebrate other religions' holidays.

2. It is also a Pagan and Wiccan holiday, Samhain (pronounced SOW-en). Look it up on Wikipedia. A Jew doesn't need to celebrate other religions' holidays.

3. Running around and begging for food from your neighbors isn't something you do if you have enough to eat. If you don't have enough to eat, you shouldn't be asking for candy, you should be asking for a proper meal.

4. Everyone's wearing masks. If a kid goes missing, who knows? "She was dressed as a witch." "He was dressed as a pirate." Oh, great. Well, what did the kidnapper look like? "He looked like Darth Vader." Great, so we've got a kidnapper we can't identify (and thanks to the microphone in his mask, we can't identify his voice positively either), who's taken kids we can't identify. Yeah, um... sorry, Mom and Dad, but you actually set yourself and your kid up for this event.

Divash: you sound like my dad. As far as I know thats why my family has never done Halloween stuff. We don't give out candy either, matter of fact we put up a no tricker-treaters sign every year.
