I ran across a few tutorials online on how to take a sweater apart so that you can reuse the yarn.

I found a wool sweater at Goodwill a few years ago to try this with and ended up making a very nice shawl from the yarn I salvaged.

It's a good idea to read through the tutorials before you go out and buy a sweater because some sweaters are not as good as others for this project.

Yeah, it's called 'ripping'.
I've done it with old knitted sweaters I didn't want anymore.

Yes, it's a fun way to recycle. I need to take pictures of the shawl I made with my recycled yarn sometime soon and post them.

Funky. :3 I never thought about doing that, but with my old abandoned crochet projects I usually take them apart and reuse the yarn.

My sister recently went to Goodwill and came back with 4 or 5 sweaters, and I suppose there was a sale because she only spent $9. She's been working on unraveling them and has a lot of yarn so far but school and life in general has been getting in the way. I'm starting to think that this is really the best way to get yarn, she has a LOT of yarn from the 2 sweaters she's finished dismantling.

It's a great way to buy 100% wool yarn. I could never have afforded enough wool to make my shawl otherwise.
