This was a rare day for the pink ball of pure love. Normally, Laika had energy and happiness to spare, leaping around and soaking up every little bit of joy her day had to offer her. She was normally talkative and adventurous, always seeking new companions and additions to her family.
Except today. Today she was tired and depressed. She was not familiar with either sensation, so they hit her harder than they should have. She felt sluggish, her body heavy and slow to respond. Her head was foggy and her nose did not work. She had a cold. Though, she did not know what it was. She had never been sick before, and none of her conversations with others had ever told her what an illness was.
So she was confused and sad, thinking she was going to be like this forever. Sitting in her small den, a green patch between a rock and a tree, with a small watering hole near by, she sighed and whimpered loudly. She wanted to feel better, she just didn't know how.

Being just as peppy, childish and annoying as always, Jaha stood up from his long bask in the sun as he sucked in a deep breath and let it out in a contented fashion. Today was going to be another great day! With a stretch and a yawn, he looked around sleepily.
He padded forward, not paying attention in the slightest to where he was going. He was going to let his paws do the walking and let the rest of his body enjoy the day. As he looked around, he realized that it was nice and green here. It seemed nice. After staying in the sun so long, he wanted shade, and what do you know? There was a tree nearby.
Eagerly trotting over to the tree, as figure of pink came into view. Forget the shade, there was someone he could meet! Ooh! Maybe she would be his friend! All these thoughts raced through his head as his paws naturally picked up their pace.
Realizing how fast, he was going, he slowed down and walked the rest of the way to the pink wild dog. Panting, he rasped, "Hi, I'm Jaha, what's your name?"

Laika did not see the large lion approach, her eyes shut and her head bowed. Her ears perked forward just before he spoke, and she looked up slowly. Sniffling, she tilted her foggy head and offered him a smile, and a sneeze. Shaking her head, she sniffled again and whimpered.
"Hello!" she said, trying to match his exuberance but failing through the cold she was dealing with, "I'm Laika! I like your big mane! I don't have a mane because I'm a dog and not a lion, but yours is very pretty. Are you from around here? Do you want to sit in the shade? There's some water over there! I'm tired and I don't feel good."
Laika spoke everything that came into her head. She didn't really have a filtering system on the good days, let alone when she was feeling jumbled and weird. She sniffed at him, showing no sign of fear or concern for his motives. The wild dog was not much for learning lessons, and though she was older and supposedly wiser than the last time she had met a strange lion, she treated him just the same as all the others: with eagerness and happiness. It had worked with Mito, after all.
"You have big feet!"

Jaha tilted his head curiously as he heard her attempt to be happy and peppy even though it seemed to cause her much strain. Oh well. She seemed nice enough. And she talked like him! Fast, hyper, but he wasn't sure if she spaced out sometimes. He was so ignorant and didn't understand why most animals weren't like him and apparently, this bright wild dog. Last time he tried to greet a female pink wild dog, she got all angry and tried to attack him! He liked this wild dog better.
He eagerly started up the fast-paced conversation that had no spaces between sentences. "Nice to meet you Laika! I met a pink wild dog before, but she was mean to me. You wouldn't attack me would you? My mane is sort of big and pretty I guess. Thanks! I guess you're right but I think you might look a little funny if you had a big red mane wouldn't you? I actually wander around a lot. The shade is nice. I love water, I might get some a little later. I'm sorry you don't feel good. Are you sick? You seem sick." Jaha drew in a deep breath as he let out his long string of answers in one breath. He tilted his head out of curiosity and concern.
She seemed so nice, why did she have to get sick? As she stuck her nose into his fur, he had a small spasm as he cried, "That tickles!" He examined his crimson paws and realized that they were indeed, large. "Whoa! They are!", he exclaimed as he plastered a look of utter wonder onto his face.

"I'm not mean!" The sniffly wild dog said happily, "I don't know how to attack anything. I was attack once, by a lion! I was hurt pretty bad, but lions aren't all mean so I'm not worried about you attacking me! Just like wild dogs aren't all mean, so I won't try to bite you or anything! I'm not sure I've ever seen a wild dog that looks like a lion, though. Having all that fluffy on my neck would be funny!"
She sneezed and sat down heavily, shaking her head. She wasn't much for manners, not doing anything to divert her sneeze away from this new friend, but she didn't seem aware of the need to. Sighing, she shook her groggy head and then smiled brightly up at him.
"I've never been sick before! I'm not sure I like it, but I guess I can't really do anything about it so that's okay. Just another adventure! One with a nose that doesn't work and my eyes think that I'm sad, but I'm not. You talk like I do! That's good, because most of the time people think I'm talking too fast, but if you can keep up then I don't think that's true, right? We just talk faster than other people."
She laughed, sneezed, and sniffled. Grinning stupidly, she felt her energy restoring itself simply because she now had company to play with, and it was no fun if she didn't make a bit of effort. "I live here! I liked wandering but now I stopped because I'm making a family. Do you want to be in it?! My daddy is a lion! And I have a brother who's a lion too! You can be anything you want, if you want! Do you want to go play?"

"That's good! I'm sorry you got hurt. I talked to a lion once too and he said really mean things, but I thought he was just playing and then he said we should play hide and seek and I never found him. He was pink too so I guess you can guess where I thought you might be mean but I'm really glad your not!", Jaha explained brightly. He liked this wild dog already. She seemed so nice and very much like him.
Jaha merely shook off the sneeze and continued his wild, speed conversation. " I can understand why you wouldn't like being sick. Nobody does. But at least it will go away. People think I talk too fast too and then they get all mad because I get all spacey and don't pay attention to them. And maybe we're just special! Others can't think fast enough to talk as fast as us!"
A grin popped onto his face as he heard her invite him to be her family. "Wow, nobody has ever invited me to be in their family before! I'd love to be in your family. Since you already have a daddy, maybe I should be your brother or uncle! Yay! Let's go play!", Jaha said enthusiastically as he shook his butt in the air playfully.

Laika wagged her tail, sniffling but not really noticing her illness at the moment. She was always happy to make new friends, and she absolutely adored lions. It didn't matter to her that she had a couple of less-than-pleasant memories with lions. Her father was one, and as far as she was concerned, they were the best things on four legs.
"I've never been sick before! I'm glad it goes away! I thought it would last forever, and then I'd be sad. But I feel better talking to you, so maybe you're magic! You can be my uncle and that will make me your niece! I don't have any uncles! Or nieces, but that's okay, you can't be a niece I don't think."
She looked puzzled for a moment, then exploded into excited barking, bouncing around in a circle at the mere mention of play. She found her breath was harder to catch when she was sick, but that didn't keep her from trying to be as energetic as she always was.
"Play! Yes!" And she pounced on him without a second thought.

Jaha was certainly not one to learn from his mistakes, and that is why he was being perfectly innocent with this wild dog. Even though one happened to try and attack him. That didn't matter to him, not even the fact that she was pink just like her, didn't spark the horrible memories of the verbal lashings and fear that coursed through his body when it had occurred.
"Yeah, being sick isn't very good, but if it never went away, I think we all would be sad! Wait, I'm magic? That's awesome. So that makes me 'Jaha, Your Magic Uncle!'. I think your right, I don't think I would do well as a niece.
Hyperly, Laika ended blundering into him, and instinctively, he quickly did a backwards somersault so that now she was on the ground. He was used to this kind of play from messing around with Amai. But she was gone now, and Laika was here. Maybe she could help him not be so upset that his little Amai was gone.
Not even remembering this at the time, he played around with his new little niece. Jaha standing above her, he playfully growled, "I got you now!", with a laugh and rubbed his nose into her belly.

"My magic uncle! That's amazing! I definitely don't have any of those! And I'm glad to have one now! I want to be magic! Do you think it rubs off, like being sick does? Because I think I got sick because someone I was hanging out with was sick. Oh no! I might get you sick! I don't want to do that!"
She was stunned to find herself on the ground, all thoughts of getting her new friend sick completely gone from her mind. She looked up at him with big, amazing sea green eyes, jaw hanging open.
"HOW DID YOU DO THAT" she barked excitedly, wanting to learn it and wanting to learn it right away. She giggled though, when he dove his nose at her, pawing at his face and huffing at him. She scampered away and turned a wide circle, running back at him and trying to dive for his tail.
"I'll get YOU this time!"

"Wow, I learned something new today! Dear diary, today I found out that I am the magic uncle of a pink wild dog!", he stated as if he were actually writing it down. "I wouldn't be surprised if it does. All the good things in life tend to want to share themselves.", for once saying something that was actually mildly profound. "And I don't think wild dogs and lions get the same sicknesses so I think I'll be fine.
He looked deep into those soft, sea green eyes and only saw innocence, purity and eagerness to please. If only the world would be like that, so pure and simple, without those invisible lines that divided the species.
"Well, what you do is--", he started, only to realize now she wasn't trying to learn as much as go after his tail. As she dove, he moved his tail around, but not enough to escape her. Chuckling, he made a high pitched voice to be the tail's. "Ack, help me!", his tail squeaked as it flailed around wildly in her grasp. Suddenly his tail went limp. Jaha made a face of mock horror and said, "You killed it!"

Laika pondered his words for about half a second before deciding he was right. Lions and wild dogs were too different, so she couldn't possibly get him sick. She wagged her tail, furiously barking, until she made herself sneeze. Shaking her head, she all but ignored it, focused on playing.
She laughed when the tail began to speak, and she chased it, swatting at it by raising herself up on to her back paws and bouncing after it. She was so amused, though she was easily puffed out. It depressed her, because she felt fine but her body wasn't allowing her to do all the things she wanted to do.
Blinking, she stared at the tail with large eyes. She killed it? That was sad! She didn't want to kill anything. "But you're magic!" She pointed out fiercely, "you can bring it back, right! It's your tail! I don't want it to be dead!"

Jaha was strongly amused by all this playing and laughter. Is this what a family was like? If it was, he had been missing out all his life! It was so nice to have a family now; Being able to play, mess around, and just pretend. Families seem to have captured the essence of innocence. Wow, he was on a roll of profoundness today!
Jaha laughed as Laika playfully bounded after his tail. Oh, such happiness and purity. And she was so kind to him, even though he had just met her. Most he met were cautious and wary before they could even be friendly. Heck, now he was in her family!
But he stared in surprise as he saw actual sadness and worry bloom from her eyes. He was honestly just playing. He thought she knew that, and that his tail was not dead. But he couldn't just let her think that she had killed something.
With a gentle smile, he said softly, "Of course I can bring it back." He felt terrible! What was supposed to be gentle play, had turned into a lie. He knew he wasn't actually magic, and she did too, right? He figured that she knew that she didn't actually kill his tail, or hurt it in any way. But, wouldn't it sort of ruin it if he just said, 'Well, I was just playing with you, nothing really happened.' Should he pretend that he would bring it back by magic and lie, or ruin her dreams of him being magic?
With a regretful sigh, he turned to her shamefully and muttered, "Well, you never really killed it or even hurt it. I was just playing and I think I went a little too far. I'm so sorry." His eyes were filled with sorrow. Without even realizing it, he had accidentally wove a web of lies, and that was not ok with him. Without any fake magic spells or weird little chant, he made his tail trace her face soothingly.

Laika blinked and watched him. Her eyes stayed focused on the tail, though her ears perked toward him as he spoke. She nodded. She hadn't really believed it was dead, had she? She felt sad, and if she didn't really believe it than she maybe wouldn't have been sad. Frowning, she shook her head. A wild dog her age needed to be more aware of what was real and what was not.
But she didn't really care.
Tail wagging again, she let her tongue lull out the side of her mouth as she eagerly bounced on her her front paws at him. Playing was fun! She could play. She was good at it. But it was getting late, and she was tired. Maybe she would have to part company with her new, magic uncle. That would make her very sad.
"I understand!" Laika said with a nod, "It's no big deal!" She laughed when he brought his tail up, then sneezed when it strayed too near her nose. "I know we were just playing! I just play too much. I'm sorry, too!" She sounded happy and sincere at the same time.

And at that moment, everything was all better. Jaha was quick to forgive anyone, including himself, if others forgave him first. He was so glad all of this worked out. One minute, he was lonely, and the next he was an uncle. Well, I'll be a pink, happy, awesome, wild dog's uncle! He liked the sound of that.
And with that, he returned her kind-hearted smile. That is, until it suddenly turned mischevous. He pinned his ears and resumed his playing by swatting at her ear playfully.
This was surely going to be wonderful. A wonderful life, with a family that truly, deeply and unconditionally loved him. So what if he was a little different, so was she and hopefully the others would be too. A weird little family where nobody would be judged. That is the good life. No, that is the only life.

Laika barked excitedly when he hunched down to play with her again. She shook her head furiously at his swatting, barking a flurry of sounds and spinning in a circle as if to escape. Thoroughly dizzy, she charged at him on wobbly feet. She regained herself soon enough though, crouching like a puppy before leaping at him.
She pounced on his big lion head, catching him in her paws for a moment before slipping off. She had her paws on his nose now, standing on her tip toes. She let her tongue lull out of her mouth, looking straight into his eyes, though he might have to look at her with them crossed to get a clear view of the pink ball of energy. She licked his forehead affectionately before bouncing away, tail wagging dangerously, nearly thwapping him in the face.
She looked up at the sky and frowned. She would have to be going home soon.
"It's almost bed time," she said, conversationally, though he hadn't said anything for her to reply to.
