For starters, I am the assistant drum major of the band
and a junior in high school

the drum major and i are really great friends
and we both are a bit too nice

we try everything to get people to listen up follow directions
but the band just seems to laugh at us all the time

i love band and this has been stressing me out long enough to make me
regret ever being in band

i really dont know how to get the respect i deserve
and get people to start paying attention

help please
how can the drum major get attention and keep it?

here's something my drum majors need to work on as well. i was born in a family who has awesome leadership skills. my mom is the leader (not the manager, just leader) for her work as a phlebotomist and my dad works as a produce manager at sweetbay supermarket (i think it's only in florida). My dad was also a drumline captain 3 years in a row when he was in the high school marching band. One of my drum majors is wwwaaayyy to stern and nobody likes her. the other one never says a word at all and when she does, she's playing around. They need to find a happy medium. I think u might have the same problem as the quiet drum major. You need to gain enough confidence to be able to yell at your band when they get too out of hand, but make sure you don't do it too often. Don't just yell either, make them run or do push ups or something...that might suprise them and they will never do it again. If you do it to much though, it will only worsen your problem, but if you are stern and show that you are not going to take s**t from them, then they will listen to you. Both my mom and dad are respected big time because they did what i told you to do and my flutes and clarinets section leader put me in charge of the flutes because she knows she doesn't have the leadership capability that i do. of course i'm not allowed to go to the officer meetings or anything, but trust me i know what i'm talking about. ugh...my novel is now over lol. never posted a message this long smile

hope this helps wink

Like he said, You're going to have to show them that you're not messing around. That when you practice you are working. Finding out how is difficult. I've been wondering myself how I would gain and keep respect in the band. Haha those little devils 4laugh Some how you have to put in their heads that there is a time for fun and a time for work and on the field time is not for messing around.
