Careful steps through the grasses of his new home had led Tama to a part of the Pridelands he hadn't explored yet. And it was all because of the mouse he'd been chasing and stalking. His ineptitude at being able to catch it was starting to get annoying...but he wasn't one to just give up. Not when he might be a hunter in the future, like his mom.

He stopped. The future...what did lie ahead? He sighed. So much lie ahead, and he had no idea what any of it was. He was certain he would figure it out one day...but for now, he was just a cub who had no clue. And it vexed him as much as the feeling he was still missing something. He flopped down, white paws over his head.

"Ugh..."

The most handsome creature in the savannah (or so he liked to think) surveyed his domain with intense violet eyes, the kind of color only the most lovely and vibrant of flowers possessed. He knew, he'd spent enough time at the watering hole studying the color, comparing it to things around him.

Narcissus had come out here to get away from the incessant prattle of his family, the mind-numbing chatting about so many incredibly stupid and boring things. Really... who cared about who pounced whom? Who cared who got the last scrap of antelope? Certainly not him and listening to it all really got on his nerves. No one ever wanted to talk about him, and wasn't that what was most important?

Flicking his grey-tipped tail, the black cub settled back on his haunches and set to cleaning his paws, working carefully around the paint he'd used to decorate himself and further stand out from his siblings.

Just as his white pelt stuck out like a sore paw, so did the pitch black of another. Tama's blue eyes had caught sight of the black fur, and curiosity won out. After all, nothing harmful in the Pridelands...long as you didn't annoy the wrong lion. He trotted over, calm smile on his muzzle. Perhaps he would make a new friend?

He stopped not far from the other, blinking. Damn. Another cub bigger than him. Everyone seemed to be bigger than him. But there was something...very strange about this one. Not dainty...but...graceful? Maybe?

Leaving off his train of thought, he spoke up. "Hello there!"

Narci blinked at the strange voice, realizing that it was actually addressing him. It took him a moment to decide if he wanted company right now or not, but he realized that it was really a moot point now.

"Hello." He said warily, turning to settle those vibrant eyes on the shining white cub that had joined him. A boy cub like himself, which was probably the saving grace that kept Narci from telling him off right then and there, and going off to be by himself again. Boys he could stand, but females were just too silly and overly talkative.

"I'm Narcissus." He offered, turning where he sat so he could face this new cub.

Tama made a slight bow, more out of politeness than anything. "I'm Tama." The black cub was certainly different from many of the others the white cub had seen. Especially with the fancy markings painted onto him. At least...Tama thought it was paint. Whether they were natural or not didn't really matter...they looked striking on the black cub.

"What brings you to this part of the Pridelands, Narcissus?" If Tama had one downfall, it was his curiosity when it came to others.

The black cub sat still for a minute as he thought over, his head tilted a little.

"Tama... nice to meet you, I suppose." There was something odd about this cub, something almost soothing to the spirit. He didn't normally think things like that, but the pure white coat and pale blue eyes just seemed to bring it out of him. Weird.

"I'm just sitting by myself. I don't like being like the other cubs, rolling around and scuffling in the dirt. It mars my coat with dust and I can't have that." He lifted a paw and flicked it, as though brushing away the dust he mentioned. "I'd rather just sit and enjoy the sun, or look at myself in the reflection off some water." The cub shrugged, rippling the paint on his shoulders before settling again.

"What about you? Why aren't you off... playing?" He said the world like the act was something unclean and undesirable.

"Ah." Tama did understand not wanting to get dirt on his coat. He was rather proud of his white fur...even if he stuck out with it. And he could understand just enjoying the sun. He did it often enough himself. The warmth was often comforting and helped calm him when things were stressful.

He wrinkled his nose a bit. "I uh...tend to get squished. Because I'm smaller than the others my age. About the only game I can play is Tag. And that...gets boring after a while." He smiled sheepishly. "So...I tend to just curl up in the sun, or listen to all the stories and legends, or explore."

Narci's ears flicked a little at the mention of stories. He wasn't much for physical exercise if he didn't need to do it, but stories... he was rather fond of stories, especially ones where a beautiful black lion was the hero.

"Where do you listen to these stories?" He said warily, trying to sneak the information out without Tama getting too curious about it. Maybe he could go and listen to some stories... but if he acted too interested, Tama might want to go with and show him around, and Narci wasn't quite ready to 'make friends' with anyone.

"I've heard a lot of stories, you know, so I like to sort of compare them with new ones I hear..."

Tama just kept smiling. "From the nannies! And there's one that specializes in stories! I can't remember her name right now...but she's nice." The cub didn't know any stories beyond the ones the nannies had told him...but he didn't mind. Certainly, he could learn more as an adult. "And as long as they weren't sleeping, I'm sure you could ask any of the nannies for a story to compare."
PostPosted: Tue Mar 10, 2009 8:13 pm

The dark cub let out a grunt as he listened, one eyebrow raised. That was something to mull over, for sure. Someone who'd give him all the stories he wanted? Stories ranked just under appearance on his list of important things. He loved a good story, even if he didn't like people to know that. Secretly, he liked to make up stories about how beautiful and wonderful he was... but he only ever had himself to tell them to.

Giving Tama another look, he shrugged, turning his face away as though he didn't care. Couldn't seem too eager... "I'll think about that." He said, trying to sound bored. "It takes a special kind of story to live up to my standards... and a special kind of story teller to tell them -right-. A story isn't just words, you know... its a picture, a scene that plays itself out. If you don't do it right, then its not true or real... its just so many lies."

He wasn't sure exactly what he was saying, but it felt right... for the most part.

Tama nodded, in complete agreement. "Of course! If the storyteller doesn't tell the story right, we can't see it or feel it. Which makes all the hard work the original maker of the story get washed away." That thought made him pout. He never liked that thought...Tama didn't like seeing others' work go away like nothing...

"Since you think like that...I bet you'll be a wonderful storyteller when you grow up!"

Narci stared at Tama blankly for a while, blinking slowly, before he snorted and turned his face to the side.

"I never said I wanted to be a storyteller." He scoffed, though he was secretly pleased by the compliment. "Though, you're right, I would be a good one. The best, even!" He boasted. He had to be the best, after wall. He was himself, wasn't he?

"I already know tons of songs and stories. They're all the best kind of stories too, about beautiful lions and how great they are." Okay... so that was laying it on a little thick, but he couldn't really help it. It was kind of in his nature.

"I suppose you don't have such a fine skill, though... what are you good at?" It was a rather poor attempt at curiosity, but when you were so fantastic, it was hard to really care much about others... at least he was trying a little.

Tama blinked. Oops..he'd used the wrong word. "Heh...sorry...Meant to say 'you'd' instead of 'you'll'...I get things mixed up sometimes." At the other cub's enthusiasm, he grinned. "Those are cool stories! Are any about them being heroes? Or helping others?" He liked those sorts of stories too...maybe Narcissus did as well?

Tama thought a moment. "What...I'm good at? Well...I'm quick. And I can run longer than anyone else my age. And Mama Shiri says I'm wise for my age."
PostPosted: Fri May 29, 2009 11:54 am

The dark cub thought for a moment, his brow furrowed. Truly, most of the stories he 'knew' were made up in his own head. So then... why not? He could make them heros if he wanted to, after all.

"Sure, I know a lot of stories about heros! They're popular, aren't they? They save people and everyone loves and admires them and they get all the best of everything... of course I know those stories." He snorted a little, the sound holding an 'OF COURSE' in it somewhere.

The things Tama was good at weren't real... impressive. Who really cared if you could run forever and knew things cubs usually didn't? But he didn't say that. This new friendship was still a tentative thing really. Even the vain young cub sensed that it was too soon to start pushing things.

"Well, that's certainly useful." He said, hoping to sound sincere. "You'll be good at hunting like that, won't you?"

Tama nodded. "I like the saving part best..." He grinned. "Especially when there's lots of daring-do! Like...the long-lost prince rescuing his sister from the jaws of the evil crocodile king!" Apparently, he had a vivid imagination too.

He looked back to Narci with a face full of cheer. "Yup! I'll be a great hunter! Help feed my family and friends!" Once he had friends. He didn't really have any yet...though Narci would be a good one, if he didn't mind.
