A » B
AB: Absolute Buy. A term used in The Exchange. The "AB" price for an item is generally a price higher than the seller expects anybody to pay for the item, or roughly equal to the highest price he/she expects anyone to offer. If "AB" is, for example, 110k, you can simply start a trade with the seller sending them 110k for the item. No need to post or haggle.
Active Item: Currently, the only "Active Item" in existence is Faunzy's Flute, available from the Cash Shop. When an active item is equipped, it gives you, via little "chance games" sent in PMs, chances to win a variety of other items from the Active Item.
Admin: The Gaia Admins are, collectively, like the "bosses" or even "owners" of Gaia. They're responsible for all the big & official things that occur on this site.
Affiliate / Affiliations: Minishops, Quest threads, & Guilds often have "affiliates" or "affiliations". When a thread or guild affiliates with another thread or guild, they "swap banners" [banners being the primary form of advertisement on Gaia]. For example, if, let's say, "Minishop A" decides to become affiliates with "Minishop B", Minishop A will put Minishop B's banner in their thread, & Minishop B will put Minishop A's banner in their thread. The main purpose of affiliations is to draw more attention to your thread or guild via advertisement.
AI: Stands for "Artificial Inflation". This is, quite frankly, a term you could possibly go your whole "Gaia career" without hearing. The term is almost always used by rich vendors, and Artificial Inflation is almost always caused by rich vendors as well. AI is by far the most common way in which the Gaia economy is manipulated. Artificial Inflation occurs when a Gaian [or a "group" of a few Gaians perhaps] buy a large portion of a pretty uncommon item in the marketplace, then put the item up for sale again, but at a much higher price than they bought it for. The person who bought up most of the Marketplace's stash of X item is now in a position where they can greatly raise the price of the item, & succeed in having people pay that price. AI is generally frowned upon on Gaia, & is also a common & illegal way of manipulating the stock market in real life.
Arenas: To quote Gaia’s FAQ: “The Gaia Arena is a place to showcase your artistic talent and gain exposure in the Gaia Community. Originally intended for member-drawn art, the arena now includes an Avatar and a Homes showcase for those who wishing to share their dressing and decorating abilities with the rest of Gaia.” There are three different sections of the arena: The Art Arena, The Avatar Arena, The Home Arena. Submitting something to the arena costs 1,000g . Your submission will be in the arena for one week. Winners can receive anywhere up to 50,000g . Winning in the arenas is all but unheard of, however. Most people don’t submit their avatars, art, etc. into the arena to win, but instead for fun, to get feedback on their submission by many different Gaians, or both.
Avatar: Your Gaian character that you always see at the top of the screen & next to all your posts, that is your "visual representation" on Gaia. Avatars are a huge aspect of Gaia, perhaps the biggest.
Avi: Short for "Avatar".
Avi Art / Avatar Art: Any form of hand-drawing, digitally created drawing, or hand-drawn & digitally edited drawing of a user's avatar. The high demand & respect for Avatar Art prevaliant on Gaia creates an opportunity for every user with artistic talents to earn Gaia gold in exchange for utilizing their talents. Many people love to "collect" Avatar Art -- other people's unique drawings of their avatar -- & often feature Avatar Art in their signature. The high demand for avatar art also is the reason for Avatar Art Minishops, threads created by artists where other's "order" drawings of their avatar's by the shop owner(s) in exchange for a set amount of Gaia gold.
B: Buying. Used in subject headings in the Exchange. For example, " Penguin Slippers" means that the poster is looking to purchase Penguin Slippers, almost definitely for below market price. If you have Penguin Slippers you'd be willing to sell at below market price, you'd reply to this post & offer a price to sell it to them at.
Ban: When a mod desides that you have broken to many rules, they will not alow you to come back, so they will 'block' your username from veiwing the site, or certain forum(s).
Banner: On Gaia, a "banner" refers to a custom made graphic most commonly used to advertise their Mini-shop or guild. Banners are also used in Thread Sets [a collection of customized graphics which are used as "headers" for each post in a thread, most commonly seen in Mini-Shops], people's signatures, & a variety of other places.
BBcode: BBcode stands for "Bulletin Board Code", & is very similiar to HTML. It's the type of Markup Language that Gaia, as well as many other forum-based websites, use. A Markup Language is defined by Wikipedia as: "an artificial language using a set of annotations to text that give instructions regarding the structure of text or how it is to be displayed." BBcode uses primarily brackets containing abbreviations to change how the text, etc. of a post, etc. looks. A basic example of BBcode is "[*b] text here [*/b] without the "*"s. It makes the text inside the brackets in bold.
Begging: One of the biggest "no-nos" on Gaia. "Begging" is posting or PMing asking for gold or items, generally in a "desperate" & obnoxious manner. "Can someone please please please donate gold to me i realy realy want my dream avi n im broke i hate looking like dis help!!!!"... that's a typical example of begging. Don't do it.
Botting: Using software applications called "Bots" to automatically perform structurally simple & repetitive tasks at an incredibly fast rate. On Gaia, Bots would be used in various ways that would earn the user gold without having to do anything themselves. Botting is highly against Gaia's rules, & a very, very bad idea.
Breedables: (See: Pets}
BUMP: Stands for "Bump Up My Post". Forums are arranged so that the threads with the most recent posts appear at the top. In forums that a lot of people visit, people will simply post the word "bump" to get their thread to the top of the forum so it will be noticed.
Bumper: This is a person that bumps threads. Most of the time, they are paid to do it, but in some threads, there is a contest for the bumpers. There are even palces where you can hire or become one.
Button: A small graphic that's almost always about 88 x 31 pixels in size that generally advertises a thread or a guild.

C » DCaptain: A Captain is the name for the owner and person in charge of a guild. A guild's Captain can assign or demote crew, ban guild members and create subforums, stickies etc...
Cash Shop [La Victoire]: A shop that sells items available for purchase using only Gaia Cash. Evolving Items [EIs] are sold here. Items from the cash shop are sold in the marketplace as well.
Charities: Threads run by users in which free gold and/or items are given out. Usually no gold is needed to participate. Find them here
Code: Quite simply, a code. A coder is someone who's an expert when it comes to manipulating BBC and can be hired for things such as layouts. Coding is what is needed for any internet site, weather it be html or what have you.
Commons: Gaia items that can be purchased in any shop with the exception of the cash shop using Gaia Gold. Also available in the marketplace.
Crew: A guild's crew consists of the guild's Captain, the Vice Captain(s), and the mods; in other words, the people who have above member status and below vice/captain, putting them in positions of authority. The crew is responsible for locking threads, deleting/moving posts, accepting/declining join requests, etc...
Donation Item: From 2003 until approx. two years ago, Monthly Collectibles were called "Donation Items". Apparently due to a massive number of complaints from the mom's of kids spending too much money in order to get the items of the month, & since none of it was really about wanting to donate to Gaia, Gaia accomidating these concerns by making an announcement renaming "Donation Items" "Monthly Collectible Items".
Donations: Gifts of gold and/or items to users from others out of kindness.
Downgrading: Trading a Monthly Collectible Envelope for a certain month in exchange for one of the two items in the Monthly Collectible Envelope for that month plus gold. Such transactions are pretty much confined to the Gaia Exchange forum & almost always occur only between incredibly wealthy Gaians.
Dream Avi / Avatar: Commonly shortened to DA, Dream Avatars are mock-avatars that can be made using Tektek and less popularly, Gavsim. These are free to make, and are often used for questing purposes.

ED: Short for "Extended Discussion", referring to the Extended Discussion forum of Gaia. The Extended Discussion forum is intended for involved discussion & debate between all Gaians. Over time, the Extended Discussion forum has vaguely developed its own "subculture", & set of what's considered acceptable & unacceptable.
EI(s): Evolving Item(s) sold in the Cash Shop. Usually update once a week depending on the item.
Emote: Emote is short for "Emotion", in reference to the little smiley face graphics on the left-hand side of the text box you type in whenever you're typing a post or a PM.
Event Items: Items given out by Gaia during special, usually holiday-related events. i.e the Gaia Prom and Rejected Olympics.
Evolving Item(s): See EI(s)
Exchange, the: Forum in which users buy and sell items for prices usually lower than those in the marketplace, or where more rare items [i.e Angelic Halo] can be sold that aren't found in the marketplace.
Exchange Whore/Exchanger: Someone who frequents the Exchange forum as opposed to buying and selling in the marketplace.
to Flame / Flaming / Flamer: "Flaming" someone consists of launching a hostile & often personally insulting verbal attack against another user. Think of it as an "insult" taken to something of an extreme, if you will. [Naturally, "a flamer" is therefore someone who engages in the act of "flaming", & "to flame" is simply the verb form of "flaming".] Flaming is not only frowned upon & against many guild's rules, but Gaia doesn't tolerate it either. Flaming someone can result in consequences ranging from your post simply being deleted to being perminently banned from Gaia.
Forum: A place on the internet within a site in which people can discuss topics with other people. A Forum is separted by topic sections and those are divided by sections called "threads" (You are the one who creates the thread, and see how many people respond to you, or view your opinion). Forums are operated by moderators. Forum moderators are usually offended by the smallest imperfections (they are usually power freaks). In many Forums, you are not allowed to swear or insult people, displaying pictures of naked people or gory/bloody incidents.

G: Short for "gold". 400g means that your gold number is at 400.
Gaian: A member of Gaia. Like citizens of America are called "Americans", "citizens" of Gaia are called Gaians.
Games: Gaia has many of these. There are a lot of different ones, and you get and use different game items for each one
Game Items: Are items you get from either playing the game, towns, or from the Daily Chance. These items can be used to play the gaia games or be sold to other gaians that wish to use or collect them.
GD: Short for "General Discussion" [forum], which is a general, "free-for-all" forum on Gaia, that's over time developed its own unique culture, set of ettiquete & acceptable behavior, etc.
Ghosting: Chances are, this is the only time you'll come across this term on Gaia [meaning that it's very infrequently defined, making the definition provided here all the more important ^^ ]. The reason this term is near-extinct is because it refers to what used to be a common manipulation of a Gaia glitch -- a glitch which was fixed a couple years ago. Back when this glitch was still in existance, however, it enabled Gaia users to make their avatars look like they were wearing a bunch of expensive items that they in fact didn't own. If, for example, your friend owned an Angelic Halo, they could send it to you in a trade, you could equip your avatar with it... then there's some little detail that goes next that I can't remember... but basically you'd then send the Angelic Halo back to your friend, but your avatar would still be shown as wearing it.
Guild: Where many gaians come together to talk and get to know other people based on things they like. There are a lot of different guilds for different things. So if you liked Anime, then you would probably join an Anime guild. The point of a guil is not to get as many people as possible, but to keep the guild alive and active. Also to have everyone in the guild happy and have things run as smoothly as possible.
Haggle: Occurs primarily in the Gaia Exchange. Haggling is the process of negotiating a price. Many if not most posts in the Exchange will say "I haggle" or, less commonly, "I don't haggle". If somebody selling an item is willing to haggle, the person interested in buying the item will generally post an offer to buy it at a notably low price. The seller will then name a higher price. This exchange of the buyer gradually increasing the amount their willing to pay & the seller gradually decreasing the amount their willing to sell for continues until the seller & buyer have aggreed upon a price.
HB: Stands for Highest Bid. This term is used in The Exchange to denote the highest bid that's been offered for an item that someone is selling/auctioning.
Hoarding: When normally, really rich gaians buy as many of one item as they can. It doesn't have to be expensive items, but it can be.

Image Hosting: When you need a site or a person to host an image/picture for you. Hosting is when the person take the picture/image and puts it online so it can be used in other places. Some popular sites to do this is: Imageshack, Geocities, or Photobucket.
irl: Stands for "In Real Life".
K: 1K = 1,000g. In other words, if someone talks about the price of an item being "60K", then the price of the item is 60,000g. It's used as "shorthand" when talking about expensive items, so people can type three less "0"s.
leet / 1337: Leet is a "notoriously nerdy" form of "internet slang" which is extensive enough so that it is, in a way, it's own dialect. Leet has a fairly substantial history, almost definitely having its origins in the elusive & commonly misunderstood "hacker subculture". The following is taken from wikipedia.org : an alphabet used primarily on the Internet, which uses various combinations of ASCII characters to replace Latinate letters. The term is derived from the word "elite", and the usage it describes is a specialized form of symbolic writing. Different dialects of leet are found on different online fora. Example sentence: L337 15 n07 4 c0mm0n 1n73rn37 5p34k 4m0n9 r34l h4x0r English rendering: Leet is not a common internet speak among real hackers.
LMP: Lowest Market Price. The lowest price a specific item is currently being sold for in the Marketplace.
Locked [thread]: When a mod decides that the thread isnt following the rules. They lock it so that no one can post anymore. They also do this, so it 'dies' and it can be later deleted or unlocked.
Lurking: This is also known as Trolling. This happens when you go into a thread or forum and you might not post, but you will stick around for a while and read whats going on.

Main: A person's 'main' refers to a person's main account [the account they use most frequently], as opposed to one of their mule accounts.
Marketplace, the: This is where you come and try to sell or buy pretty much anything. Be aware that the prices change often, and you might just be lucky enough to get the item that you want for cheaper than in the store, or from buying it from another gaian.
MC(s): Short for "Monthly Collectibles" [or "Monthly Collectible items].
Minishops: A "shop" in the form of a thread opened & run by a Gaian [or, occassionally, a few Gaians] in which "customers" pay Gaian gold in exchange for particular creations made for the Gaian by the Minishop's owner. The three most common types of Minishops are Graphic Minishops, Profile Minishops, & Avatar Art Minishops. Graphic Minishops make custom graphics [banners, signatures, thread sets, wishlists, etc.] for a set amount of Gaian gold. Profile shops make custom profiles. Avatar Art minishops offer drawings [either hand-drawn, drawn through a computer program, or both] of a person's avatar in exchange for Gaian gold.
MMO [or MMOG]: Short for "Massively Multiplayer Online Game" is, to quote Wikipedia.org, "... a video game which is capable of supporting hundreds or thousands of players simultaneously. By necessity, they are played on the Internet, and feature at least one persistent world .... MMOGs can enable players to cooperate and compete with each other on a large scale, and sometimes to interact meaningfully with people around the world. They include a variety of gameplay types, representing many video game genres." GaiaOnline.com is not an MMO; however, the game zOMG! on Gaia is one.
MMORPG: Stands for "Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games". This is the most famous type of MMO; Gaia's MMO "zOMG!" is an MMORPG, as well as most of the other MMOs people around Gaia are familiar with [ex. Runescape, Maples Story].
Mod: Short for "Moderator". A Moderator of Gaia is like an Admin, but with less power & with the primary duty of "moderating" certain parts of the website. For example, Mods make sure topics in public forums/subforums are on topic & follow the forum's announced rules & guidelines, & make sure that posts don't violate Gaia's TOS.A markup language is an artificial language using a set of annotations to text that give instructions regarding the structure of text or how it is to be displayed.
MP: Stands for, alternately, Marketplace or Market Price. The Market Price refers to how much a specific item costs in the Marketplace.
Mule: A Mule Account is an additional account created by a user of Gaia. Mule accounts are created for many different reasons, some of the most common of these reasons being a) as a form of "bank account", to assist in resisting the temptation to spend all your gold or items, to allow your gold & items to be distributed throughout more than one account in case one's main account gets hacked or banned, or an account to receieve & hold seperate funds regarding a guild, minishop, etc. b) a way to post "anonymously", without being identified through your main account [Gaia Mods often have mule's for this purpose] c) In order to earn more gold [a second account means daily you get a second "round" of daily chances, etc.]
Newbie / Newb: Traditionally, a "neutral" term for a user who is new to GaiaOnline.
Noob: Traditionally, a term for a user who is new to GaiaOnline. Unlike the term "newbie", calling someone a "noob" [or "n00b"] expresses condescentment & a general disapproval of the way in which the user acts. For example, newbies who lack basic Gaia ettiquite will often be called "noobs".
NPC: Stands for "Non-player Character", typically in a roleplaying game or scenario. On Gaia, "NPC" is seen at the beginning of user names of various "characters" responsible for making announcements, etc. "NPC"s are creations of people who generally have Admin status, & they all have some form of role or place in Gaia's loose story-line & series of events.

Pets / Changing Pets / Breedables: A graphic of a pet, person, or object that is traditionally displayed in your signature. These "Pets" are often a key element in Role-Playing. "Pets" can be purchased in the Breedable/Changing Pets subforum in Gaia's Mini-Shop forum. The majority of the involvement of Breedables on GaiaOnline is also confined to that area of Gaia.
PM: Stands for "Private Message". Sending someone on Gaia a PM is very similiar to sending someone an e-mail.
Poll Whore: A user who will just answer any poll to receive the gold it gives. "Poll Whores" were much more common a few years ago, when Gaia gave out 10g every time somebody answered a poll; the amount of gold you received never decreased no matter how many polls you'd answer per day. As you probably know, such is never the case now.
Post: A single message or entry in a thread in an internet forum, generally as a reply.
Pure: Used most commonly in the Exchange. "Pure" refers to gold only, as opposed to items. If a seller is accepting "pure only", they're only accepting offers of gold, not items. If a seller is accepting "pure and pure + items only", it means they'll also accept offers that include both an amount of gold & an item(s) [& they'll consider the amount of gold the item is worth].
pwned: "pwned" is internet slang for "owned". "Owned" is internet slang for "defieted", as in, if someone "pwned" or "owned' somebody else, it means that they defeated the other person at something, like won a debate or served a very effective & witty insult.
Overseer: The clam-type creature that comes in every person's aquarium by default, that gives out gold or prizes once a day. "Overseer items" are unique items that you can only receive through the aquarium's overseer [however, you can always buy them in the marketplace, of course].
Quest(ing): This is when you save your gold in order to get items that you would like to have.
Questbars: A little icon that you normally get from TekTek. This shows how far along you are on a quest. You put these near the top in your quest thread.
Quest thread: This is where you make a designated thread for your quest. Even if your questing one item, it helps let people see and know what you are questing and how far a long you are and also maybe why you are questing that item. Many chairties prefer to donate to people that have a quest thread, that way they know their gold is going to a good cause.

Regs: Short for regular. When you go to a thread or forum for a while, and be active there, they will think of you as a regular. Some donating threads have you become a regular there before they donate to you.
Reserved: This is when someone will place an item or a spot aside for someone else. That person may have already payed for it, part of it, or maybe won it in a contest.
RP: Short for "Role play".
Roleplay: When two or more people "act-out", through posting in a thread, a story or event. It sometimes is based off of anime or manga, but sometimes it might be other things. It goes for however long the people that are in it want it to go.
S: Selling. Used in subject headings in the Exchange. For example, " Panda Hat, Devil Tail" means that the poster is selling a Panda Hat & a Devil Tail.
Scam: When someone tries to steal your gold from you. They will sometimes make a site, off of gaia, and ask you for your gaia username and password. Sometimes they even claim to be a mod. When you see someone trying to scam people, make sure to report that person, using the 'report scam' icon found normally at the bottom of that page.
Sealeds: Short for "Sealed Envelope".
Sealed Envelope: An item containing Monthly Collectible items. A "Sealed Envelope" refers to a) the letter of the current month & year before the 15th [on the 15th, Sealed Envelopes are able to be opened & the Monthly Collectible items retrievable] & b) any letter from any month that has not been opened.
Sealed Supplier: Really rich Gaians, generally those who are particularly into vending or hoarding, search out "Sealed Suppliers". Sealed Suppliers sell a large amount of the current month's Monthly Collectible items Letter to a Gaian, at a discount price because the Gaian is buying the letters in bulk.
Service: When a person does you a favor, like make you a banner or bump your thread. In most cases, the person charges you gold to do these things.
Sniping: The act of bidding on an item in the marketplace priced way below market price at the last second, & therefore getting the item for cheap due to their luck & speed. This term could also be used to refer to simply spotting an item often accidentally priced incredibly low, & buying it before anyone else can get to it or get the chance to fix the price.
Spam: Trivial, off-topic posts in a forum, generally excessive identical posts.
Sticky: When a thread is important to the topic its under. These may contain rules or updates.
Stretching the Page: When you purposely make a post that is really big, that doesnt need to be big. Like posting a picture, or having a lot of spaces between what you are saying.
Subforum: A way to break down all threads. Each subforum has its own catagory, in which certain things are talked about in it.
Subject: Generally in reference to a thread, the "subject" is the wording in the subject heading. For example, in this thread, "Gaian Dictionary & Terminology Guide" is the subject.

T/O: Taking Offers. You'll see this term used in the exchange, sometimes without the "/" between the "T" & the "O". The seller will generally post this when they're considering selling a [usually] particularly expensive item; if they're "taking offers", generally they know it's possible that nobody will offer a price high enough at which they're satisfied to sell at.
Teh [or "T3h"]: Probably the most common example of "Gaia slang". "Teh" [or "T3h"] equals "The". For reasons unknown, lots of the time on Gaia you'll see "the" typed as "teh", most commonly by people who have been around Gaia for years and years. It's perhaps post commonly seen in usernames.
TekTek: [the website] Refers to tektek.org , by far the best, fullest, & most well & extensively developed website containing numerous tools & resources for Gaia online. A few of the most prominent features TekTek offers is a Dream Avatar creator, an extensive list of every item in existance on Gaia [& information on every item], Questbars, a unique "toolbar" for Gaia that you can download & use on Firefox, & many free, already created profiles available to anybody.
TekTek: [in reference to avatars] A TekTek is an avatar created using tektek.org's "Dream Avatar Simulator". TekTeks aren't only dream avatars, but any avatar designed using said avatar simulator. TekTeks are often heard about in reference to "TekTek contests", in which, in the contest parameters, avatars are simulated for the purpose of creating the most aesthetically pleasing avatar. People also will "TekTek" others for fun [that is, create avatars for another Gaian, often for the purpose of enabling the Gaian to make that TekTek or aspects of the TekTek into their actual Gaia avatar].
Thank You Letter: A name for "Sealed Envelopes" or the "envelopes" that Monthly Collectible items come from.
Thread: A group of postings / messages that are grouped together as responses to a certain topic in an internet forum. For example, in this case, "Gaian Dictionary & Terminology Guide" is the name of this thread.
TOS: Short for "Terms of Service". These are Gaia's official "rules". Violating Gaia's TOS will often get your account banned.
Towns: Is a place on gaia where you can hang out, get certain game items, or get a house.
Trash / Junk: Items that you and/or other gaians dont want. Most of these are game items or items that are worth 1 gold in the Marketplace. These items normally can not be sold back to any store.

Vending: Vending is the act of buying & selling items in the Marketplace in order to make a profit. The foundation of what provides this profit is very similar to the foundation of profiting in the stock market: buying low & selling high.
Vice Captain: Like the "Captain" of a guild could be thought of as the "President" of a guild, the "Vice Captain" could be rightfully thought of as the guild's "Vice President". A Vice Captain's status is lower than that of the Captain, but higher than that of the guild's Mods. Some guild's don't have a Vice Captain, some guild's have one, & some guild's have a number of them. A Vice Captain has almost as much access to power as the Captain does. The only person that the Vice Captain can not ban, promote, demote, or in general exercise control over is the Captain. The Vice Captain also has the ability to transfer the ownership of the guild, so if something happens to the Captain's account [or to the Captain], the Vice Captain can enable the guild to continue opperating by changing the guild's ownership to the Captain's new account, to the Vice Captain's own account, or to a new Captain that's been appointed. Many Vice Captains have been known to abuse the transferring ownership power, however, which is why some Captains refuse to give anyone Vice Captain status, & why all smart guild owners are very careful as to whom they make Vice Captain. A guild's Vice Captain(s) are member(s) of the guild's crew.
zOMG!: This is Gaia's game that it has made. Its a RPG where you get different game items to use along with the game.
