"His eyes met the others, his lips slightly parted in surprise. Contentment settled over him like night's shroud, showing him that there was nothing to fear. His arms slid around the one across from him, leaning forward to meet eager kisses with those of his own..."

Dragon was mesmerized. He was sitting on the love seat in the apartment he and his brother Raizen shared, a romance novel open in his lap, and his reading glasses sitting on the bridge of his nose. It was more of a habit than anything, but he frequently read romance novels when Rai was away at work. ... Out loud. To himself, naturally. And he only did it to get the full impact of the words.
He was alone more often than not these days. Early in the month, Raizen had been put on a different work schedule than he had. It was starting to wear a little thin - being home alone without anything to do. Of course, they had to keep separate at work much of the time. Or else emotions would run too high, and there would be a price to pay that neither of them could currently afford to. After all - brotherly love of the sort they lived was not exactly kosher to the rest of the world. Keeping it hidden was a pain. But it was a lot less painful than the other alternative - living alone. Which brought Dragon back to the present moment, as he looked down at the book and sighed.
Little did he know that he was no entirely alone now. It wasn't like the hospital to let Rai go early, so he wasn't expecting him. He ignored the sound of the door opening - playing it off to himself as his imagination as he continued to read.

"Oh, my darling, my love. Where have you been? It has been a lonely and stressful day without you here in my arms. Only you can take away the pain that being alone brings me. Oh my love, my love. If I were any less of a woman, I would take you into my arms, grab my whip and s-"

“Show you what it means to succumb to pure passion.”

Raizen gently leaned forward, his lips leaning in to graze the crook of Dragon’s neck.

The day had been slower than most. With the recent bout of flu season dwindling, they had little need to overcrowd the hospital shifts as they had. Rai had never been one for idly sitting about, and such had requested leave of his duties to attend other matters.

More personal matters.

He had not been unaware of his brother’s recent mood. The lingering looks, the disappointment whenever Rai sent his assistant to retrieve records from that wing, rather than coming in person. The taboo of their relationship made everyday things seem difficult – but it was a price well paid for such sweet love, albeit forbidden. This night would at least be for them, and Raizen was planning on utilizing the full extent of the time they had together. Well, once Dragon had sated his cheesy romance novel fix. The thought brought him a smile as he pulled away slowly and came around to where his brother could fully see him.

“Good evening, my darling. Doing a bit of light reading?”

Dragon started as his brother walked in and completed the sentence. Of course, it wasn't what was in the book, but still... He yelped as Raizen smooched his throat, and shivered.

"THAT was not nice, Rai. You know what that does to me."

He shut the book he was reading and stood up, glowering at his older brother.

"One might think you were jealous this morning, bro. What was that evil-eye you gave to the night-nurse?"

His expression drew into a smirk, and he set the book down on the cushion, moving over to wrap his arms around Rai, and plant a kiss on his lips. Raizen was older and taller than he was - so he had to sort of look up to do it. But they were only around five years apart. Dragon was twenty-five, and Raizen was thirty. It wasn't much of a difference. They had so many things in common that it didn't really matter. Not the least of which being that they both thought the world of the other.
When the younger doctor pulled back from the kiss, his eyes were half-lidded, and his hands reached up to twine in the black hair of his brother. He sighed.

"So... how was work tonight? They keep you in the E.R. or were you actually allowed to do the job you signed in for?"

Before Rai could answer, he found his lips caught up in his lover. The kiss was not at all unwelcome and returned just as eagerly as it was given. Although passionate radiated from between their meshed lips it was purely tenderness that came through toward the other. They had been apart too long and right now all he wanted was to be with Dragon. Passionate, without being on him like someone with a one-track mind might after being separated so long. No - the kiss was savored, relished until the younger pulled away, leaving Rai kissing the air for a second before he lowered his gaze into those ice blue eyes and smiled warmly at their curious gleam.

"I'm sorry for scaring you, though not for the look at the nurse. She was staring at you like a hungry wolf does a sheep."

Well, at least she'd been looking as such to him. The thought was dismissed as he continued, "Work was work, as usual. I did get to treat someone who came into the E.R. under cardiac arrest but that was as far as I got before things quieted down. There were plenty of staff on hand, so I thought I'd be better off here, with you, my gorgeous..."

The words trailed off for a second as he looked lovingly over Dragon, but then beyond. Adoration turned suddenly into perplexity as his eyes wandered over his brother's brow and towards what appeared to be very much...a tree? Yes, a tree. A tree of the ethereal, floating variety. Raizen blinked twice, trying to dismiss the image. However, it was not to be easily ignored and persisted to exist and float there, just behind his lovers back.

The words he had been meaning to say were lost in his stupor and instead seemed to become "Gorgeous tree?" - much to the difference of his prior musings.

Dragon blinked, and pulled all the way back from Raizen to peer at him curiously. He sat knelt on the love seat, with his arms crossed over the back, and cocked an eyebrow.

"Love, did you just... call me... a tree?"

He couldn't stop a soft laugh, but that wasn't to say he wasn't utterly confused by it. Raizen had just called him a gorgeous tree. That wasn't an everyday occurrence. And he was staring off into the distance like there was something on his mind that he wasn't telling his younger brother. Draco frowned, and looked up at him.

"Rai. Hey. Earth to Raizen? You home, love? RAIZEN!"

Hopefully, raising his voice would get the man's attention. If there was one thing Dragon hated, it was to be ignored.

"C'mon love... what's wrong? You just called me a tree. You can't do that and go quiet, or I'll think something's really wrong with you."

After a few minutes, Rai started and then pointed.

"There's a tree in our LIVING ROOM! Over there! Please tell me you can see it too - or I'm checking myself into the psych-ward this instant!"

And there was one, though it had yet been noticed. The thing being there showed no interest in Raizen but rather in hovering just behind Dragon instead. This in itself was alarming the man more and more each minute. Seriously! How does someone respond to that situation? Their lover being attacked by a floating tree of all things.

Rai was not the one who knew the answer to that question.

He seriously hoped that it was simply his overworked mind, for he was having issue with the idea, and sight, of the ghost tree getting closer.

The young intern spun around quickly, and his eyes went wide. Okay, yeah. Tree. Here. In front of him. Looking for all the world like something out of a haunted dollhouse. He swallowed and froze, completely still. This was... well, he wasn't sure if it was good or bad, honestly. At this point, he really didn't care.

"Rai - there's a tree on me."

And indeed, the tree had floated down to rest on Dragon's fear-frozen arm, which had been flung out to protect himself. It 'sat' there, as unassuming as one might imagine, and didn't move. It was certainly not something Dragon recognized. And it MOST certainly wasn't something that Dragon created. So the question was, what was it? And why did it seem to like the younger man so much. Draco squirmed and squeaked as the tree started floating again. Closer still.

"Raaaaaai......"

Raizen moved forward to place himself between the two, as little space there was. This didn't much seem to deter the phantom foliage. Carefully, he tried to wave it away.

"Shoo! Go away! Or at least have the decency to stop FLOATING. It's very un-tree like."

Did that sort of logic even work on this sort of thing? He doubted it. With a bit more force, he waved at it to go away.

"SHOO! Leave him alone!"

The thing didn't seem to be agitated, despite his efforts and simply retained its prior demeanor of floating placidly towards and around Dragon for the time being.

Dragon whimpered, and rose, moving to the other side of the room. No luck. The floating tree followed him, and settled nicely on his head. Another squeak, as Draco attempted to foil the floating tree again, by quickly sitting down. The tree followed without care, and the 'feel' of it was almost one of placidity. Of peace. Exasperated - as well as a little scared - the younger man gave up, and let the tree do whatever it pleased, gritting his teeth in the process, and bearing it.

"We can just ignore this thing, right?" Dragon asked quietly. "I mean, it will go away? It's just a figment, right?"

But then something caught the intern's attention as he glanced around the room. A swatch of swirling color, just about level with Raizen's head. His eyes went wide, and he emitted yet another squeak, before rubbing his eyes, blinking furiously, and looking again.

"Rai... There's a color-thingy. To your left."

The slender tendrils of near translucent blue-green were not so steadfast as the tree had been. As soon as recognition of being seen registered, it began darting around Raizen at a frequent tandem. To and fro it sped, wrapping itself around life and limb as it readily explored the man's figure - though much be it to his dismay.

Rai squeaked now, though deeper than his lover. At every turn the blur made he twisted and reeled, trying to remove it with hands too slow to capture any substance.

"Get it off, get it off me!" He cried.

The colorful phantom only seemed encouraged at this statement and even went so far as to dart off completely towards Dragon and the tree. It visited only a moment though. The thin waves merely flowed over the image of the tree for a mere blink of the eye before languidly looping about in the air and then suddenly darting off to secure a spot in Raizen's hair where it then came to rest.

This was not at all a comforting sort of thing and Raizen made his thoughts known very vocally, albeit all articulation was lost in his flustered state.

"I never! First a tree and now some THING - that I don't even know what it is because it won't stay still long enough to be looked at - is in our living room and in my hair. My hair of all things! I have a good mind to, to comb you! I swear I will - and..and...OH! Just...argh..."

Quite despite himself, Dragon found himself chuckling, then outright laughing, then doubled over, as he watched his brother try and fend off a bit of color. The tree seemed to agree that this was funny, because it whirled around and around Dragon, attempting to mimic his laughter with motion. The younger man didn't even notice or care now. It seemed as though he'd gotten used to having the tree around very quickly. And not seeming to mind it, either.

"R-R-Raizen!" he stammered, still laughing too hard to speak properly. "That was h-hilarious!"

He was still rolling for now, but soon enough calmed down, and sat up, rubbing his eyes where tears were streaming down them in mirth. He noted that Raizen still had the color bits in his hair, and he still had the tree on his head - now placid again.

"Okay, Rai love. Either we're working WAY too hard... or these things are spirits of a type or creatures of some sort."
PostPosted: Sat Oct 18, 2008 4:39 pm

The laughter diffused the situation effectively. Raizen calmed down and then ventured a helpless smile in spite of himself. There was no denying that seeing a grown man flail around like that had to be pretty silly looking. He even managed a chuckle before glancing up at what had secured itself in his hair.

"Well, either one is entirely possible. We've been working our asses off lately so it wouldn't be too far fetched to say we're both hallucinating...simultaneously...and seeing the same things."

That didn't sound right. He tried again.

"Or it could be some sort of spirit creature duo."

Carefully, he reached up to try a second attempt at touching whatever it was. This time it allowed him to approach and grasped the tips of his fingers as they meshed into its matter. A refreshing sensation emanated from the contact between skin and spirit.

"What do you suppose it is? That one is obviously a tree - but this one is a floating paint smatter?"

The intern offered a shrug, and unconsciously reached up to 'pet' the floating tree. He didn't really touch much of anything - but it seemed to enjoy it, so he kept it up.

"Whatever they are, they don't seem to want to leave us. New pets? Although I've never actually had a spirit as a pet... Eh.... whatever."

He looked at the tree, smiled at it. The branches waved, as if the tree were smiling back.

"At least they don't appear to be hostile? Well - not yet, anyway. That one seems to like your hair, and mine seems to like my shoulder. Something tells me we're not going to get rid of them too easily."
PostPosted: Sat Oct 18, 2008 4:56 pm

"I wouldn't say pets so much as...companions? We don't know whether or not they understand us yet."

Pleasant as his contact with the wisp was, he could think of a better one. Rai slid onto the seat next to his lover and slid his arm around his slender waist. A tug was all that was needed to close the space between him and bring back a sense of comfort to the atmosphere.

"You know...I was planning on treating you out tonight. Do you think too much mass panic would break if we were to take our newfound friends with us? After all...we're working way too hard at this. We deserve a night off."

"Love - Mass panic breaks out whenever we go out anyway. So what should it matter?"

He chuckled, and rested his head on his brother's shoulder. A sigh escaped, and his eyes closed.

"I'd love to go out. With our little friends or not. It doesn't matter to me."

The tree, meanwhile, had crept closer to the colorthing in curiosity. Now, both were nesting comfortably in Raizen's hair. Dragon didn't know this, nor did he care. All he wanted was to spend time with his lover in peace.

"Where do you want to eat?" he asked, pulling back a little, and looking at his lover. "There's a new Italian place just down the road I'd love to try. If you think we can afford it."
