It helps you to learn abilities as well as raise your status (HP, MP, Strength, Speed, etc). You obtain spheres throughout the game and as you level up your sphere grid you're allowed to move certain spaces. You use the spheres you find (that are usable on the grid), and plug them into the abilities you want to learn or the stats you want to increase. Does that help?

And also once you get a few black magic spheres it is a good idea to have yuna learn the strongest spells. She has more magic power than lulu at that point and it saves time when you don't have to switch between from lulu to yuna to heal the party.

The only downside to it is if you go all the way around it the people kind of lose their individuality. I got everyone around it and they all have the max stats its crazy.

The way I look at it. Their individuality only lasts until you beat yunalesca. After that I use some characters more often. I hardly ever use lulu because I was never able to get her celestial weapon powered up all the way so I generally stuck with yuna for casting spells. but hey my strategy just beat the final boss in one turn so who am I to talk.
