Ozymandias. Pa'aziel. Pabael. Pabel. Pachdiel. Pachriel. Padael. Padiel. Paffran. Pagiel...

Edward dearly wanted to slam the book he held in his hands closed, but he hadn't gotten all the way through it yet. Gritting his teeth in frustration, he continued to turn the pages- nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing.

Yefehfiah. Yehemiel. Yehoel. Yesod.

"Nothing," he muttered, delicately shutting the book and returning it to its place on the shelves. There wasn't a word in any book about what he sought, but then, no one had ever known what the Veil was. At this point, he'd give anything for a distraction, but this area of Durem's public library was alarming in how poorly traversed it was. He turned and returned to the fiction section of the stacks, picked up the latest thriller, and sat in one of the comfortable chairs. Maybe soon he'd see someone he knew, he thought, keeping himself looking alertly over the top of the novel.

Zsneil. Zuhair. Zuheyr. Zumech. Zumiel. Zuphalas. Zuriel...

Somewhere, coming closer, was a loft tumble of sound, hurried words, whispered words, words that were too soft to be heard. Following that was a scuffle of sound and the rattling of a bookshelf just a few yards away.

This was strange. Usually there weren't many people in this side of the wing, nonetheless activity like this. The only souls that dared venture this far into the library were quiet respectful people that moved from shelf to shelf like ghosts, unheard and untraceable.

"Pey!" a raised whisper chided pleadingly, "Stop! Not here!"

There was another scuffle and the bookshelf shuddered again.

"Ngh...Stop!"

He tipped his head a little and closed the book, setting it carefully aside on the table as he stood up. The voice was familiar, one he'd definitely heard before... Bassett Ellery? He'd wondered if the man's contracting had gone well in the rare quiet moments, especially since he seemed to have such a voracious demon. "Hello," he called softly, ever mindful that he was in a library and not a barn. "Mr. Ellery?" Somewhat precipitously he stepped around the edge of the section of shelving keeping him removed from the pair.

As Edward rounded the corner, he stumbled upon a very unusual looking sight. Pressed against the book shelf was the young Ellery, interlocked with a demonic looking being who was pinning him there. The young man had his arm extended against the demons face, holding the hungry demon back as the other clacked his hungry teethed jaws. Bassett's other arm was locked between the two, elbowing Pey in the chest so that he couldn't move much further.

Hearing the small greeting, Bassett snapped his head to the side, his face splayed with worry and shock. He hadn't expected any one else to be in this wing of the library! Embarrassed, the Ellery struggled more with his demon and piped a wobbly, "Oh, Edward! Hello! Nnh...!" but his attention was quickly stolen away by Pey as the other renewed the fight. "Stop! Please!"

Pey slathered his lips with his tongue. He was hungry. The damn human hadn't let him get a drink now for an entire DAY and this was almost more than the demon could stand. He was thirsty and he was thirsty NOW and he was going to get his fill NOW, here in the library if need be!

Glancing once at the newcomer without much interest, Pey narrowed his inverted eyes, as if daring him to come closer. This was his human. Or at least...That's how HE interpreted the contract.

"Don't do that here," Edward said flatly. Banshee solidified from the air itself and reached out commandingly to the other man's demon. "These books are quite old. You could soil them, and then Mr. Ellery would be unable to feed you while he worked off the fines he'd have to pay."

Then he turned to Bassett. "Shall we step outside? I imagine the discussion we shall have isn't appropriate for such respectable places." There was a nice park across the street, deserted in case Pey couldn't control himself... He sighed regretfully.

Surprised by the sudden arrival of Edward's Banshee, Pey reluctantly stopped pushing against Bassett and gave a cold glare in return. To Pey, this was quite absurd. He just wanted his drink, that's all, nothing more than that! Now these people had to go and make it into a big deal...Pssh... Pushing Bassett once more into the book shelf, the demon finally lowered his arms and sheathed his wicked teeth within his lips.

"You're lucky, Bassett," Pey piqued to his summoner and he folded his arms against his pale white chest in indignation.

Slinking away, Bassett stumbled towards Edward, looking rather like a child who wanted to hide behind their parent. He glanced back at Pey, gave a gulp and tried to straighten his disheveled clothes, "I apologize for this, Edward" he exhaled, "Erm...Yes, outside. Let's go outside..."

Banshee turned away from Pey in silence while her summoner nodded. "Yes, shall we?" He lent his aid to the other man, helping him straighten the shirt until it hung properly before going anywhere near the populated sections of the library. Not until they were safely across the intersection and seated on a bench in the park (Edward had checked out a copy of the exceedingly rare Philosophie Occultae and tucked it away) did either of them speak.

"What brings you to the library at such an odd hour?" Odd? It was high noon. Yet, Edward thought that Bassett had a day job...

Pey, mocking Banshee behind her back, stuffed his arms around his pale chest in a huff and followed after Bassett, hungrily watching the way Bassett's neck moved, the pulse just below his ear, the twist of his wrists...And Pey couldn't help but make soft growling sounds in his throat. He was hungry, dammit.

Bassett, grateful to be in the company of someone other than his thirsty Pey, was still trying to fix his collar by the time they made it outside. Hearing the other's question, Bassett gave a meek smile and replied, "Chores for the master. He asked me to pick up some books for him," and he pointed to his satchel, "But I thought that since I was there I could pick out a book for myself as well. I had time to spare and I wanted to find something that might help me with Pey, or a book on herbs and medication and healing."

"Certainly there's nothing wrong with that," said Edward, who was quite enamored of books himself. It seemed like the other man was quite transparent- pleasant in appearance and demeanor. He found it difficult to believe that Bassett had ever been a war, but also... hard to doubt. "We should go back, if you'd still like to choose a book. I am perfectly open to lending you one, however?" The stack of books in his grasp shifted from one arm to the other; Pey was practically ignored, though Banshee could still be sensed nearby in case the male demon decided to ignore Edward.

Looking at Edward hopefully, the young soldier nodded his head. He had learned things in war, roots and herbs and whatnot, but that was when he was in another country, another place. The plants here were different and Bassett didn't know much about the plants in his master's garden that he had been ordered to take care of. "It would be so helpful if you could," Bassett said, shifting the books in his own arms. He winced as some of the books grazed against his sensitive throbbing wrists.

Pey, sneering at Bassett behind the soldier's back, began to pick idly at his teeth. He still had some of Bassett's bandages stuck in his teeth. Earlier that morning, Pey was so hungry he couldn't stand it anymore and he bit the sleeping soldier's wrists without permission. The startled youth had woken up with a cry, slugged the demon in the face, thus causing Pey to swallow not only some of Bassett's blood, but his bandages as well.

He set the books aside and pulled a remarkably modern-looking cell phone out of his pocket. While navigating the screens, Edward continued to speak: "Which would you prefer? Herbs or demonology texts? I shall call the same person, regardless, but I should like to know what I'm asking for." It crossed his mind to ask the one he was calling to bring a sample of both- she certainly had access to enough books. He shrugged minimally and looked at Bassett, evidently waiting on an answer.

"Quite rude, Pey," said Banshee, her arms crossed over her chest. The long red nails bit into her dress, tearing new rents in the fabric. Her light-filled gaze was scornful.

"Herbs, preferably," Bassett answered, somewhat abashedly following up with a shy explanation, "I don't want my master to be suspicious. He doesn't know of the Contract." Which was true. For the past several weeks, Bassett had been hiding Pey's traces, covering up his wounds with bandages and long sleeves, sometimes even scarves. It was hard to keep up with it all, but Bassett wasn't too bad of a job with hiding his demon. "Thank you so much for doing this. When I'm done taking notes, I'll be sure to drop off the books at the daemonology shop."

Pey didn't seem bothered by the Banshee and he continued to pick at his teeth and clean his mouth. He gave her a slight glance and narrowed his brows, "What?"

"You know," said Banshee implacably.

Meanwhile, he pressed a button on the phone and listened to the ring. Apparently it was on speaker, because he didn't bring it to his ear. It ran through a ring cycle, than two, then-

"Good evening," said a pleasant woman's voice. "Edward?"

He nodded, though the woman couldn't see. "Please put some books aside for a young man to pick up. On herbs and medicines, mind you."

There was a pause. "I was about to go home."

"Please, Hae-min?" With an aggravated sigh, she hung up. "She'll have them sent to the address in my research book, Mr. Ellery," said Edward. "She's rather obtuse that way."

Bassett looked a little concerned about keeping a woman working a little overtime, but by the way Edward was acting, it wasn't that big of a deal. So Bassett shifted the books in his arms, wiped the concern from his face and put on a grateful smile, "Thank you very much, sir. You have no idea how much that's going to help me keep myself from getting an infection or something. I should heal a lot better now."

Pey furrowed his brow in confusion at the Banshee and he moved a strand of red hair out of his black eyes, "No, I do not know. What?"

"So...What books were you looking at?" Bassett asked Edward.

"You're very welcome." He put the three books side-by-side in front of him. "The Lesser Goetia, The Secret Book of Tuesdays, and a translation of the Great Eastern Sage of Jade Wang-Fo's Scroll of the Obsidian Arts. They're very old demonological texts. Quite valuable; I'm stunned they're lending them out." Carefully he ran a finger down the spine of the Secret Book of Tuesdays. "Banshee, leave Pey be."

She frowned and began to fade from view. "As you desire."
