Some people say the face of the world will change quickly and drastically at some time or another. There are countless movies and television shows about it what the future will be like. It’s…not really like that. Change comes slowly because people can’t handle it any other way. And after a war that lasts for fifty years, all other progress virtually stops in order to end the fighting.
And sometimes there are methods employed that are…less than humane.
Like when people stopped volunteering to join the military. And began evading the draft the government imposed. Canada’s population exploded.
A law was passed shortly after the draft saying any male, United States citizen who attempted to escape the draft by leaving the country would be arrested and put in jail for up to an including three years. Often they were released within six months, a year at most, with their passports suspended and restrictions placed on their movement within the country.
The men released, every one of them, were inexplicably more violent, more aggressive, and inevitably would do something to get arrested again.
A little over two years after the draft was instituted another law was passed forcing prisoners to become soldiers. It was their service to their country, their penance, and once they came back they would be allowed to rejoin society with their records expunged and with new identities.
Several men didn’t come back and the most who did couldn’t handle reintegration into society. They ended up, every single man, in hospitals and mental institutions for the rest of their natural lives.
Their “natural lives” usually ended under a year after they came back.
It wasn’t until three years later, once the accursed war was finally coming to an end, that a tabloid interviewed somebody who worked with the inmates-turned-soldier. The front pages of every tabloid the net day was screaming about government experiments on inmates involving behavior modification. Like most sensationist stories in tabloids, the claims were ignored.
At least, until the story made it to the front page of the New York Times. And the Detroit Free Press. And the Chicago Tribune. Then people began to sit up and pay attention as doctors began to come forward and explain what they had been paid to do.
The men who were arrested for draft dodging, and some inmates who were incarcerated for lighter crimes, had undergone therapy and surgery to change their nature. To make them more aggressive and more obedient. They were supposed to obey orders and work ‘til they were dead or their objective was accomplished.
Unfortunately, most people couldn’t take the drastic changes imposed on their personalities and their brains burned out within a couple of years. And the ones who did manage to keep from completely shutting down and dying, well…they weren’t quite right. And the behavior modification was irreversible. And effort was made to help the men, and some of them were able to function in society for a time, but inevitable they ended up either dead like the others or back in the hospital.
But, of course, nothing is one hundred percent. There are always anomalies…

I really want to see what people can do with that introduction. Call this a free for all... There are only a couple of rules-

-Posts must be literate, written in third person ("Bob looked at the girl" not "I looked at the girl" ), and at least three sentences per post.
-Please submit a profile to me simply so I can keep a character list on the font page.
-If you're going to be gone for an extended period of time, please let the rest of us know!
-I'm okay with supernatural powers and the such to a degree, but keep things kind of realistic. Please? Try to stick with the mental side of things (telepathy, empathy, mild telekinesis). If anybody wants to do anything more drastic, pm me first.
-Obey Gaia rules (no cybering, pg13, etc) and guild rules.
-Have FUN!

Chris sat huddled in the corner of the bus depot, invisible to most. He looked like any other hobo trying to escape the inclement to the casual observer, should they notice him at all. It would take someone more attuned to details to notice the way he watched his surroundings and kept his back to the wall, never letting people get behind him. He didn't have quite the same look of a typical homeless person either- his hair, while longer and a little shaggy, was still clean and his clothing was cleaner and void of holes. He wore no coat, which was odd considering the snow outside, but the chill draft didn't appear to affect him. Nobody cared when the young man stood up and walked over to one of the buses as the people began getting on and slipped in with the last stragglers when the river wasn't looking. He walked to the back of the bus, to the seat next to the toilet that was still unoccupied and just big enough for two people, if they really liked each other, and sat with his back to the window and his knees up to his chin, completely aware of the people moving around him. This was his one chance. Don't look... he pleaded mentally, though to who he didn't know.

((Sorry for the longness! Have fun everybody!))

Kia shuffled down the sidewalk with her head down and her hands jammed into her pockets. Anyone passing by would only have the guts to look up as she was passing so they could get a feel of her expression without being caught looking, none the less she knew people were staring. It must be her dark looking presence mixed with the uneasy happiness in her stride. Kia sighed and glanced up noticing the final person loading onto the bus. Her reaction was a second late as she let out a gasp and ran full speed to catch up to the bus, she just leaped in the doors as they were closing her heel being clipped as she stumbled up the stairs losing her footing and landing loudly in the aisle. She pushed herself to her feet quickly, keeping her hair in her face to avoid meeting the eye of all the spectators as she paid and hurried down the aisle past everyone searching for an empty seat where she could be alone. She found one just before the back and sat quickly heaving a heavy sigh, "Don't look at me." she whispered audibly to herself over and over until she caught her breath that had been frozen in her throat even upon entering the bus. Her eyes finally found the backs of passengers heads as she looked around quietly pausing for a minute or two on a young man diagonal from her in the very back seats. She blinked then internally cursed herself for staring, and dropped her eyes to the floor embarassed. Kia's brows pulled together slightly as she stayed focused on the floor almost giving away her internal struggle. 'He looks familiar . . . No no, you're just being paranoid, it's in no way who you think....is it? Just one more glance...NO NO you can't. It isn't who you think, the end.' Her eyes slowly went back to blank nothing as she just sat back in the seat staring at the ground, as was her goal until her stop close to her bakery came.

Any attention that Chris was afraid he might have drawn to himself was taken by the girl who nearly missed the bus. Strangely, he felt a degree calmer knowing she would be the object of attention. When she sat down he was still watching her and for a heart beat her eyes met his when she looked around. Chris dropped his gaze for a moment, looking back up when he was sure she wasn't looking anymore. He studied her for a second more, wondering why she seemed so familiar, before his gaze shifted and he was staring at the wall in front of him. It wasn't more than ten minuets before he was asleep, his body relaxed and leaning against the window.

Kia's gaze faultered for a second in a moment of weakness. She thought she heard a fumble of fabric, although it could have been anyone it sounded close. She lifted her head and met a calmer looking man in the back seat. He had fallen asleep with his back to the window, 'How could you possibly know this stranger?' She shook her head knowing she was staring in the midst of trying to find an answer. She looked back out the window then gasped and yanked the cord to her right as the bus driver jammed on the breaks as she flew foreword slightly. She stood and looked at a couple angry expressions around her, "S-Sorry." she muttered. Her voice lightly carried the length of the bus gently caressing the ears of everone. A little kid in the middle patted at his mother, "Mommy! mommy! That's the lady that was crying on that news channel! Remember!? She was talking about the government to the interviewer!" Kia sucked in a sharp breath as more people turned to get a look at her face, she jumped and looked around at the staring faces, some glares, and her stomach dropped as she stumbled over herself a little again as she quickly moved up the aisle hopping out of the bus trying to get to her bakery as fast as possible.

[[srry, kinda long]]

Chris jerked awake when the driver slammed on his brakes and he nearly fell off his seat and onto the ground. He shifted so he could look out the window, not really paying attention to the rest of the people on the bus. He planned on getting off once they reached the other part of the city anyways. His focus was brought to the front when he heard the child's exclamation, and he looked the woman over again. I know her, I know I do, he thought. He glanced out the window again, then made up his mind and got to his feet. "I'm getting off too," he called tot he driver as he began to shut the doors, making his way to the front and slipping off to follow the woman. The press of people in the city made him edgy, but it was worth it if he really did know the woman. At lease he wold know something then.

((no worries on longness, gives me more to work with. If the fact that my character's kinda latched onto yours bugs you, give me a shout!))

[[no way, gotta start this somehow! lol]]

Kia shuffled down the street again as fast as she could, She passed through crowds of peopl like a ghost. Swerving from side to side around perple her pace was almost borderline run. Someone bumped into her anyway and something silver fell from her pocket without her notice. She stopped and took a deep breath when she reached her bakery. Resting her head against the cold glass of her door she sighed, her breath fogging the glass slightly. "How can a child notice me!" she exclaimed a little louder than she had meant to. Fumbling through her pockets she froze, "Where's my key?" she asked herself breathlessly as she looked around the ground. "Oh, no."

((Woot!))

"I think you dropped this," Chris said, holding out the key he had picked up from the sidewalk. He didn't look at her face on, instead keeping his gaze shifted to the side a little, watching the people going by them out of the corner of his eye. Don't want to be here...

Kia jumped and looked up at him, "Oh, yes I did drop my key, thanks." she said. She reached up her hand shakily and took the key, their skin came into contact and she pulled back quickly with the key in her hand. She swallowed the dry city air and pushed the key into the lock as it clicked and she opened the door. "Do you want to come in, I find myself.....somehow knowing who you are."

Chris nodded and followed the woman into her bakery, which smelled completely amazing. "What's your name?" he asked quietly, watching the woman as she moved around, getting things ready. He sat cross legged on the floor under the window.

Kia was sweeping around the place, she moved chairs down from the small tables. The bakery was tiny, but big enough for people who wished to sit and eat. She paused and looked over at the man, "My name is Kia Anderson....what's yours? And would you like anything? It's all fresh, and I like to give some of it away before the day really starts." A rather homeless man appeared at the door knocking. "Kia stopped again looking at the door, "Oh sorry, one second." she said motioning for the man to come indoors. "Hey Artie! Come over here I've got something for you." she walked into the back and came out with a big basket that had a big loaf of bread and little cakes in it. She went to the freezer grabbing some glasses of some kind of juice laying them in the basket. "Okay Artie, this there is enough for you and the children when they wake up, be sure to bring them by later for a proper dinner." smiled Kia as Artie grinned reapeating his thnks and leaving again. Kia smiled at the door after the man left then looked back at the guy sitting on her floor, "sorry about the interruption.....you were saying?"

"My name is Chris," he said, leaning over to see Kia handing a man a basket of bread. "Who was that?" he asked. "Your boyfriend?"
