Xylia's mood was plummeting quite quickly, she was even being snappish with the river dwelling otter who lived near her den. She sighed and smoothed her fur with an dampened paw and gazed into the water. Her mood was becoming soured by her lack of companionship, or perhaps her temper was supposed to be bad. Yet she managed to get along rather nicely most of the time.
She stroked the crimson patch on her forehead and gave a slight smile, yes she had gotten along quite nicely with Cornelius. She remembered the golden patch on his head, they matched in many ways, yet in others how very different they were.
She sighed and sprawled beside the river in quiet contemplation.

Cornelius was out for a swim near the river bank, taking a break from patroling, having been more weary then before. Ever since he heard about the string of attacks on other otters, he had uped his tiem of patrols to make sure there were no attacks on Mistress Ching or anyone else in her territory.
He surface and blew some water from his nose, rolling to float on his back then and closing his eyes so he could at least relax. These attacks had him see that he really wasn't a monster, not like he thought he was. He never attacked others without good reason and he never stole.

Xylia opened an eye as she heard something further down river, a light splash as if someone had surfaced. She stood and shook off the sun had seeped into her fur and warmed her to the core. She gave a stretch and yawned before walking alongside the river to investigate.
Nothing caught her eye until she spotted ahead a black floating shape, an otter! Uncertain if she was in any mood to meet anyone she turned away, but from the corner of her eye she spotted a flash of horns and gold.
"Cornelius!" She grinned and splashed into the river happy to see his familiar form and face.

Cornelius blinked his eyes open when he heard his name being called and he rolled to float propely and he looked to see who was yelling for him. A small smile went on his face when he saw it was Xylia and he swam his way over to her.

Xylia grinned and swam over to him bumping his cheek with her nose and splashing lightly. "I must have good luck today to have you brought to me by river."
She swam in lazy circles around him "What brings you so far upriver? Don't you live in the territory east of here?"

He purred lightly when she bumped her nose against his cheek and his smiled grew just a little and he floated there, watching her swim around him, "Yes, I do, but I needed some time away. Things seem to be...getting out of control as of late." he said.

"Out of control? How so?" She swam closer to him brushing her paws against his side and slowly urging him to the shore.
"Come sit down and lets dry off and we can talk? Maybe have lunch?" She wasn't sure if she could manage to find clams near here, normally they were somewhere around mid-river not quite so far up here nor so down near the swamps.

"Hmmm, lunch....I think I can get us a fish." he said and he let her go to shore and he dived down into the water. A few minutes later, he came back up with a large fish clutched in his jaws, snapping at its neck to stop it from wriggling around. He then swam to shore, dragging the fish with him.

Xylia shook off on shore and let out a snort as her fur puffed back out in jagged spikes. She doubted it would ever be the sleek and beautiful affair that other females managed. She slicked it back again as best as she could and perked up as she spotted Cornelius coming out of the water with a large fish. His nose twitched and she grinned "Quite the expert fishermen arn't we?"
She smiled as she sprawled and waited for him to get comfortable. "Now then what seems to be out of control?"

He set the fish down so she could start eating first if she wanted to and he sighed, laying himself down, letting the water slip off his fur, "Well, I haven't seen too many predators as of late and those I do see mostly just keep to themselves and hunt when they need to. But lately, it seems that otters have been attacking other otters. And pups are being stolen from their mothers or just being attacked for their blood." he said growling.

She frowned as he spoke and nibbled at the fish lightly wondering why the predators were so calm while the otters were getting hostile. Her eyes widened at the news of pups being taken from their mothers.
"That's terrible...all over the oasis? Things up here have been so quiet..." She shook her head.

"Perhaps you are lucky....but I don't like the thought of you down here by yourself, these....vampire otters seem to target those that are alone." he said, "I would....feel better if you were close to me." he said, trying not to think about the implications of that.

"I've always been able to take care of myself..." She murmured softly at first, but her eyes flashed with pain. She had been unable to save her entire clan when the moment had called for it.
She looked at him startled "Vampire Otters?" She tilted her head her eyes filled with confusion. Heat stole it's way up into her cheeks and across the delicate bridge of her nose as she thought of being close to Cornelius. That might be even more dangerous then vampire otters, not physical danger...but emotional for sure. She hadn't allowed herself to be close to anyone since coming to reserve, but she was fond of Cornelius and her neighbor Ariel.
"So it's vampire otters? The demonics aren't affected? Your niece is alright?"

"My niece is a vampire....but she is not like them, this much I know. She won't turn out like them, she won't attack others for her own pleasure, not like how my family has been attacked." he said, frowning to himself and digging his claws into the grass.

Xylia edged closer and gave Cornelius a reassuring nuzzle. "I'm sure your niece will be fine." She placed her paw lightly beside his.
"What happened then? Tell me what kind of attack happened?" She frowned slightly and looked around for a moment feeling nervous. She shook her head at her foolishness and turned back to Cornelius, he wouldn't let anything hurt her.
