Air hissed slowly out of clenched teeth as Abacus leaned forward, grasping the toe of his boot with one hand before shifting ever so slightly, clamping his other hand around the other side. He held his position, forcing his muscles to relax. He always saved this part of his warm-up until last, waiting until his muscles had warmed up enough to prevent cramping. He managed to ruin his planned work-out by straining too far and cramping a muscle the last time.
When he judged that he had held it long enough, Abacus released and repeated the motion with his other leg, leaning forward carefully to work out his back muscles. Ah, that was it! Feeling accomplished and proud of his lack of injury, Abacus stood up and raised his arms over his head, considering. What moves should he practice first?

Khamsyn had studied in his room and in the library long enough for one day. He needed to get out, stretch his legs and perhaps even practice the physical end of the learning spectrum. After all, he didn't want Kallisto's tutoring of him to be a complete waste of time. Especially since he continued his education with that manual from the library. One of these days he'd find someone to exercise those skills on. That prospect made him a bit nervous, but he knew it had to occur some day. Dueling and sparring were a part of Empyrean life and even if you weren't dreaming of being a Grigori, they were mock situations that could help in the real time situations against the outsiders.
As he entered into the arena, a towel draped over one shoulder, he noticed he wasn't alone. Well, usually there were others here, but not anyone he recognized. This time however, he saw a familiar face from classes. Abacus, the chap with the camera. Approaching, he waved to the other Zero with a smile. "Hello there. Just starting a workout or ending one?" he asked in a bout of socialness.

As he flexed his arms, a flicker of moment caught his attention. He looked up and returned the wave, thinking quickly. I've seen him in class, and I know he was at the sushi party... Khamsyn, I think his name was? Unless that's a nick-name Belwen called him then, Abacus grinned and shook his head. "I just finished my warm-up, not yet started a workout. Are you looking to practice any of you moves? Shadow-boxing doesn't cut it when you've got a partner to experiment with."

A bit of a chill ran down Khamsyn's spine. He'd just been thinking that eventually he'd have to square off against a real person, and now Abacus was suggesting just that. He swallowed with a little bit of difficulty and nodded. "Aside from my tutoring session with Kallisto, I've never sparred with anyone. I suppose today is as good a day as any to break new ground." The smile on his face was a bit forced but he tried to relax, knowing that there was no real danger in a sparring match or duel. Besides, it could be fun and like Abacus said, shadow-boxing just doesn't cut it when you have a real person to test your skills against. "I'm game if you are."

"Ooh, Kallisto huh?" Abacus rubbed his arms as if chilled, then shot the other journeyman a grin. "She's the one that tutored me, too. I've challenged her twice... I've yet to score a win against her, though. Have you seen her roundhouse-kick in action yet?"
He tilted his head to one side, considering the situation. He was more advanced than Khasmyn at dueling... Perhaps adding that he sparred against Kallisto wasn't such a good idea? "We can take it slow, if you'd like," he added, attempting to reassure him. "Giving it your all this early... ah, I dunno about you, but I've yet to create a warm-up that'll let me do that without causing my muscles to cramp!"

Khamsyn nodded. "Yeah, Kallisto is a great tutor and I learned the basics from her, but that's about it. I've yet to spar with anyone let alone her. I did manage to pick up a few moves on my own through experimentation and study, but not much." He felt a case of the babbles coming on and clamped his mouth shut until the urge to be overly wordy spewed forth. With a deep breath and a sigh, he smiled to Abacus. "I don't want to hinder you too much, but I'd appreciate taking it a bit slower until I get at least one match under my belt." He just stood there for a moment, not sure how this was supposed to start or anything, so he waited for Abacus to instruct him from here. "I'm as ready as I'll ever be."

Abacus nodded in agreement. "Yeah, I learned a lot from her... I've yet to learn how to duck when her kicks come flying, though," he added with a laugh, rubbing the back of his head. "Ah, don't worry about it. I've learned most of my moves through studying too, namely Orry's The Weaponless Warrior." He spoke, backing up to give them both room before nodding. "Just to check... Did you stretch and warm up, yet? Leaping directly into a physical work-out without stretching is one way to cramp up easily, and trust me -- it's not fun." He blushed, looking away.

Khamsyn nodded again. "That's the same book I took out of the library." He smiled, Abacus and him had some things in common. Why hadn't they really spoken before now? Anyways, he backed up a few steps himself and shook out his limbs a bit. He'd done some stretches in his room and then jogged over here, so he felt pretty limber over all. There wasn't much left to do except get to it. He did sympathize with Abacus however, Kallisto's kicks seemed pretty deadly. He cringed at the thought of being on the recieving end of one. "Yep, I stretched before I came here, so I'm good to go."

"Ah! It's a good thing there's more than one copy of the teacher's references, huh?" He laughed, then nodded when Khamsyn replied. "All right -- here we go!" With that, Abacus bent his knees and dropped down into a stance, mimicking those he saw in the book. He eyed Khamsyn carefully then moved forward, quickly side-stepping to get around to Khamsyn's back before throwing a punch.

No sooner had Khamsyn nodded in argeement about there being more than one copy of Orrys' book, than Abacus dropped down into his stance and was on the attack. He tried not to over think things too much, tried to calm himself as quickly as possible and deal with the immediate threat. Abacus had got around him, so he just let his body react on instinct, throwing his body just far enough out of the way. Remembering what Kallisto had taught him he tried to keep his eye on his opponent, zeroed in on what looked like an opening and launched a simple kick to Abacus' side.

Abacus' punch flew past Khasmyn as he neatly side-stepped, earning a nod from Abacus. "Nice! Can't hit what's not there, huh?" He in turn swung his arm in an attempt to block Khasmyn's foot, before reaching out to grab ahold of it
reached out and attempted to grab Khasmyn's foot, preventing it from contacting his body. "Hey, nice shoes!" He quipped, before attempting to throw him by means of his pointy shoe.
Of course, things don't work out as planned. It wasn't until after Khasmyn's foot connected that he was able to grab ahold of it. And about throwing? Forget it. "...Uh, maybe not." He said, dropping Khasmyn's foot and preparing for the next attack.

The look of shock on Abacus' face when the kick connected was nothing compared to the look on Khamsyn's. He hadn't expected that to work for some reason, but he was happy it had. Fighting the urge to drop his guard and apologize to his opponent, he still couldn't help but bite his lip awkwardly.
He was surprised when Abacus caught his leg however and yanked it a little, maybe trying to throw him, but gave up and dropped it. Khamsyn didn't know what he would have done had his leg been kept trapped. But that didn't matter now, there was still more fighting to do.
Popping out a jab with his left hand, Khamsyn aimed for Abacus' jaw while his right fist shot low towards his gut a split second later.

Abacus forced himself to relax and ignore the stinging sensation in his midsection. He had to be faster then that! But at least he managed to catch his foot, even if the following throw didn't work out. There's something to work on, he decided, but for now -- incoming! Abacus backed up and dodged left and right, trying to out-manuever the punches.

Khamsyn felt both of his punches strike out and hit nothing but empty air. Abacus was quicker than he expected, but he knew what to expect now. He set himself, making sure his weight was centered just right, his footing was secure and his balance was strong. As Abacus dodged from one side to the other to avoid the punches, Khamsyn had already set up for his next attack, watching and timing it. Then, when it appeared his opponent might be just a tad off balance, he lunged forward with a straight front kick to the midsection... he hoped.
His hope was dashed as he knew he was in trouble a split second later. Though he was perfectly balanced and his kick was aimed rigth where he wanted it, he was just a step or two too far away. The kick hit the empty air in front of Abacus, totally ineffective.

Step, step, dodge -- it was moments like this that made Abacus grin in the midst of battle. To be one step ahead of your opponent, to be gone where they just struck! This was his favored way of fighting, though one couldn't dodge forever.
"Gyah!" He gasped, taking a step back as Khamsyn lashed out, using the moment to try and flank the other phlegm boy and throw a punch at his unprotected back. Or try to, at least -- he flanked too far, and while he was behind Khamsyn, he was too far away for his punch to reach.
