I took a few pictures today after bath-time. They smell so good. I like the smell of baby shampoo. Anyway, here are the new pictures:

Ash has thinning spots on his sides. Does anyone know why that might be? Martys coat is nice and thick with no signs of thinning at all.

Could be because of genetics.

Is that pine bedding mixed with pink carefresh?
If so, pine bedding is toxic. You should switch to aspen.

Pine bedding is not toxic. It just isn't recommended for rodents because it can cause problems. I had guinea pigs that used it all of their lives are were fine. Pine just can cause allergies.

No, I know pine is bad and causes respiratory problems, so I bought aspen chips. That is what those are. Those bald patches have since grown back in and now he has bald spots on the back of his head. I believe that it is because he is grooming too much, or Marty is "barbering" him.User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Rabbits are actually members of the order Lagomorpha and are members of the family Leporidae. No relation to rodents at all.

Yeah, rabbits used to be considered a rodent. But I don't think their teeth grow like rodents' do, so they got moved out of that group. I used to have rabbits when I was a kid. They are cute. I had a dwarf and a lop. The dwarf was one that we caught in the wild. I got the lop in a pet shop.User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Pine itself is not what harms the rats, its the dust and oils in it.

Aspen chips are bad for rats also. It's not the pine thats bad, its the dust that get collected into the rats lungs and build up, your supposed to use carefresh bedding or something like that. Aspen/pine dust causes lots of problems for rats, it makes them have defaulty in breathing.

Cute rats any way
All rats are such sweeties, I can't get enough of them

No its not, i have been using aspen for years with no problems at all. Show me articles where aspen has been proven bad.

Q: I've heard that cedar shavings are bad for rats. Is this true?
A:
Yes! Both cedar and pine shavings contain phenols, the oils in the wood that give them their fresh and woodsy smell. Phenols are poisonous, caustic, acidic compounds present in soft woods, and are routinely diluted for use in disinfectants (such as Pine-Sol and Lysol) and cover the smell of animal urine. Because phenols are caustic, they constantly irritate the nasal passages, throat and lungs which gives an easy opening to bacteria. Phenols affect the kidneys and liver, the organs responsible for filtering blood and urine and eliminating toxins from them. Long-term exposure to phenols can cause liver damage and make the animal very sensitive to anesthetics. Exposure to phenols can also depress the immune system, thus causing lowered resistance to diseases such as respiratory infection. Pine and cedar shavings are toxic to small animals and should not ever be used.

Pine is toxic. Im sure if you did a necropsy on the guinea pigs you would find enlarged livers due to having to live on that horrible stuff.

aspen is fine for rats. its pine and ceder that are bad because of the oils. aspen is perfectly fine for many animals, including rats, its just very messy which is why alot of people dont use it.
carefresh is also full of dust. i cant use it with my boys at all, it makes their respitory infections even worse
