Since i don't remember if i did one here yet or if it got deleted.
Ah.. Final Fantasy.. The first of a great series of games that have kept rpgs going strong for over two decades..
It may seem boring and challenging for this day in age, but consider that this RPG only had one big competitor. Dragon Warrior. And it blew DW out of the water. But, on to the review, shall we?
Story, (10/10): Considering this was on the NES, a system not known for it's big story games, the storyline for this game was epic. You start out as four warriors on a quest to save the princess of Corneria from Warlord Garland. After his defeat, you gain permission to explore the land as you see fit, seeing how you're adventurers. You discover a blind witch needs help, and as you help her and others along the way, you discover that the world needs heroes to crush four great evils that have been brought to the world to destroy it, and you four are the only ones that can.
It's a thrilling story that combines time travel, futuristic inventions, a great plotline, and the standard of adventurers helping the little guy, no matter what the cost. Overall a Powerful game storywise.
Gameplay, (8/10): You start out with the beginning of a final fantasy trademark you don't see often enough for my taste.. The Class System. You choose 4 people out of 6 classes. You can pick a fighter, a thief, a white mage, and a black mage, or 4 fighters, or if you're really ballsy, 4 white mages. Your choice determines how difficult the game will be, since 4 fighters makes the game a breeze except for the lack of good healing and the high cost of equipment, or 4 white mages which most consider the ultimate challange due to the lack of attack power and low defense.
Classes included:
----The Fighter. The heavy armored power house that can equip the strongest equipment in the game, and even gets some white magic later.
----The Thief. The quick escaping swift attacker that equips mostly knives and almost always helps you escape from battle. Upgrades into a powerhouse attacker that can equip very strong equipment and even use black magic, including the powerful FAST spell(known now as Haste)
----The Black Belt. A nunchuk using bare hands fighter with incredibly low defense. Later in the game his nunchuks become useless because his bare hands are stronger, and gains the highest attack power in the game. Doesn't stop his terrible defense though. His upgrade only enhances what he's got, nothing special, just stronger.
----The Red Mage. Versatile, Magic using sword wielder who uses both Black and White Magic. Unfortunately, while he's GREAT For the beginning, he's terrible in the later half. He can't equip the most powerful equipment, he can only use three spells per spell level, so you have to pick which spells you're willing to sacrifice for his versatility. His upgrade doesn't get much help, he gets some stronger spell levels, but not the strongest.
----The White Mage. Healing, Hammer Using magic wielder. If you want to heal outside of potions, the White mage is the way to go. She can deal decent damage early with her hammer, and her healing spells are the best in the game. When upgraded she gets the best healing spells in the game, and a powerful attack spell.
----The Black Mage. Knife wielding Destructaholic. Using mostly attack spells, he can obliterate every enemy in a burst of magic, from Fire1 to NUKE. He also has very useful utility spells, including the Very powerful FAST, to the also good TMPR(Temper, increases Attack power). Black mages may be weak physically, but upgraded they get access to Powerful weapons, Like the Catclaw, and the magic spell NUKE.
It's turn based.. you pick all your targets and your opponents choose theres, and it goes by the fastest to determine order. It gets pretty annoying in battle considering if you target an enemy and it dies before you attack it, your attack basically gets wasted(a problem fixed in FF3). Magic was based on charges. you only had so many of each level, and when they were used up, the only way to replenish them was to go to an Inn and rest. There was no other way. There was also no way to revive your team members outside of the LIFE spell and the clinics, and the only items were Cure Potions, Health Potions, and one other i don't remember.. Either way, there wasn't much in terms of Items for you.. It added to the challange, but made long dungeon crawls VERY painful.. Experience tended to flow quickly, with a cap at level 50, yet unless you were a power leveler, the game was going to be tough if you didn't stay and fight for a while.
It also had several vehicles you could use, and fun ways of getting them as well. You wanted the Ship? Steal it from pirates! You want to canoe? Save the land and talk to an old guy who just happens to have it with him somehow. Want the airship? Grab a magic stone and head to an ice cave to raise it from the desert!
As for the actual battles, equipment comes in many varieties, most with special powers, and each weapon has a unique graphic when you attack with it. Basic weapons are bought in the stores in town, and the more magical(and powerful) weapons are found in dungeons if you're willing to look alittle harder. Magic spells are always bought in town
Graphics (10/10): It's the NES, so you can't expect the best graphics in the world. But for it's time, the graphics were wonderful. Inspired scary monsters, beautiful areas, and the main characters even change their graphics to "Adult" forms halfway through the game if you're willing to do a side quest for Bahamut(no summons here folks).
Sound (9/10): I don't know exactly how to say this, but it's got nice sound, music that fits the location(mostly), and overall a nice experience. if you don't like it, well, you can always turn it off. ^.^
Replay Value (10/10): It's got Excellent Replay value if you enjoyed it the first time. Play it with a different group of classes. Beat it with four fighters, Try four Thieves. Beat it with a fighter, a black belt, a black mage and a white mage? Try two redmages with your figther and black belt.
Overall a great game to play, with new versions for the Playstation and he GBA. I recommend the GBA version myself, simply for side quests it gives.

Maybe, though i'm sure like with FFIV(?) and FFXII i'll get stuck and put it aside for who knows how long, though if you post a link (PM or post it here) to the emulator and the game, I might be more willing to try it out. though I think i'd try the NES first, I might just play the GBA since the graphics are slightly better...i'm sure (same format/gameplay as original, but maybe a few bugs fixed and a better pixel quality lol.

I don't know exactly where to find it now, but all you have to do is google them. You'll find the stuff really quick. And Saku.. Just play the GBA Version. Better graphics, it's less hairpulling, and if you want difficulty theres optional dungeons with bosses that will kill you with one spell(I know. I had to go all the way back and pick up the NulThunder, or whatever its called, spell just to survive). Google "Visualboy Advance" And "Final Fantasy Dawn of Souls ROM", and i bet you'll find both easily.
