So, this past month or so I've been really GASing for a godly clean amplifier, but none of the ones that I've found thus far really deliver the goods, however, I've played, in all, about twenty different amps, thus far. I have the entirety of today off, so I'm planning on going into Guitar Center, playing EVERYTHING that they ******** have, and building a circuit that integrates all the pieces of them that I like.
Since you obviously won't have replied to this by the time I leave, I'm going to retrospectively consider advice for this topic when I come back from my excursion. In return for your help, if I ever do finish this, I'll post the schematic so that you can wire your very own tone clone ********' machine, if you feel like dancing with the devil in the pale moonlight.
The pieces that have already jumped at me are as follows: +The AC-30's vibrato is pretty much beast. +Of course, the Fender '65 Twin packs a hell of a reverb, especially if you kick the amp when the guys in the store are occupied. +Eggnator has a half stack out that has an amazing "classic clean" channel. It ******** sparkles. I highly reccomend that you try this thing out when you get the chance.
I haven't yet found an amplifier that overdrives sufficiently when you crank it, although I'm going to have to go back when nobody's around to do this to the Twin and the Eggnator. I also need a mellow channel, and I've been looking into a Blues Deville, for that, but I'm not sure, yet. At any rate, I'll get some personal impressions of gear today and tote them all back to you to be read in one epic post.

Mesa/Boogie Lone Star 2x12. I have yet to read a review that says the amp has anything less than the most amazing reverb they've ever heard. It gets an incredible overdrive and has a godly clean tone, too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiW22O914CgPosted it a few times, but I've yet to see a better video displaying a Lone Star. And I've yet to see a guitar tone I think sounds more badass. Though by the fact that you like a Blues Deville, you might not be into that singing overdrive. >_> I can't stand Fender overdrives at all.

I actually checked out a mesa lonestar, today. It was a little too meaty for my tastes, and the reverb didn't have the aquatic quality that I'm after, t I am thinking about creating a separate preamp section, and that overdrive does sound ideal for that segment, although I'd like to get my hands on one of the mark series to check it out, as well.
I quite agree, though. Fender's overdrive is weak, Vox doesn't have a whole lot when pushed, either, unless you're AT FULL FORCE. I found that the Black Star AC 30 semiclone has a good crunchy overdrive (which is exactly though it does muddy up a bit when cranked. I might tinker with some pot values or something to fix that. I'm going to go eat food, then come back and think about this plan.

I do like the way that that drives, and the idea of the tone control removal switch for bOOSTEd mIDs. It does seem like a blues machine, though, and I'd like something more versatile for my sparkly jazzy runs. The big imperative is that I get that eggnator classic sound with less of the crappy, weak features that it's got. Thanks for the idea, though. I'll definitely look into incorporating bits of that schematic.

From what I've heard about its clean tone, its either a copy of a Fender or an improvement depending on who you ask. Mostly I've heard that the clean tone is even better. But yeah.
I definitely want to see this schematic.

'Kay, new plan.
It's come to my attention that the amplifiers that I'm looking at have a good deal in common, but not enough to easily incorporate with eachother. I'm almost certain that I'll have to change every single resistor value in order to keep the amp from exploding.
For the time being, I'm instead going to just absorb the existing amplifier schematics (The twin and the AC30 are published, for sure, if any of you are keen on doing a dangerous DIY project anytime soon.) and learn what I can about opamps. The biggest problem with my initial plan is that I'd have to create about four different completely separate circuits in order to get all the s**t that I'm aiming for, and nobody wants to tote around a two hundred pound combo, not even me.
Oh, yeah, tubes are a damn problem. Not only is it hard to find good ones, it's even harder to find cheap ones, and between the EL84s, 12AX7s, 12AT7s, 6L6s, ECC83s, and EF86s (And several more), I'm looking at a hugely expensive machine that's mostly made of glass. This is also detrimental to being carried, as a jolt will render this model all ******** up.
So yeah, definitely overextended my reach, here. I'll keep y'all updated, though, if my own circuit starts working out.

Two hundred pounds of glass? You're going to break it the moment you set it down because there's no way you're setting that down gently. But, still, maybe you'll be able to make it a workable concept someday. Hm.

But, still, maybe you'll be able to make it a workable concept someday. Hm. Hahah. My point exactly. Twenty four tubes is just twenty four different places that you can break. I can definitely see this concept being on hold for a good year while I research, though. I'ma go do that, now.

24 of them? No wonder you can't find a cheap tube. If you go NOS (which is a hit or very much miss in badassery), then that's $2k on the tubes alone and yeah, I can totally see why that won't work unless you make your own parts that are essentially tonal clones of the amps you want to work with.

The best clean tone I've ever heard was a set up that a guitarist I know runs. He has a Fender Vintage Reissue Reverb Unit run through a Dr. Z custom amp (http://www.drzamps.com). This produces the most amazing blues, jazz, surf, and country tones! Really expensive set up though, I don't think they make his exact amp anymore.
Other great clean tones: Vox AC30 Fender Twin Reverb and Princeton amps Peavey Classic 30 and Delta Blues
