THE ESSENCE & THE SOUL ►WAVERING TEA LEAVES For hundreds of years diviners have called upon tea leaves for a brief glimpse of the future. It's a simple regimen. Pour the water, drink the tea, stir the cup... but these leaves are less willing to cooperate than most. Restless in any environment, these leaves shift and swirl, settling on a shape only to change direction in favor of another pattern. • Tassology A divination or fortune-telling method that interprets patterns in tea leaves, coffee grounds, or wine sediments. The first inklings of Western tasseography can be traced to medieval European fortune tellers who developed their readings from splatters of wax, lead, and other molten substances. This evolved into tea-leaf reading in the seventeenth century, a short time after Dutch merchants introduced tea to Europe via trade routes to China.
The Encyclopedia of Occultism & Parapsychology, Fifth Edition, Vol. 2 edited by J. Gordon Melton, notes:
'After a cup of tea has been poured, without using a tea strainer, the tea is drunk or poured away. The cup should then be shaken well and any remaining liquid drained off in the saucer. The diviner now looks at the pattern of tea leaves in the cup and allows the imagination to play around the shapes suggested by them. They might look like a letter, a heart shape, or a ring. These shapes are then interpreted intuitively or by means of a fairly standard system of symbolism, such as: snake (enmity or falsehood), spade (good fortune through industry), mountain (journey of hindrance), or house (change, success).'
Melton's described methods of pouring away the tea and shaking the cup are rarely seen; most readers ask the querent to drink the tea off, then swirl the cup. Most readers use the standard symbols that have been handed down through several generations. There are, however, many who prefer to read by feel and intuition, as stated by Melton.
It is traditional to read a cup from the present to the future by starting along the rim at the handle of the cup and following the symbols downward in a spiral manner, until the bottom is reached, which symbolizes the far future. Most readers see images only in the dark tea leaves against a white or neutral background; some will also read the reverse images formed by seeing the symbols that form in the white negative spaces, with a clump of dark leaves forming the background. It says you're open for crit, so I'll get right to it. :3
Essences:
Perpetual Hourglass - Sadly, since the hourglass is a man-made object, it's automatically null and void. Remember that all Fel Essences are things found in nature, never man-made or effected by human interference (charms, spells, whatever). All were tainted by the Storm. Also, I can't really imagine what sort of powers would come from something that just drains. >:
Bottled Heartbeat - This is interesting, but we already have a disembodied, bottled sound Essence in the form of Melisande's 'Divine Song'. When I talked to Kyou, she said there's nothing about an empty fel vial that particularly grips her, so you have that working against you. Also, like the Hourglass, I can't really imagine what sort of powers this would create, sadly.
Self-Weaving Web - This is an interesting base concept. The only power I can assume a Raevan with this Essence would have though would be to create spider webs, which my own Raevan (with the soul of a black widow spider) would also have. Feeding's also a big factor as well, since it's Essence-derived and like your first two, I can't really see anything for this beyond eating spider webs. Like I said though, the base idea for it is interesting.
Windblown Kiss - This I'm also not so sure on. The idea behind it is cute, but as with the others powers and feeding don't come to mind unless you cross into the realm of Snoof's Raevan with his 'Forceful Mistletoe' Essence. Plus, a kiss isn't really a nature-based sort of thing either. I'm gonna have to say you may need to toss some of these, but don't give up. :3 There's plenty of ideas out there! Just be sure to visit the gallery to look in on what Fels are already in use.
Soul:
Mandrake: Are you going for the mythical aspects of the root or the actual, every day standard stuff? I see you're using a chapter image from the Harry Potter books as your reference image - not that that's a bad thing - but so far all I know about Mandrakes is from there and what I read about your soul. The fact that the only "power" of the mythical side of the plant is that its scream kills people has me feeling leery. Death-based powers are a big 'no' so souls like the Grim Reaper are off limits so there wouldn't be godmodding or killing off other people's Raevans or guardians even by accident. What other powers could come out of this soul? And remember to not limit yourself to just the one; it may be hard to choose between two or three, but at least you'd have a couple options in reserve if one isn't usable.

I'm glad I was able to help. >w< In my experience it's good to look at the gallery, see what's there, and if you still want to use a similar type (like water or fire) to look into the various traits of said type. Try to avoid fire Essences though, we've already got two or three at my last count. :3
Oh well that's good then! I'm really glad to hear that you'd be avoiding the death wail. >w< With that in mind, I think your mandrake would be fine to quest for, but yes always have a back up or two as I said. Just a side note, I'm not sure how true the knockout cry of infant mandrakes is. That might just be J.K. Rowling taking creative liberties, but as I said the most I know about them is from HP and a quick wiki skim.

Hey! :3 You've got some interesting ideas at work -- I don't know if we have any wind-based Raevans other than Zav... you may want to watch out, btw, since he's storm-based. I LOVE the Zephyr idea, though!
Just a quick question... when you say your guardian is 'native indian', do you mean a native of india, or do you mean native american? smile Just for clarification.
