Nostrils flared out as she breathed deep. The scent of darkness filled her lungs, dripping into her airstream like poison; drip, drip, dripping. Ear-wings flattened and the mare snorted.

It was close... She could practically taste it and it was disgusting. Enough to turn her stomach.

Aleksei snorted again, flipping her mane as she trudged on through the twilighted mists.

She hated the breed; she was raised and trained to kill them. Anything following the path of destruction. It was her duty to rid the world of the unworthy.

But other scents mingled in with the poison as she moved. Familiar scents. Worthy scents. Feathers... Large birds? Or perhaps a Wind family...

She wasn't sure, but if she could pass through the herdlands without disturbing anyone, she would.

Acapello moved swiftly and quietly through the forest. He could sing like a nightingale, but now he chose to be silent on both hoof and wing. The mist swirled around him, and his mind played tricks on him, making him see lost spirits intertwined with the tiny water droplets floating around him. He snorted once, and shoved through the misty barrier in front of him. This was a dangerous night to be out, skinwalkers and kalona's lurked in this forest. Already Acapello had heard a shout, to be swiftly cut off.

For now the night was silent as he was, but the gloom was pressing in on him. He shook his head and flattened his ears. He took a deep breath, feeling the heavy air stick to his lungs. The mist was shutting out most of the scent, but something else was here, something strange, but not harmful, not entirely.

He heard a rustle, ever soft, but not too far away. He bared his teeth and raised his wings, tense, ready to fight. If it didn't have wings, he would have the upper hand.

She had heard the shout as well; one soft, helpless aria that lasted only seconds before the singer was slain, or so the Angeni assumed. She was rarely wrong on these occasions...

The cry made her heart heavy, just as the fog made the air heavy. There would be no saving the victim this time. She could only stop the predator from killing again.

Slowly, her head rose up as ears coined into the sound of another's breathing. Her skin twitched over muscle, a flick of red. Ear feathers flicked back and forth, like a radar of sorts, and her body fell still.

She didn't know that the stallion amidst the mists wasn't the enemy. If she did, she wouldn't have puffed herself up as much as she had. She wouldn't have given a snort. A "I know you're here, come out," snort.

Acapello took a mental step back as the angeni came into his view, she didn't look like she wanted to kill him, but then again, looks were decieving. He narrowed his eyes as she called out to him. He knew she would find him eventually, why prolong the wait. He let his lips fall over his teeth again, but kept his wings in a ready position.

Needless to say, he wasn't stupid, not close. His grandmother was an angeni, and his aunt was a half angeni. Acapello knew they were a proud race, and no doubt this red mare, what with her trinkets and bangles, was one of the proudest. He had to hold back a sort of derision, as the angeni puffed herself up. It was a little comical.

He took a careful step out of the underbrush, and was silent. He had nothing required to say to this stranger, and she probably didn't want anything to do with him either. The thick fog closed in further, making Acapello's eyes feel soft and heavy as the growing gloom continued. He couldn't resist a remark, so he said, "I know you're here as well, but we of single wings use words instead of snorts and grunts to relay our requests." He raised an eyebro

Aleksei's muscles tensed as the stranger moved. Although shrouded in darkness and fog, she could hear his hooves against the underbrush.

Ears pinned back, she stamped a hoof and held her place, expecting to see the horns of the enemy, his wings large and leathered. Instead, she blinked back at the somewhat sarcastic voice that belonged to a large winged Soquili... Not a wind, but not an angeni.

"Er...sorry. I thought you were something else." Not someone. Something. She huffed at herself and relaxed. He had to've had angeni background; the wings were too large, too perfect otherwise. "What brings you out to the middle of nowhere, Single-wing?" she asked, using his own nickname against him.

Acapello stepped out of the underbrush from where he had still be half hidden. He stood tall, his wings raised above, in the natural position they sat in. It felt strange to fold his wings in, though it was slightly cumbersome when moving though thick forest. He knew that he was sometimes mistaken for an angeni, but felt that was irrelivent. After all, he was only one fouth angeni, his grandmother had been one. He viewed himself as the son of a winged and a grounded, no other family background really mattered.

He chuckled, "Something else? A little squirrel, or perhapes a vicious looking bunny?" He narrowed his eyes playfully. He did enjoy battles of wit and tongue. This angeni seemed to be formidable at this game as he listened to her last remark.

"If we are in the middle of nowhere, what defines the edge? Everywhere is somewhere. Some might call this the darkest part of the forest, but to the usual Kalona, this might be home." He prickled as she used single wing in a mocking tone. Though it was much better than mutant, or freak.

A vicious looking bunny... The mare let out a snort of indignance. "Do I look like a bunny-hunter to you?" She raised a brow and scuffed at the ground, wings folding inwards. The way he carried himself was odd, at least to her.

"The Kalona -do- consider this their home. Haven't you heard the screams?" She was going to lose track of this one, though. It wasn't in her nature to blow off the young stallion; she'd just have to pick up the scent later on...

Acapello grinned, and said with a touch of sarcasm, "Oh, yes, though quite a terrifying one." He snickered inwardly, but on the outside kept his composure, mostly. He cocked an eyebrow curious, as she folded in her wings. Either she didn't find him a threat, or she figured he wouldn't do anything anyway. He snorted, a little put out.

He scowled darkly, "Of course I have heard the screams, but would you deny another living creature, be they evil or not, the right to food, water, and safe shelter?" He stomped a hoof, how could the world be blind? "A Kalona can't force itself to change its nature no more than you or I would be able to change ourselves. If I wouldn't change from a grass eater to a soquili eater, it would be hypocritical of me to tell a Kalona or a Skinwalker to stop eating other soquili and only eat plants."
