My college's newspaper is looking for new comic artists, so I thought I'd send them something and see how it goes.

I know the text and formatting is a little weird. I was kind of in a hurry. It'll look better when I have more time to work on them. Maybe I'll actually do lettering by hand at some point. I really suck at it, but avoiding it isn't going to help.

I'll probably continue it as a webcomic or something regardless of what happens with the paper.

The comic itself is based off of things that my friends and I actually have conversations about, and the people in it are based off of them as well (they had a lot of fun with that).

Well, first off, I really love the illustrations. You have a style that translates really well into this kind of work.

I'm not really feeling the first two strips, as they aren't that funny. I kinda like the third.

I think with time, you can develop strips with the same charm and humor in the writing as in the illustrations themselves.

we have nice hair then.

The ways your characters gesture and other wise show expression reminds me of Vera Brogol's style.

Not in a oh, you ripped her off way, more like a love how you guys do that way.

nice art, but the first comic is the only one that made me laugh or chuckle or smirk or snicker.

Not funny, and there's a lot of periods missing. xp

I like the art, though. ^^

The first one, for instance (all of this is my opinion and humour is very subjective). The second frame drains any humour that the comic might be setting up for. Maybe if she were smirking it would help, but she has a thoughtful look on her face. Actually, just get rid of that frame. XP

I don't understand the second one at all, but that's prolly because I don't listen/pay much attention to anything past the 70s. ^^

The third one is ok. It's not spectacular, but there's nothing that I can think of that could possibly be a kickstart.

On a whole, I think that 4 frames is too much. For the most part, you're using punchlines that would be better delivered faster without extra stuff to read through.

Don't listen to what they say about them not being funny. Artfags have no senses of humour.

They are humerous, amusing even. Not LOL rofl material, but that is not really what a strip comic is for, in my mind. They are cute and endearing and better than average newspaper fare.

I think that your college newspaper will benefit from your work. Keep it up, and when you have built up a good volume of strips you should have something that will make an enjoyable read.

i should know, i don't laugh at anything these days.
and these -are- cute, and they are amusing, and with comic strips that counts for a lot. they don't have to be hilarious. especially if you're doing these for a school paper, where endearing and chilled out is a lot more valuable.

loving the gestures and the illustrative thing you've got going on. i'd like to see it as a continued webcomic.

edit:
and i think that four frames is just fine.

Four frames can be fine, but here it's just a bunch of adding extra stuff that generally doesn't need to be there, and adds nothing to the 'punch line.'

...I've already given most of the reasons. confused It, the writing collectively, seems to need to be refined.

-----------

It doesn't have to be hilarious, of course. Most comic strips aren't hilarious, but they still maintain a level of interest. I can't find that here, for me. I may or may not be a funny person. : 3

I'm not an Artfag besides. : )

Humour is, as I said, very subjective. It depends on the listener which person they want to believe, and I'll just go on making my case. : P

Thanks, guys biggrin It's actually kind of cool that you guys don't all agree or find them funny. Gives me something to think about next time! Do any of you guys have a favorite comic strip or anything like that? I'm interested in hearing what you like to read.

I agree with Alexandrea Zenne that humor is really subjective (and about all the missing periods D: I didn't notice those before). Personally, I'll laugh at just about anything (including things I really shouldn't find funny). I wasn't really aiming for funny as much as I was amusing or endearing, but it's true that those qualities don't always appeal to people. I guess it depends on what you're expecting to read. I don't know if these comics actually have a punch line per se, which may be something else I could work with.

I like working with four frames, though. It gives me enough space to include what I want, but, as was pointed out, it may not always be a good idea. I'll definitely take that into consideration since I don't plan on keeping the format the same for every comic.

They're a lot funnier and better drawn than most of the comics I read in the newspaper, so that's something to be proud of. biggrin

i'm a webcomic whore. over this summer i amassed a pretty formidable art-comic collection, but when my computer went crazy and ate all my links i had to regroup them and some are probably still missing.

here are a few that i think you'll find a vaguely similar to your own in intent in that they're pen/ink, autobiographical/daily random stuff, or not-so-obvious humour. or are just kinda neat.
http://devilspanties.keenspot.com/
http://www.brunostrip.com/bruno.html which is on hiatus but is pretty awesome.
http://www.aworldlikemyown.com/html/index.html
the art isn't fantastic, but it's sweet.
http://rockyfoxtop.keenspace.com/ which hasn't updated in a while.
and as has already been mentioned, http://www.verabee.com.

i have weirder/more eclectic ones that i can link you to if you want, but i feel like i'm filling an otherwise nice clean board up with links.

edit:
aww man. especially with non-clicky links. ): *de-tidies*

Aww, I really like that second to last one. And yeah, I do like Vera Brosgol's artwork quite a bit.

You can go ahead and post the others if you want! I don't mind. I was trying to post some, but it won't let me without showing the code for some reason.
