Dunno if you heard it, but Abney Park announced it on their site. Airship Ventures is using the world's largest Zeppelin to provide the first ever commercial airship flight in the US in over 70 years.

I dislike the design of their airship. xP

I have resolved, that if I ever have a grand excess of money, to build an airship specifically for studying the canopy of rainforests and to take scientific analysis of atmospheric conditions. =] If I do end making an airship,I swear that it will be designed with wood, canvas, and brass. Or at least substitute materials that look like those materials. =B

In addition, I may on a whim simply use it to travel and pick up steampunk enthused friends on the way. xD

Edit: According to that site, the passenger capacity of a giant squid is 1.2 passengers. Well that's a good thing to know, I guess.

I, too, intend to construct a sky-worthy vessel.

To that effect, I intend to take an Engineering course at university, and have ordered some rather nifty books on airship technology.

Brilliant! We could bring about a revolution of airships for commercial and scientific use!

First things first, I will attempt to research an innovative way to power it which is cheap and clean.

Not very steampunk I know, but I was planning use solar cells - perfectly green, and airships don't need all that much energy (unless there's a lot of wind). Not very cheap though in terms of capital costs, but saves money in the long run.
Also, if I'm flying with the wind, 'windmills' on the airship could be used to generate power.

Windmills are a wonderful idea. I'm quite drawn to the idea of creating a profitable way to fixate hydrogen and so use hydrogen fuel cell technology. Hydrogen is all around us, to the reaches of the end of the universe so it will never run out, and it's only waste is water, which could probably be collected and re-harvested for hydrogen, or used for other purposes.

Right now, the energy cost to draw out hydrogen from water is more than the energy created when the hydrogen binds to oxygen, but I think there may be a way to overcome that. =]

Also, I'm thinking ribbed compartments in the envelope, similar to the bottom of a raft might be able to be occupied if it was filled with oxygen rather than helium.

I would say solar panels is very steampunk. It fits with the idea of cities made of glass and metal (which is essentially what the panels are mostly made of.) It can be cut into any design, and it is efficient.

Yes, but it's hardly in-keeping with the principle of steam power.

How 'bout a technology that allows one's airship to absorb the clouds and use it as energy?

Unless you're suggesting we then electrolyse the water to get hydrogen, that's never going to happen. :/

Which takes electricity and thus power, as well, so it's a little bit of a chicken and egg problem, really. Though, perhaps something with magnets could be achieved, if you're willing to put in some hand-work with moving the magnets to change the magnetic field and generate current.

Wait! I got it! Gerbils!

Nah...

A hydrogen fuel cell/steam hybrid is not out of the question. After creating energy from the bonding of hydrogen and water, the fuel cell could be used to heat the resulting water to its vaporization point and keep it under high pressure to use. It would certainly be a clean way to use steam since there is no burning of coal. Though I'm guessing that would be highly inefficient.
