Part 1:
Snow in Summer
Another pleasant day in the village Hidden in the Leaves. We didn’t have any missions today so I was just having a nice walk through the village. Suddenly I felt something rub against my leg. I looked down and there was a little white kitten sitting next to my feet looking up at me. Its ears had black tips and the tail too. It also had a small black spot on its forehead and black front and back paws. *(An actual cat, not like Zelda.)*
“Hey there, where’d you come from?” I asked.
“Mew,” the kitten replied.
“You what?” I asked confused. “You want me to take you in?”
The kitten just looked up happily as its tail swished behind. I blinked a few times confusedly.
“Don’t you have a home?” I asked.
“Nya...” the cat replied. *(Nya and nyan are both meow in Japanese.)*
“Hm...well why not?” I said smiling.
“Nyan!!” the kitten replied and jumped into my arms.
...
“Aww, he’s so cute!” Jemima said bending down and letting the kitten rub against her face as it stood on the kitchen table.
“You knew it was a he just by looking at him?” I asked confused.
“You didn’t?” she replied.
“Um, ...well,” I said looking to the side.
“That’s right. I keep forgetting you weren’t raised a cat. Sorry,” Jem said.
“Oh, that’s alright,” I said smiling.
“Are we keeping him?” she asked as the kitten licked her nose.
“Do you want to? I don’t see a problem with it,” I said.
“Tee hee! Same here,” she said. “What do we name him?”
“How about Yuki? It means snow in Japanese, since he’s mostly white,” I suggested.
“I like that name,” Jem replied. Then she turned to Yuki. “Hi, Yuki. Welcome to your new home!”
“Nyan!”
...A month later...
Hina, Isai, Flare sensei and I were all standing in Lady Tsunade’s office as she briefed us on our newest mission.
“Your mission is to check on a small city of ninja near the northwestern border of the Land of Fire. These ninja are called the Gaoru,” Tsunade said.
“The Gaoru? I’ve never heard of them,” Flare said.
“A long time ago they were part of the Inuzuka clan, but they were accused of betrayal and we had to send them somewhere else to stop the constant fights between the two. So the were moved to the border to protect it. Once a year we send a group of ninja in disguise as normal travelers to make sure they aren’t planning a rebellion. This time around I chose your team because of your... talents,” she explained.
She tried to cover it up, but I could see what she really wanted to say.
“Why don’t you just say ‘diversity’?” I asked crossing my arms angrily.
“Zelda!” Hina said looking at me shocked.
“That’s what she meant. And honestly, how many other teams have any members that aren’t human?” I asked looking at her.
“Well, I guess that’s true,” Hina said looking down.
Then the door behind us opened and Shizune stepped in.
“Lady Tsunade, I’ve brought him,” she said.
“Good, send him in,” Tsunade said.
Then the door was pushed open and a familiar boy walked in. I stared in mixture of shock and disbelief.
“Why in the world would he be brought here of all places?!” I thought. My next thought was that he did something that got him in trouble, but that’s impossible! There’s no way he could do something like that. Not him!
“Hey Kimpa!” Hina exclaimed.
“Hello Hina,” he said and waved to her. Then he turned to me. “Good afternoon, Princess.”
“Kimpa...” was all I could manga to blurt out.
Kimpa strode over to us and stood next to me as he looked at Lady Tsunade.
“So, Kimpa is it?” Kimpa nodded. “It says here that you came from outside the village almost a year ago, is that right?” she asked.
“Yes, ma’am,” he replied.
“Oh no! Please don’t tell me he’s in trouble. Not Kimpa...” I thought in fear.
“So you know the area around the northwestern border of that Land of Fire I take it,” she continued.
“Yes, I do,” Kimpa said.
“Good. Then you’ll be accompanying this team on their mission. It seems like you already know them well enough,” she explained.
“That’s awesome! You get to come with us!” Isai said happily.
“This is gonna be fun!” Hina exclaimed as Flare sensei nodded and smiled.
I was relieved at first after hearing that he’s not in trouble, but now...
“No!!” I shouted.
Everyone looked at me confused.
“He can’t come with us!” I said.
“Zelda, why not?” Hina asked confused.
“He’s not a ninja, he has no way of protecting himself! He’ll be put in danger if he goes with us! What if those ninja are planning a rebellion? Kimpa will get hurt! I won’t let that happen! He can’t come with us!” I said forcefully while glaring at Lady Tsunade.
“So you want to defy me?” Tsunade asked with a smirk.
“You’re just sending him with ‘cause you don’t care if he gets hurt. You probably just figure there’ll be one less freak in the village, isn’t that right?” I asked back. “You hate us, don’t you?”
“Zelda, I’m sure that’s not it. It’s just ‘cause he knows us and he knows that area,” Hina said.
“Yeah, that has to be it. Lady Tsunade’s not being racist or anything,” Isai agreed.
“Hmpf, it’s the same everywhere,” I mumbled quietly.
“Are you finished accusing me?” Lady Tsunade asked.
I just turned the other way.
“Flare, take you team and go. Kimpa will go with. And I’m sure if Zelda really doesn’t want him to get hurt she’ll make sure of that,” Lady Tsunade said.
“Yes, Lady Tsunade,” Flare sensei said and we left.
As soon as we left her office I shouted, “Argh! I hate her!”
“Zelda, she’ll hear you,” Hina whispered.
“I don’t care! First she insults Kakashi sensei, then this. The third was ten times better then her!” I said angrily.
“That may be true, but we still have to follow her orders. She is the Hokage, we can’t deny that,” Flare sensei explained.
I sighed, “Yeah I know.”
...
I adjusted my backpack strap as I walked toward the Konoha gate to meet up with my teammates and Kimpa. I still didn’t like idea of Kimpa coming with us. I’m not trying to say that he’s weak, ‘cause he’s not. But still, he hasn’t been trained like we have. And there’s still a big difference between a ninja and just a regular guy who knows how to throw a punch.
“Come on Zelda! Hurry up!” Flare sensei called.
“Coming!” I replied.
I sped up a little and soon got up to the others.
“Is everyone ready?” Flare sensei asked.
“Yes sir!” Hina, Isai, and I saluted.
“I’m prepared,” Kimpa nodded.
“Good luck on your mission! Come back safe!” a man from behind the desk called. Suddenly I realized that he and the man sitting beside him looked extremely familiar. Then I remember, these two were sentinels for the first exam! The man with brown hair that covered his right was the one that had called out and the other who had dark spiky hair just sat with his arms crossed.
“Hey, you guys were instructors for the second exam, right?” I asked.
“That’s right!” the brown haired man said. “Izumo Kamisuki! And this guy here is Kotetsu Hagane.”
“Oh yeah, I remember them now!” Isai said.
“Thank you! We’ll be back soon!” Hina exclaimed.
“See ya!” I said and waved to them.
“Bye!” Izumo said happily.
As soon as we passed the gates Kotetsu asked, “Why do you do that?”
“Do what?” Izumo replied.
“Must you always talk to everyone?!” Kotetsu said sounding a bit annoyed.
“Hey! I was being polite, okay? Do you have a problem with that?” Izumo asked angrily.
Then the two began bickering back and forth as their voices got father and father away.
We all began laughing after we couldn’t hear them anymore.
“Those two are funny,” Hina giggled.
“Wow, what clowns,” Isai laughed.
“Wow, they’re something else,” I said.
“Tell me about it,” Flare sensei grinned.
Kimpa just smiled.
