He stared blankly at the paper in his hands, his eyes trying to focus on the add that he'd circled earlier that morning with one of his sister's pink sharpies, and he frowned slightly as his brain read over the message one more time before summarizing it.
Someone had a huge house and needed people, easy enough. He lived in a small house with more than enough people, so taking whoever had placed this add in the paper, this "Hilaire Montroe", had his attention for the moment. His mother and father had always urged him (albeit in silent ways) to get out since the house was crowded anyway, and depending on the rent in this place he may have found somewhere easy...on the first try.
Rory Cooper always opted for optimism in all situations, seeing as his job never called for it, so with the paper in his hand he knocked on the massive door that sprawled before him.

Hilaire was in the living room closest to the door when the knock resounded though the mansion. She looked up from her book and decided to get it herself. It took her a moment to get there, her leg had fallen asleep. When she arrived she expected a salesman or someone giving talks about religion. However, it was a young man that looked nothing like she expected. "Uh, hello, how may help you?"

"Hey there. I'm responding to an add placed in the paper about rooms for rent? My name's Rory Cooper."
Rory smiled brightly, hopefully shedding some light away from his features. Seeing as he hadn't slept or shaved (though he did shower) in the past few days a healthy crop of stubble lined his face and dark circles rimmed his eyes blacker than any kind of make-up. His hair hung lightly over his ears and looked as though it had been layered, though since it was a rich russet color it was kind of hard to tell.
He was dressed plainly as he'd come from his job as a groundskeeper to get here, and the smell of fresh dirt clung to the brown stains that lined the knees of his faded blue jean pants. He was wearing a nice shirt though, one appropriate for the weather, and sticking out of the back pocket of his pants were a pair of yellow work gloves long since discolored thanks to use.
"Are you Ms. Montroe?"

It sounded so weird being called that, even though all the help did. "Uh yeah, sure come on in. And please, call me Hilaire." She opened the door fully so he could get past her. Once he was in, she closed the door behind them and walked to another set of open doors a few feet away.
"Would you like anything to eat or drink?" She said as she motioned him into the room. "Please make yourself at home.

"Nah, I'm good on food. I just came from work where I ate only about an hour ago, but if you have any water I might be tempted to take you up on that offer."
Rory stepped into the massive home, making sure to knock dried dirt off his shoes before he went in, and at first he couldn't really believe the sheer size of the room he was in. The entryway alone was bigger than three of the rooms in his parents house - combined.
"So you're leasing out rooms? Must be kind of lonely living in such a huge house. Anything you need to know from me before I start questioning you?"

Hilaire tapped a finger against her mouth. She walked over to a pitcher in the room and poured him a glass of water. She tried to think of anything that may bother her about him being here, and thus far she couldn't come up with anything. She brought the glass to him, and sat in the chair where she left her book. "I can't really think of anything that might bother me, I mean we might not even run into each other. I don't mind any pets, and each room is well soundproofed so you can be as loud as you'd like."

Rory accepted the drink with thanks and quickly chugged the water down. He wasn't the type to take him time on food or drinks since he never knew when he'd have to get back to work, and with a last swallow he lowered the cup and kept it in his hand.
"I'm not one for animals myself though I do like birds, but I don't have any pets. I work two jobs and go to school so chances are I'd never be here unless I'm sick or changing to go from one place to another. Honestly I just need a place to stay that isn't crowded like my family's house, and your mansion happens to be right between my school and my night job."
He didn't move to sit down because he was aware of how much dirt he had on his clothing, so Rory just stayed standing.
"Is there anyone else here besides you?"

"Well, there is the help. And there is one other...person here. He's been in his room mostly though lately. You don't have to worry about him. If he ever bothers you just tell me and I'll deal with him." She scowled slightly at the thought of Lucifer, then smiled at Rory.
"Rent is cheap, because I mainly just want people here. I don't care about money. Besides, its hard to do office chair races without an opponent."

"Office chair races, eh? You think you can beat me?"
Rory chuckled and smiled brightly, his mind made that he would be living in this house if not to simply keep this young woman company. That and if rent was cheap he couldn't ask for anything better, but. . .
"I'll have you know the guys at the hospital call me the Champ for good reason. I've only lost once and that was because of interference."
Memories of running into a gurney being wheeled out invaded his memory and he winced a little, thinking about how he woke up on said gurney with a large bruise and several doodles (and words) on his face. Ah, interns.
"If you're willing to put up with a guy who comes home smelling like dirt, sugar, or hospital, then I'm more than glad to take a room off your hands."

Hilaire's smile grew bigger. "Excellent. I can't wait. You can move in whenever you want. Your room will be up the stairs, to the left, up the first small flight of stairs you come to and it'll be the first door on the right."
She knew this house like the back of her hand now. She'd spent days just wandering around. The help got slightly annoyed, but it wasn't too bad. "If you want, I can show you it now. I don't really have much else to do. That's if you have time."

"It would be easier if you showed me, as I have no idea what you just said. I got lost after the stairs."
Rory chuckled again and motioned with his hand for Hilaire to lead the way. He thought he may have brightened her mood based on the grin she sported, and as long as he could make people smile then things were worth it. After all, wasn't he trying to be someone who could make others happy?
"By 'help' do you mean full time or part time? Do they cook the meals or just keep things clean?"
Speaking of cooking . . .
"Actually, before the room...could we see the kitchen?"

[I plan on making a map of the mansion hopefully tonight lol]
A strange request, but one she could easily fulfill. "Sure, no problem at all. Follow me."
Hil had spent many hours in the kitchen, especially at night when she couldn't sleep. It was on the ground floor, just down one of the hallways beside the large staircase.
"They kinda do a bit of everything. I'm not totally sure, I actually don't deal with those things. Well, at least not yet. Walter, the head butler does. I mean, I've seen a few people more than once. But I've kinda left that to him until I can take it over." They entered the large kitchen, which could best be described as a chef's paradise. After all, it was designed so that large amounts of food could be cooked for parties, galas ect.

. . . .Amazing. Breathtaking. Glorious. Rory almost dropped the glass he still held in his hand at the mere sight of the kitchen but managed to keep hold of it as he let his jaw drop instead. It was huge, like he expected it to be, but it was something akin to heaven in a small room. There were cabinets of every size and counter tops galore, and Rory was pretty sure the oven there would bake more than fifteen things at once if properly allowed.
Indeed, heaven.
"....I think you have stolen my heart. I didn't think I'd ever get to see something like this without having to go to a professional school or a really rich restaurant. Imagine all the things one could bake in here."

Hilaire's smile grew bigger. "You bake? That's really cool! I do some myself. I'm sure the chef's wouldn't care if I said it was ok. But I totally want some of whatever you make."
She giggled slightly. "Go ahead, explore. I don't mind waiting at all."

"I like baking, it runs in my family. We own a small bakery near the station so I help out there when I'm not working or going to school. Being able to bake in a kitchen like this without having to fight off siblings and parents and other relatives seems really like a dream."
Rory moved about and touched things here and there, taking note of where bowls and other items were stored as he opened various drawers and doors. A good baker always knew where things were so he could get them in an instant.
"Is there anything you like best of all? Baked goods wise, that is."
Perhaps he could make her something now, since he had plenty of free time. The bakery was over stocked today and he had no classes thanks to the teacher getting some kind of food poisoning yesterday (no fault of his own, naturally).
