Sirius' parents were first-cousins-once-removed. That's too incestuous for comfort. Poor Padfoot. sad James and Sirius' mother were first cousins, which makes James and Sirius first-cousins-once-removed, which makes Sirius and Harry second cousins. Interesting, right? Think Harry knew?

Looking at the tree, wouldnt that make Harry and Draco related in some way?

Wishful thinking, but no. D:! J.K revealed that the Potter on the tree is not James' dad. He is somehow related to James, but not his father. Therefore, Harry and Sirius are related, just not that closely.

Quote: Looking at the tree, wouldnt that make Harry and Draco related in some way? Draco's grandfather (on his mother's side) is the nephew of Harry's grandmother (on his father's side). I'm not sure what the term for that is, but yes that would make them related in some fashion.See where Dorea Black and Charlus Potter have 1 son? I think that's James because JKR said that James was an only child of pureblood parentage that his parents didn't manage to have until they reached an older age. Because James was essentially their "miracle baby" they spoiled him, which gave him the exaggerated sense of self-importance that we all love (or hate in Snape's case) him for. James Potter's Harry Potter Wiki Profile Quote: Tom Marvolo Riddle (distant cousin) † I know all wizarding families are connected but I thought it was funny that Voldemort was put as part as James' family! Minerva, I am looking for the interview for you I promise! I just have to find it again! eek I am sure I read it. Gahh. It's hiding from me! Unless it's all in my mind. I'm sure I did though. Did you know if it was true though, Ginny and Harry would be third cousins?

I thought about this all once before, and I will never try and figure out this mess again! So many people they're distantly related to, and then in the end they're even closer after Harry marries Ginny and then you add Hermione in there, and Remus' family since Tonks is Sirius' cousin, and if Teddy and Victorie get married...that just adds more of Fleur's family into the Weasley family who is connected to the Black family which Teddy is too. A bit disturbing, but then again it's not so far-fetched, my family is pretty darn big too.
Gosh, you made me think about it again!

A part of me hopes you don't because I want James and Harry to be related to Sirius. ninja
Well, by scientists' DNA analysys it's only not considered incest anymore when it's 4th cousins, so I certainly hope Ginny and Harry aren't 3rd. burning_eyes

Quote: Dorea (Black) Potter (1920-1977) Daughter of Cygnus and Violetta (Bulstrode) Black (BFT). Three older siblings: two brothers Pollux (1912-1990) and Marius (disowned, dates unknown), one sister Cassiopeia (1915-1992) (BFT). Married to Charlus Potter; they had one unnamed son (BFT). It is doubtful that Dorea is Harry's grandmother because Jo has told us that "James's parents were elderly, were getting on a little when he was born, which explains the only child, very pampered, had-him-late-in-life-so-he's-an-extra-treasure, as often happens, I think. They were old in wizarding terms, and they died." (TLC) Dorea was only 57 when she died. Possible name derivation: related to the names Dora and Dolores; Dorea is a bacterium found in human feces. Not a star or constellation. I got that from HP Lexicon. Sorry! I think this is what I read. Might not of been an interview.

Thanks for finding it! whee Yeah, you're right, that's only Lexicon's assumption. If Dorea and Charlus had a son Sirius' age then they certainly would be elderly and therfore fit James' parents' criteria. 3nodding (Which I already knew about if you look at one of my earlier posts in this thread.) So, I'll just believe James and Harry are Sirius' cousins because JKR herself didn't say they weren't; a fan only speculates they aren't. YAY! razz

True, but also Sirius Uncle Alphard got burned off for 'giving gold to his runaway nephew', so wouldn't Dorea Potter get blasted off if gave Sirius a place to stay? Yeah, I think JK put the one son thing on the tree to make us think haha.

Wow, that's confusing^^ But they have to be related in some way, because all the pure blood families are related, and both the Blacks and the Potters are pure blood families... I think it is really amazing that J.K. Rowling invented all these family names and connections without getting confused^^ She's great!!!

Yeah, it is, isn't it? biggrin THey are are related but, I don't think that close. Wouldn't James and Sirius know they were close cousins? They seemed like they never met each other before...

They might not have met before if Sirius' parents thought James would be a bad influence on him. After all, Potter/Black views were very different. Although, the Potters are wealthy unlike the Weasleys, so a Black wouldn't necessarily get disowned for marrying one.
Walburga may not have known Sirius stayed with James. After all, she certainly knew about Alpharad funding him, and if Sirius had finances why wouldn't she presume that he was living on his own? Besides, I always figured Sirius only stayed with the Potters for a couple of months maximum. He loved them and would certainly come around for holiday breaks, however, he's a proud person and wouldn't want to accept charity for longer than he had to.
