Aphismet pushed the elevator button. He then stood back and watched the little numbers on top of the sliding door. The elevator had to come down all the way from floor 15, so it would take a moment. Then they'd have to ride up aaaaaall the way to the top, floor 30.

Aphi usually felt like he was wasting time, just standing around, but today he felt rather pleased about it. He grinned and turned to the person standing next to him. "Hey, remember the last time we were here together? That was a big turning point in both our lives, wasn't it?" Aphi reached over and ruffled Isikoro's gray-and-brown hair. "Beaubeau was running amok up there, crashing into things, breaking everything... And who knew that would lead to me getting a job and becoming sous-chef?" Aphi smiled happily. Honestly, he was so content with his life right now he could die with a grin.

"Bet you won't recognize the place. They remodeled it a bit last year. And, you'll have to be in the kitchen most of the night, hope you don't get bored." That was Aphismet's main concern at the moment, that Isi would be tired of watching the kitchen after a few minutes. "If you get bored, maybe you can help by baking something for us? Not that you have to! Just, be sure to tell me if you bored! Okay? I'll take you home when you're tired of this."

Isi gave a laugh as his big brother ruffled his hair. As soon as the man stopped, the boy tried to comb his hair back into place with his fingers. Good thing that his hair was relatively short so that it didn't have to do much. Hopefully it would go back to place.

What Aphi was saying though brought back a flood of memories. The first time they met, they had run into each other on a street corner! "Yeah," Isi agreed, "I remember. That was almost two years ago, now, huh?"

Underneath the whir of the elevator and the jerk of the cables, Isi gave a hoot of surprise, "Remodeled? I wouldn't down that after all the chaos BeauBeau caused. Meh, I won't get bored in the kitchen, don't worry. Yeah, I could try and bake something. It'll be cool to work with all the professional tools and such."

Aphi smiled, hoping Isi was right and he wouldn't be bored. "Just mind that you're not in any of the stations that are really busy, and you'll be okay."

The elevator finally reached its destination and Aphi stepped out, smiling in greeting at the Maitre D. "Charles, this is my little brother Isikoro." The man bowed and smiled at Isi before introducing his own daughter, a little girl sitting on a stool near the desk with the register on it. She smiled and waved, swinging her legs.

"Ah, there's going to be kids running around everywhere, too, so be wary of that." Aphi could already hear a small ruckus coming from the kitchen as he walked through the Dining Hall.

The entire floor was nothing but windows, letting the diners see Durem at night-time. It was like a sea of stars as far as the eye could see, stretching out below the thirtieth floor of the hotel. The tables and chairs were all of sleek black wood, with white and golden dinnerware already set out, napkins folded fancily in the wine glasses. The large fountain in the center was babbling water down into the large pool, and above it was the crystal chandelier, crowning piece of the restaurant, the lights from the many small bulbs sending small diamonds of light dancing across the surface of the fountain water. The lights also reflected in all the windows, adding their own bright spots of light to the night sky.

"Fancy, hunh?" Aphi said with a sigh as he paused to look at the fountain. "I really like looking at that water and the lights in the window. Wanna go see closer, what it looks like outside? I can wait for you here, if you want to see." Aphi beamed, as proud as though he'd built this place himself. He just loved his job that much, apparently, that he considered this his second home.

"Alright!" Isi piped happily, "Now you can teach me all the names of the cooks and the stations and different cookware. That's right, right? They have different names?"

When he was introduced to Charles, Isi gave a polite bow of his head since he couldn't get his hands out from his crutches fast enough to shake hands. He muttered a nice "hello, wonderful to meet you, sir" and have a smile to the girl sitting behind the register.

Children. Isi had a soft spot for children. It was a left-over feeling from his younger years and he couldn't help but give a goofy smile at the sight of all the kids. "I'll be fine with the kids," Isi promised, "I'll be sure to watch where I'm moving."

When Aphi pointed out the fountain, Isi couldn't help but give an embarrassed chuckle, "I remember that fountain. We were sitting in it when we finally caught Beauregard. Sure, I'd like to go see." And so, with the hobble of his crutches, he meandered over to the fountain, gazing in wonder at the colors and changing lights.

Aphismet stood still near the kitchen doors, watching his brother hobble over to the fountain. Indeed, Aph remembered the last time, how they'd ended up sitting in the water, clutching the floating, singing whale. Such memories! Aphi was sure they would have recalled that day with lots more negative feelings, but it had basically been the start of everything.

For a while Aphi just waited, smiling at his brother, but a quick look at his watch showed that it was a few minutes past starting. "Isi, I gotta go in, now! You coming?" The sous-chef waited for Isi to join him again before opening the swinging door and leading the way in.

There was a veritable cacophony of children in here, playing with pots and running around the stations. The cooks were laughing and talking, obviously taking it easy today. Good thing the Restaurant had limited how many people they'd serve that day, and had encouraged all patrons to bring their own children today for a free kids meal. It was a once-a-year event, one which Aphi had regretted missing last year.

The white-haired man took his white apron from the peg and wrapped it around himself, rolling his white sleeves just a tad more before heading inside. "Alright, Isi, things will quiet down a bit in a short while I'd imagine but in the meantime, let me show you around!" Aphi nearly had to scream to be heard over the din of kids.

Aphi walked around the kitchen showing the sauce station, the pastry station, and all the other stations, introducing the chefs as he went. Each then introduced their own child, which was most of the time not at their side, running around the place like wild animals. Finally Aphi came to his own station. "This is where I work! I make grilled items and most quick-cooking entrees. The most delicious-smelling items!"

Nearby chefs piped up in smirking protest, disagreeing in what was obviously a daily battle of whose food smelled the best. Aphi grinned. "Anyway Isi, those two stations back there are free so if you want to make stuff later you'll have to be there. I have to start preparing things for today now, do you want to help?"

Isi hobbled after his big brother, mindful of the children who trundled in front of his path. Following Aphi into the kitchen, Isi was surprised by the cleanliness of it. He had known kitchens to be clean, but the elegant cleanness that resided in this kitchen was amazing. Everything was organized, but the chaos was provided by the chefs and the cooking, making it the perfect balance. Isi gaped at the wonders and he grinned at Aphi as they finally made it to his station, "This is your work, Aphi? This is amazing! How long does it take to clean? Is this why you get back home so late?"

He was proud of his brother. Isi couldn't believe that their mistake of running into the building after his flying whale almost two years ago had amounted to this. "Yes," Isi replied, his chest swelling with the idea of helping Aphi cook, "Of course I want to help! What do you take me for? What is it that you need? Can I help cut? I need to wash my hands. Where's the sink?"

Aphismet laughed at Isi's enthusiastic response. Really, it was wonderful to be able to show the younger Delaran this place. Aphismet felt proud of himself, for once in his life. He grinned almost constantly and nodded at Isi's first question. "Yep, it takes quite a while to clean after every night so that's partly why I'm here late. The restaurant is only open from five to eleven, and I usually have to show up a little before and stay after for near an hour and a half to clean. But I really like it! I'm glad you seem to like it too! Here, the sink is behind us. Ah, mind the kids!"

Aphi turned and washed his hands, then turned back to his station and took his knives off the metal magnet along the side of the counter. "I have to cut up the sirloin for tonight and wrap them with bacon, and I also have to fillet some fish. You can help me with the bacon, alright? I'm not allowed to let you handle a knife, for safety and insurance reasons... we had a big speech about it yesterday."

Aph motioned for Isi to wait and headed for the large metal doors to the fridge, fetching the items he'd needed; one long strip of sirloin and a crate of fish, as well as a slab of bacon. He placed this in front of Isi. "They're already pre-cut, we're going to be needing one per sirloin and I'm going to prepare eight. Good?"

With another grin, Aphi unwrapped the meat and began cutting into it.

Elsewhere in the kitchen, the employees reined in the children and told them to quiet down and play in the area with the unused stations. Suddenly the place was in full work mode, every chef clattering pots and pans and knives, prepping various things for the evening.

Isi kept an ear perked to listen to what Aphismet told him about his cleaning duties around the restaurant and the kind of food that they were going to be preparing. He spun around on his crutches, mindful of the kids who skipped in front of him, before he hobbled over to the sink where he washed his hands. He studied the soap bottle, noting that it was a anti-bacterial with no scents. That would be right, Isi thought, it made sense.

Carefully turning around with his crutches and heading back to Aphi's station just a few steps away, Isi eagerly set himself up on a chair Aphismet had set aside for him. It wouldn't make sense to have the boy standing up for any more than he had to. He looked around for the bacon, eager to start wrapping sirlion.

"Okay, Aphi, I got it. Wrapping bacon around sirloin. Cow in a pig blanket. There's no way that I can get this wrong," Isi assured himself aloud, "How do you remember how to make everything, Aphi? I always need a recipe nearby."

Aphismet laughed at his brother's words. The evening had only just begun and already Aphi knew he would enjoy tonight very much. Having Isi here, seeing what Aphi did firsthand, was wonderful. The boy had a dry wit that always made Aphi smile, and it would be different from the playful needling that usually went on between the cooks. Not that it was unpleasant usually. Just different.

"Well it's rather easy once you've made the same twenty dishes about six times a night for a year. I had the recipes with me when I started, I assure you. But now it's just second nature. And it's just fun to start with a slab of raw meat and end up with a beautifully presented meal, almost a piece of edible art." Aphi smiled proudly, handing Isi the steaks as he cut them. "There, all done. I'll fillet some fish while you finish with those; be right back." Aphi left for a moment, returning from the fridge after a minute with a dozen fish. One at a time he placed them on his cutting board and began cutting.

"You're doing a great job, Isi!"
Aphi couldn't help but check on the younger Delaran's progress, smiling. "The patrons will be really happy!"

"Happy?" echoed Isi in playful thought, "I thought they'd just be really hungry."

The boy was carefully wrapping each sirlion in bacon...Perhaps a bit too carefully. He was taking a lot of time with it, trying to make sure that he got each and every one right. He didn't want to peer out the window and see some patron holding up one that was malformed or something and making jokes about it to the rest of the people at the table. That was not the kind of food that Isi wanted to make, especially when it was technically Aphismet's dish! He wanted to strive for "edible art" perfection.

"Don't you ever get really hungry when you're making all his delicious food?" asked Isi curiously, eying the fish as Aphismet began to mutilate the fish on the cutting board. He could only think of the next wonderful chef-like thing Aphi was going to do with them.
PostPosted: Wed Oct 15, 2008 4:05 pm

Aphismet laughed. "Well, they will be hungry most likely, but they could just go to some burger joint if they were only wanting to fill their tummies. They come here and pay the big bucks to have something delicious and pretty to look at. You eat with your eyes first, they say."

Aphi could have pointed out that Isi was being much too meticulous, but there was no need to say that. The younger Delaran was trying his best to make the sirloins perfectly, and there was no time constraint yet, so Aphi just let it go. He smiled, throwing the last of the fish spines into the trash, setting to skinning the fillets.

"I do get hungry sometimes, especially when making the lobster... That always looks so inviting, all red and plump and smelling so good, mmmm. With the garlic butter on top, I could almost steal that meal right off the plate before it goes out the door, hahah." Aphi grinned. "But when it's time for my break I do get to make myself something for free, so I usually have something delicious. I hardly ever have the lobster cause it's so expensive, but today I think you and me will make an exception and have some, hm? You like lobster, right?"

"Ear with your eyes first," Isikoro echoed, carefully finishing the last of the bacon wrapped sirloin. He carefully placed it on the metal tray where he had been setting the others and he looked at his work with a big grin on his face, "Ah, there we go! All done. That wasn't so bad." he turned to Aphismet, awaiting his next batch of orders as he kicked his legs on the stool.

Peering around, he was able to see the other stations filled with parents and their children, mothers directing their sons' hands, fathers giving cooking instruments to their daughters, and the sight made Isi happy. Once upon a time, he had seen a similar scene, but without the parents. Just children, converging in a kitchen to make their evening meal by themselves. Now there were parents. And Isi had Aphismet.

Catching the last of his big brother's sentence, Isikoro raised his brows, "Lobster? I don't think I've ever had lobster before. Let's have some! What does it taste like? Do you eat the shell? Or was it the inside? It was the inside right?"
PostPosted: Fri Oct 24, 2008 7:48 pm

"Never had-" Aphismet's shock was cut short as he realized that he'd never brought any home, and he doubted Isi would have had access to such food from his time with Old Maasi. "Well, you're in for a treat then! You eat the inside, it's like a treasure hunt. You get to crack open shell parts and scoop out the inside! It tastes like... hmm, like sweet and salty at the same time, but unlike any other meat I can think of. You'll see."

Aphismet finished skinning the fish and placed them all one atop the other in an icebox, closing the lid to keep them fresh for later. "Alright! Now you and I need to truss some chicken which we'll set roasting right away so that it's ready whenever someone orders it." Aphi fetched the food and showed Isi how to wrap the cord around. Together they trussed and prepared six medium birds, which Aphi then placed into the oven.

"We're going to start serving soon, so I'll have to ask you to go over there to the other station; I'll be starting up my grill and it would be dangerous to have others around the open flame. Did you want me to get you any ingredients to play with while you wait for my dinner break?" Aphi asked as he washed his hands.

"Does it taste like the ocean? Like shrimp?" Isi asked absently as he watched Aphi complete the next order. The efficiency of Aphi's hands made Isi gawk. he had seen the cook get fancy at home with their own means every so often, but never before had Isi really paid attention to it. The same hands that ruffled Isi's hair, the same hands that carried Isi's crutches, the same hands that reached for Isi's falling form once upon a time ago when he fell out the window, those same hands were quick, dexterous, and careful. It was almost as if his hands knew what they were doing regardless of Aphi's involvement. They were artisan's hands, Isi thought proudly, hands of a master crafter. they were the hands of his big brother.

Nodding his head as he slid off the stool and affixed his arms to his crutches once more, Isi asked hopefully, "I don't suppose I can try my hand at making bread?" Pastries was his talent, bread was a challenge.
