In my opinion, the best thrash metal band.

First album was the best. Great thrash. Everything else got progressively worse. The last album I enjoy is ...And Justice. However, I love the new one. Its a throwback to the eighties.

I thought Kill em all was alright, and they came into their own with Ride the Lighting, but after justice, they sucked until Death Magnetic...which is really good.

I feel they started out at their best, and went downhill from there. Haven't heard the new album though.

Metallica formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, California. Part of, if not the first on the Bay Area thrash scene, they came out with the album Kill 'Em All in 1983.
One of the Big Four of American thrash, one of their members (Dave Mustaine) left and created another of the four, Megadeth.
Anyways, Metallica came out with Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning, and Master Of Puppets, ...And Justice For All, and the self titled 'Metallica' (known as the Black album to many), then took a dive sold out for Load and Reload, started coming back in St. Anger (which to this day still sucked) and finally came out with something good again with Death Magnetic.
The other albums they put out were Garage Days Revisited, Garage Inc., S&M (which wasn't bad, it just wasn't their kinda thing), and yeah. I got more, but I'll write it later...

Those last albums you mentioned were not real metallica studio albums. The albums in chronological order are Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice for All, "the black album", Load, RE-load, St. Anger and Death Magnetic.

The only two original Metallica members still in metallica to day are Lars Ulrich, and James Hetfield. The other two were the original lead guitarist, as you mentioned, Dave Mustaine, and the original bassist, Ron McGovney.

Oh and Dave did not leave persay. He was a huge drunk, and it was at a tipping point when he kicked Hetfield's dog, is when it was decided he had to go. They called up Kirk Hammett and he was already coming up to NY when they kicked Dave out of the band. Or- they pretty much dumped him on the street because he was, of course, drunk.

That's wrong. If anything, the story was that he was drunk, punched James, and spilled beer on McGovney's bass. But that directly wasn't even it. Everyone around them said it was a huge surprise, and nobody even expected it.

the whole problem with mustaine, in mustaine's own words, was that he was a mean drunk and the other guys were mellow drunks, and they were getting way too drunk way too often and it didnt turn out well.

anyway, the only good metallica albums are the first three. talk2hand

That's just the single. Not a good indicator of how the rest of the album sounds in this case.

Same here, although I like all of their stuff, even St. Anger

I have an interview from guitarworld magazine talking to Hetfield and Hammett on this topic making my point valid.
