Do any of you know what scales are used in folk/viking metal?

Harmonic Minor ex.
--------------------------------------- --------------------------------------- ---------------1-2-------------------- --------0-2-3-------------------6-7-- -0-2-3-------------------5-7-8------ -------------------5-7-8-------------
Phrygian ex. ------------------------------------------------------------------12-13-15- -----------------------------------------------------12-13-15-------------- -----------------------------------------12-14-16-------------------------- ----------------------------12-14-15--------------------------------------- ---------------12-14-15---------------------------------------------------- -12-13-15------------------------------------------------------------------
That's all that I could think of...I would assume just harmonic scales and minor scales...

Thanks man heart I have started writing a song, it is kind of Heidevolk-style in my opinion, but I want to add some epic sounding Ensiferum-type riffs too

I suppose I could learn, I can pretty much just pick something up and focus on it and learn it real easy. I just don't have the need to learn them at the moment.

I don't have the need to, but I love to write music so I have. They are really important for solo's, and just practicing them helps your technique a lot. You should buy a book of scales

By the way, I use the phrygian a LOT but altered a bit, I forget what it's called, or maybe I just mistakedly started playing these notes alot but I'll type it out for you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------12-13-16*- --------------------------------------------------------------------12-13-15--------------- -------------------------------------------------13*-14*-16-17--------------------------- ---------------------------------12-14-15-17---------------------------------------------- ----------------12-14-15-17--------------------------------------------------------------- -12-13-15-16------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I added extra notes which get played repeatedly if you go through each note, but it helps sometimes if you're writing and you have to find the closer note -.- The *s are emphasized notes, they make the scale more distinct IMO. And the last set "12-13-16" is really sick, although it's not very folkish, sounds more middle eastern/egyptian, which is sometimes cool.

You should buy a book of scales I don't know how to play guitar or bass....ar anything that requires scales. And I'm sure I could learn from the internet, rather then spending money on books. I have low cash right now.

I picked up my dads old guitar when I was 10 or 11 and just started playing notes, It eventually made sense and I learned how to read tablature which is a lot WORSE than sheet music, but it gets the job done.

Indeed. If I were to play guitar I wouldn't bother with reading music at first. The guitarist in my band never played guitar until about a year ago....and hes good. He jsut picked it up and started making songs....and watching people on youtube and now he's better then a lot of people I've seen who have been playing for four years.
